Preparation of orthodontic arch wire by laser welding of Ti/TiNi dissimilar alloys
<p>TiNi shape memory alloy has good biocompatibility and superelasticity on the basis of certain strength and stiffness. In<br> the process of tooth correction, stainless steel of composite orthodontic arch wire is used as the support of supporting<br> teeth. TiNi alloy of composite orthodontic arch wire is used to correct the dislocation teeth. Compared with the traditional<br> stainless steel arch wire, composite orthodontic arch wire can reduce the pain of patients. In this experiment, laser welding<br> was carried out by filling Cu filler metal. Laser centering welding and laser offsetting welding were used respectively, and<br> the joint strength was compared. It was found that laser offsetting welding can effectively reduce the content of interface<br> intermetallic compounds and improve the joint strength.</p>

Improved library preparation protocols for amplicon sequencing-based noninvasive fetal genotyping for RHD-positive D antigen-negative alleles
<p>We aimed to simplify our fetal <i>RHD</i> genotyping protocol by changing the method to attach Illumina's sequencing adaptors to PCR products from the ligation-based method to a PCR-based method, and to improve its quantitative accuracy by introducing unique molecular indexes, which allow us to count the numbers of DNA fragments used as PCR templates and to minimize the effects of PCR and sequencing errors. Both of the newly established protocols reduced time and cost compared with our conventional protocol. Removal of PCR duplicates using UMIs reduced the frequencies of erroneously mapped sequences reads likely generated by PCR and sequencing errors. The modified protocols will help us facilitate implementing fetal <i>RHD</i> genotyping for East Asian populations into clinical practice.</p>
Assessment of antimicrobial activity of melittin encapsulated in bicontinuous microemulsions prepared using renewable oils
<p>The objective of this study is to demonstrate that melittin, a well-studied antimicrobial peptide (AMP), can be solubilized in an active form in bicontinuous microemulsions (BMEs) that employ biocompatible oils. The systems investigated consisted of Winsor-III and -IV BME phases composed of Water/Aerosol-OT (AOT)/Polysorbate 85/isopropyl myristate and a Winsor-IV BME employing Polysorbate 80 and limonene. We found that melittin resided in an a-helix-rich configuration and was in an apolar environment for the AOT/Polysorbate 85 Winsor-III system, suggesting that melittin interacted with the surfactant monolayer and was in an active conformation. An apolar environment was also detected for melittin in the two Winsor-IV systems, but to a lesser extent than the Winsor-III system. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis indicated that melittin at a concentration of 1.0 g/L<sub>aq</sub> in the aqueous subphase of the Winsor-IV systems led to the greatest impact on the BME structure (e.g., decrease of quasi-periodic repeat distance and correlation length and induction of interfacial fluidity). The antimicrobial activity of the Polysorbate 80 Winsor-IV system was evaluated against several bacteria prominent in chronic wounds and surgical site infections (SSIs). Melittin-free BMEs inhibited the growth of all tested bacteria due to its oil, limonene, while the inclusion of 1.0 g/L<sub>aq</sub> of melittin in the BMEs enhanced the activity against several bacteria. A further increase of melittin concentration in the BMEs had no effect. These results demonstrate the potential utility of BMEs as a delivery platform for AMPs and other hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs to inhibit antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in chronic wounds and SSIs.</p>

Preparation and tribological properties of multi-layer graphene/silicon dioxide composites-based solid lubricant coatings at elevated temperatures

In this investigation, the<span> </span><span>novel</span><span> </span><span>solid</span><span> </span><span>lubricant</span><span> </span><span>coatings</span><span> </span><span>including</span><span> </span><span>multi-layer</span> graphene<span> </span><span>(MLG)/silicon</span><span> </span><span>dioxide</span><span> </span><span>(SiO</span><sub><span>2</span></sub><span>)</span><span> </span><span>composites</span><span> </span><span>and </span><span>sodium metaphosphate phosphate were prepared. The high-</span>temperature<span> </span><span>tribological</span><span> </span><span>properties</span><span> </span><span>of</span><span> </span><span>the</span><span> </span><span>solid</span><span> </span><span>lubricant</span> coatings were investigated by friction and wear tester. The experimental<span> </span><span>results</span><span> </span><span>showed</span><span> </span><span>that</span><span> </span><span>SiO</span><sub><span>2</span></sub><span> </span><span>nanoparticles</span><span> </span><span>were</span> evenly grafted by sol<span>–</span><span>gel method on the surface of MLG, </span><span>forming MLG/SiO</span><sub><span>2</span></sub><span> </span><span>composites. MLG/SiO</span><sub><span>2</span></sub><span> </span><span>composites were</span> presented excellent thermal stability at 800°C. In the range of 400<span>–</span><span>800°C, the average coefficient of frictions (COFs) were</span> decreased from 0.3936<span> </span><span>to 0.3663, and then</span><span> </span><span>increased</span><span> </span><span>from</span> 0.3663<span> </span><span>to</span><span> </span><span>0.4226.</span><span> </span><span>Based</span><span> </span><span>on</span><span> </span><span>the</span><span> </span><span>analysis</span><span> </span><span>of</span><span> </span><span>wear</span><span> </span><span>scar,</span><span> </span><span>the</span> lubrication mechanisms of the solid lubricating coatings were proposed.<span> </span><span>The</span><span> </span><span>low</span><span> </span><span>interlayer</span><span> </span><span>shear</span><span> </span><span>of</span><span> </span><span>MLG</span><span> </span><span>and</span><span> </span><span>the</span><span> </span><span>ball</span> bearing of SiO<sub><span>2</span><span> </span></sub><span>nanoparticles are the main reason for the</span> reduction of COFs. Assessment of dentinal crack formation using Otoscope, Ophthalmoscope and Dental operating Microscope during surgical apicoectomy at the resected root ends prepared with conventional and ultrasonic technique.
<p><strong>The aim of this study is to assess the formation of dentinal cracks during surgical apicoectomy and compare the use of conventional burs and ultrasonic tips for root end preparation. Additionally, the potential of otoscope and ophthalmoscope as alternative approaches for crack identification will be evaluated in comparison to the dental operating microscope. Thirty-two extracted human premolars will undergo standardized root canal treatment and will be divided into two groups. Group I will receive root end preparation using a conventional technique, while Group II will undergo ultrasonic root end preparation. Dentinal crack formation will be observed using otoscope, ophthalmoscope, and DOM at various magnifications. The presence of cracks will be assessed and compared between the groups. Through a review of the literature, previous studies have demonstrated the potential for dentinal crack formation during ultrasonic root end preparation. However, the efficacy of crack detection varied across different imaging methods. This study aims to contribute to the existing knowledge by comparing the effectiveness of different instruments in crack identification. The findings from this study will aid in selecting suitable restorative materials for root end restoration, minimizing microleakage, and increasing the success rate of endodontic surgery. The data will be statistically analyzed to determine any significant differences in crack formation between the two techniques and the various observation methods.</strong></p>
