Inundation Maps - Polyphytos open surface water reservoir - WQeMS raster products
<p>Within this dataset, inundation maps of the Polyphytos open surface water reservoir in Greece for the years 2021 and 2022 are available in GeoTIFF raster format. They were generated by the Land Water Transition Zone Change Detection service of the WQeMS project as intermediate products. Each raster file in the dataset is named according to the date in which the processing was performed. Copernicus Sentinel-2 data was utilized for the generation of the inundation maps.</p>
Isoprene concentrations data used in the paper "Assessment of isoprene and near surface ozone sensitivities to water stress over the Euro-Mediterranean region"
<p>Isoprene concentrations collected by E. Bourtsoukidis and J. Williams during a field-campaign that took place in Cyprus (site field: Ineia; Latitude: 34.96° N, Longitude: 32.39° E) during the summer 2014 (from July 7 to August 3; data collected every 45 minutes) using the technique of gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) (Derstroff et al., 2017). These data have been used to validate isoprene concentrations simulated by the regional climate model RegCM applied in the study "<em>Assessment of isoprene and near surface ozone sensitivities to water stress over the Euro-Mediterranean region</em>" (https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2022-1522).</p>
Data for 'Surface heat fluxes drive a two-phase response in Southern Ocean mode water stratification'
<p>The files contained here are the output/sensitivity files of four adjoint sensitivity experiments in ECCOv4r2 that are combined to create the sensitivity of large-scale stratification to surface heat flux. (-f/Delta z) * (-alpha * (ADJqnet_t1 - ADJqnet_t2) + beta * (ADJqnet_s1 - ADJqnet_s2)) (Equation 7 in paper, where C = net heat flux). To investigate how external forcing affects the stratification in mode water formation regions in the Southern Ocean, we conduct a set of adjoint sensitivity experiments. The objective function is the annual-average stratification over the mode water formation region, which is evaluated from potential temperature and salinity adjoint sensitivity experiments. The analysis of impacts, from the product of sensitivities and forcing variability, identifies the separate effects of the wind stress, heat flux, and freshwater flux, revealing that the dominant control on stratification is from surface heat fluxes, as well as a smaller effect from zonal wind stress. The adjoint sensitivities of stratification to surface heat flux reveal a surprising change in sign over 2 years lead time. Surface cooling leads to the expected initial local decrease in stratification. However, there is a delayed response to surface cooling leading to an increase in stratification. This delayed response in stratification involves atmospheric damping of the surface thermal contribution, so that eventually the oppositely-signed advective haline contribution dominates. This two-phase response of stratification is found to hold over mode water formation regions in the South Indian and Southeast Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean, where there are strong advective flows linked to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.</p>

Global LAke Surface water Temperature (GLAST): Global lakes are warming slower than surface air temperature due to accelerated evaporation
<p>This repository houses a dataset, known as the Global LAke Surface water Temperature (GLAST), which provides both temporal and spatial details at high resolution for 92,245 lakes worldwide during the period of 1981-2099, with 36% of them situated in Arctic regions. The dataset was established based on four decades (1982-2020) of Landsat satellite images and a physical model (FLake). For a comprehensive overview of the dataset's production methodology, please refer to the paper titled 'Global lakes are warming slower than surface air temperature due to accelerated evaporation' (Tong et al., 2023, Nature Water). Detailed information regarding each data file can be found in the 'readme.docx' file.</p>

National Surface Water Survey: Eastern Lake Survey-Phase I (ELSDS4 - Chemical Survey) 1984
The Eastern Lake Survey-Phase I (ELS-I), conducted in the fall of 1984, was the first part of a long-term effort by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency known as the National Surface Water Survey. It was designed to synoptically quantify the acid-base status of surface waters in the United States in areas expected to exhibit low buffering capacity. The effort was in support of the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP). The survey involved a three-month field effort in which 1612 probability sample lakes and 186 special interest lakes in the northeast, southeast, and upper midwest regions of the United States were sampled.
Long-term monitoring of surface water in central Arizona-Phoenix: period 1997 to 2008
The main aim of this project is to initiate and develop a field sampling program designed to answer the following questions: (1) What are the concentrations and amounts of key nutrients, salts and trace metals being imported to and exported from the CAP LTER urban areas in surface waters (rivers and canals)? (2) How do these terms change over time in response to increasing urbanization and variations in climate? (3) What are the spatial patterns of accumulation and export, and how do these relate to specific land use patches?
Surface water chemistry:Scale Dependent Nutrient Interactions among Lacustrine Communities
E280 is a long-term study, initiated in 2013, to determine how nutrient retention vs. export in the uplands affects downslope aquatic communities. Experimental work will focus on stoichiometry and patterns of nutrient limitation at different observational scales. Our proposed work will test the hypothesis that with increasing spatial and temporal scale, interactions among limiting nutrients diminish and single factor limitation is increasingly prevalent.
