Hannibal's march over the Alps in 218 BCE is one of the most riveting tales from ancient history. Described by both Polybius and Livy, the precise route Hannibal took has vexed historians. Here, I rely on both of these authors along with two modern analyses, one by Peter Connolly (*Greece and Rome at War*, 2006), and one by Jona Lendering at [Livius.org](http://https://www.livius.org/articles/person/hannibal-3-barca/hannibal-in-the-alps/). Dataset for TLS understory characterization: an exploratory study on hazel grouse in Italian Alps
<p>This dataset contains data collected in the middle of June 2021 with a mobile terrestrial laser scanner (mobile ZEB TLS) in 10 squared areas, of approximatively 20x20m each, in Adamello Brenta National Park. A predictive flight-altitude model for avoiding future conflicts between an emblematic raptor and wind energy development in the Swiss Alps
<p>Deployment of wind energy is proposed as a mechanism to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, wind energy and large birds, notably soaring raptors, both depend on suitable wind conditions. Conflicts in airspace use may thus arise between wind energy development and wildlife protection due to the risks of collisions of birds with the blades of wind turbines. Using locations of GPS-tagged bearded vultures, a rare scavenging raptor reintroduced into the Alps, we built a spatially-explicit model to predict potential areas of conflict with future wind turbines deployments in the Swiss Alps. We modelled the probability of bearded vultures flying within or below the rotor-swept zone of wind turbines as a function of wind and environmental conditions, including food supply (presence of wild ungulates). Flight activity at potential risk of collision was generally high, concentrating on south-exposed mountainsides, especially in areas where ibex carcasses have a high occurrence probability, with critical areas covering vast expanses throughout the Swiss Alps. Our model provides a spatially-explicit decision tool that will guide authorities and energy companies for planning the deployment of wind farms in a proactive manner to reduce risk to emblematic Alpine wildlife.</p>

ddRAD data for: Multiple introductions and overwintering shape the progressive invasion of Aedes albopictus beyond the Alps
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span>Aedes albopictus</span></em><span> originates from Southeast Asia and is considered one of the most invasive species globally. This mosquito </span><span>is a nuisance and a disease vector of significant public health relevance</span><span>. </span><span>In Europe, <em>Ae. albopictus</em> is firmly established and widespread south of the Alps, a mountain range that forms a formidable biogeographic barrier to many organisms. Recent reports of <em>Ae. albopictus</em> north of the Alps raise questions of 1) the origins of its recent invasion, and 2) if this mosquito has established overwintering populations north of the Alps. To answer these questions, </span><span>we analyzed population genomic data from >4000 genome-wide SNPs obtained through </span><span>double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing</span><span>. </span><span>We collected SNPs data from specimens from 6 sites in Switzerland, north and south of the Alps, and analyzed them together with specimens from other 33 European sites, 5 from the Americas, and 5 from its Asian native range. At a global level, we detected 4 genetic clusters with specimens from </span><span>Indonesia, Brazil and Japan as the most differentiated, whereas specimens from Europe, Hong Kong and USA largely overlapped</span><span>. Across the Alps, </span><span>we detected a weak genetic structure and high levels of genetic admixture, supporting a scenario of rapid and human-aided dispersal along transportation routes. While the genetic pattern suggests frequent re-introductions from Italian sources into Switzerland, t</span><span>he recovery of a pair of full siblings in two consecutive years in Strasbourg, France, suggests the presence of an overwintering population north of the Alps. </span><span>The finding of overwintering populations of <em>Ae. albopictus </em>north of the Alps and the expansion patterns points to an increased risk of further northwards expansion and the need for increased surveillance of mosquito populations in northern Europe.</span></p> <p> </p>

Genomic data, part 1, of "Secondary contact rather than co-existence – Erebia butterflies in the Alps"
<p>Secondary contact zones are ideal systems to study the processes that govern the evolution of reproductive barriers, especially at advanced stages of the speciation process. An increase in reproductive isolation resulting from selection against maladaptive hybrids is thought to contribute to reproductive barrier buildup in secondary contact zones. While such processes have been invoked for many systems, it remains unclear to which extent they influence contact zone dynamics in nature. Here, we study a very narrow contact zone between the butterfly species <em>Erebia</em> <em>cassioides </em>and <em>E.</em> <em>tyndarus</em> in the Swiss Alps. We quantified phenotypic traits related to wing shape and reproduction as well as ecology in order to compare the degree of intra- and interspecific differentiation. Even though only very few first-generation hybrids occur, we find no strong indications for current reinforcing selection, suggesting that if reinforcement occurred in our system, it likely operated in the past. Additionally, we show that both species differ less in their ecological niche at the contact zone than elsewhere, which could explain why co-existence between these butterflies may currently not be possible.</p>
