Experiments on the effects of width variations of step formation and stability in steep streams

This repository contains experimental data used in the manuscript "Width variations control the location and stability of steps in steep streams: insight from flume experiments" submitted to Geophysical Research Letters by Saletti M. and Hassan M. A.

- The matlab script Steps_Slices.m is the the code used to identify steps from the bed elevation file DEM, using the modified version of the algorithm of Zimmermann, Church and Hassan (Geomorphology, 2008).

- The 4 subfolders contains the DEMs post-processed, as .txt files, and the photos, as .jpg files, after each hour of experiment. The name of the folder identifies the experiments and the cumulative hour after which the data have been collected (e.g. N1_06 contains DEM and photo collected after 6 hours of experiment N1).

- Each hour the unit discharge was increased as follows:
Runs q [l/s/m]
00 5.0
01 10.0
02 12.0
03 14.5
04 17.5
05 21.0
06 25.0
07 30.0
08 36.0
09 43.2
10 51.8
11 62.2

Soil-Recycled Aggregate-Geopolymer Road Base/Subbase Mixtures: Steps Towards Sustainability

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18GTLSU10. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"This study deals with the development of Soil-Geopolymer mixtures using flyash, alkali activator and recycled aggregates (RAG) including recycled concrete (RCA) and reclaimed asphalt (RAP) as an alternative to soil-cement for pavement base and subbase layers. Several mix constituents were varied such as flyash type and content, RCA and RAP content and ratio of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide. Experiment design was established and mechanical and durability characteristics of Soil-RAG-Geopolymer mixtures were evaluated and then compared to the conventional soil-cement mixtures. The results of the testing showed that for the selected Soil-RAG-Geopolymer mixtures the strength, stiffness, permanent deformation, and durability characteristics were either comparable or better than the soil-cement mixtures. However, such mixtures required more curing time at room temperature to achieve needed strength. In order to further optimize the practical applications of this technology in the field, other variables such as molarity of alkali activator, curing conditions, early strength development at room and ambient temperatures, gradation of RAG and shrinkage characteristics need be investigated."

Marine stepping-stones: Connectivity of Mytilus edulis populations between offshore energy installations

Recent papers postulate that epifaunal organisms use artificial structures as stepping-stones to spread to areas that are too distant to reach in a single generation. With thousands of artificial structures present in the North Sea, we test the hypothesis that these structures are connected by water currents and act as an interconnected reef. Population genetic structure of the Blue mussel, Mytilus edulis was expected to follow a pattern predicted by particle tracking models (PTM). Correlation between population genetic differentiation, based on microsatellite markers, and particle exchange was tested. Specimens of M. edulis were found at each location, although the PTM indicated that locations >85 km offshore were isolated from coastal sub-populations. Fixation coefficient FST correlated with the number of arrivals in the PTM. However, the number of effective migrants per generation as inferred from coalescent simulations did not show a strong correlation with the arriving particles. Isolation by distance analysis showed no increase in isolation with increasing distance and we did not find clear structure among the populations. The marine stepping-stone effect is obviously important for the distribution of M. edulis in the North Sea and it may influence ecologically comparable species in a similar way. In the absence of artificial shallow hard substrates, M. edulis would be unlikely to survive in offshore North Sea waters. Although we found an indication that FST was lower between connected locations, isolation by distance analysis showed no increase in isolation with increasing distance. Finally, we did not find clear structure among the populations.

Towards FAIR phytolith data: first steps down a long and winding road.

This is a video recording of a presentation given at the International Meeting of Phytolith Research on 7th September 2021. It introduces the FAIR phytoliths project that strives to improve the FAIRness of phytolith data for the phytolith community. It starts by explaining what FAIR is, what constraints there currently are on data sharing and what the benefits of implementing FAIR for phytolith data would be. It then goes on to explain the project - what has been done so far, our plan over the next year and also how the phytolith community can get involved.

A pdf and powerpoint with a script of the talk can be found here: 10.5281/zenodo.5336872
