Examples of CARE-related Activities Carried out by Repositories, in Sequences or Groups

This dataset is designed to accompany the paper submitted to Data Science Journal: O'Brien et al, "Earth Science Data Repositories: Implementing the CARE Principles". This dataset shows examples of activities that data repositories are likely to undertake as they implement the CARE principles. These examples were constructed as part of a discussion about the challenges faced by data repositories when acquiring, curating, and disseminating data and other information about Indigenous Peoples, communities, and lands. For clarity, individual repository activities were very specific. However, in practice, repository activities are not carried out singly, but are more likely to be performed in groups or in sequence. The session tried to scaffold frameworks that offer participants a critical lens to analyse their own data literacies and explore pathways to data literacy and data activism in institutions and networks.</p> <p>The workshop was technically implemented with success, and all the interactions were undertaken without any imprevist, due to the great support given by the OER20 committee. The OER20 community got engaged with our proposal: 94 participants were visible in the chat side and actively contributing.</p>

Data from: Evaluation of a pharmacist-led actionable audit and feedback intervention for improving medication safety in primary care: an interrupted time series analysis

<p><strong>Background</strong>. We evaluated the impact of a pharmacist-led Safety Medication dASHboard (SMASH) intervention on medication safety in primary care.<br> <strong>Methods and findings</strong>. SMASH comprised: (1) training of clinical pharmacists to deliver the intervention; (2) a web-based dashboard providing actionable, patient-level feedback; and (3) pharmacists reviewing individual at-risk patients, and initiating remedial actions or advising general practitioners on doing so. It was implemented in forty-three general practices covering a population of 235,595 people in Salford (Greater Manchester), UK. All practices started receiving the intervention between 18 April 2016 and 26 September 2017. We used an interrupted time series analysis of rates of potentially hazardous prescribing and inadequate blood-test monitoring, comparing observed rates post-intervention to extrapolations from a 24-month pre-intervention trend. The number of people registered to participating practices and having one or more risk factors for being exposed to hazardous prescribing or inadequate blood-test monitoring at the start of the intervention was 47,413 (males: 23,073 [48.7%]; mean age: 60 [standard deviation: 21]). At baseline, 95% of practices had rates of potentially hazardous prescribing (composite of 10 indicators) between 0.88% and 6.19%. The prevalence of potentially hazardous prescribing reduced by 27.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 20.3% to 36.8%) at 24 weeks and by 40.7% (95% CI, 29.1% to 54.2%) at twelve months after introduction of SMASH. The rate of inadequate blood-test monitoring (composite of 2 indicators) reduced by 22.0% (95% CI, 0.2% to 50.7%) at 24 weeks and by 23.5% (95% CI, -4.5% to 61.6%) at 12 months. After 12 months, 95% of practices had rates of potentially hazardous prescribing between 0.74% and 3.02%. We did not randomise practices but enrolled them in a naturalistic fashion. All our measurements were based on routinely kept electronic health records.<br> <strong>Conclusions</strong>. The SMASH intervention was associated with reduced rates of potentially hazardous prescribing and inadequate blood-test monitoring in general practices. This reduction was sustained over 12 months after start of the intervention for prescribing but not for monitoring of medication. There was a marked reduction in the variation in rates of high-risk prescribing between practices.</p>

Climate and mating systems as drivers of global diversity of parental care in frogs

<p><b>Aim</b></p> <p>Amphibians exhibit unusually diverse reproductive modes, including a wide array of parental care strategies. The evolutionary drivers of this diversity, however, remain unclear. Here we investigate three major factors which may predict interspecific variation in parental care strategies: climate, intrasexual selection and social environment. We hypothesise that some care forms evolved to cope with harsh conditions such as dry or unpredictable habitats. We contrast this prediction with the hypothesis that parental roles have coevolved with the social environment and mating systems. </p> <p><b>Location</b></p> <p>Global.</p> <p><b>Major taxa studied</b></p> <p>Frogs and toads (Anura, Amphibia).</p> <p><b>Time period</b></p> <p>Extant taxa that represent approximately 220 million years of evolutionary history</p> <p><b>Methods</b></p> <p>Using geographic and behavioural data for 971 species of frogs and toads that represent 45 anuran families, we quantify the global distribution of four forms of parenting separately for males and females: nest building, nest and/or tadpole attendance, carrying and nourishment. We use phylogenetic comparative analyses to investigate whether climate, social environment and mating systems predict interspecific variation in parental care.</p> <p><b>Results</b></p> <p>Our results show that climatic effects contribute to parental care diversity: under cool and humid climates males provide offspring attendance, while endotrophy, whereby the female provides all nutrients for the offspring until metamorphosis, occurs under predictable temperatures. In addition, we found other associations between mating systems and parental care forms: uniparental clutch attendance by males is present in species with territorial defence, while cooperative nest building co-occurs with sperm competition. The type of parental care is not associated with adult sex ratios.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions</b></p> <p>No specific form of care is associated with hostile environments; actually, some care forms occur under beneficial conditions, while others are used independently from the climate. Instead, parenting diversity has closely coevolved with mating systems in frogs.</p>

Data from: Models of community-based primary care for epilepsy in low and middle income countries

Objective: To review systematically community-based primary care interventions for epilepsy in low and middle income countries to rationalize approaches and outcome parameters in relation to epilepsy care in these countries. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Global Index Medicus, CINAHL and Web of Science was undertaken to identify trials and implementation of provision of anti-seizure medications, adherence reinforcement and/or healthcare provider or community education in community-based samples of epilepsy. Data on populations addressed, interventions and outcomes were extracted from eligible articles. Results: Twenty-four reports were identified, mostly care programs addressing active convulsive epilepsy. Phenobarbital has been used most frequently though other conventional antiseizure medications have also been used but none of the newer. Tolerability rates in these studies are high but overall, attrition is considerable. Other approaches have included updating primary health care providers, reinforcing treatment adherence in clinics and raising community awareness. The coverage of existing treatment gap in the community, epilepsy-related mortality and comorbidity burden are fleetingly addressed in these programs. Conclusions: The cost-free provision, mostly of phenobarbital has resulted in short-term seizure freedom in roughly half of the people with epilepsy in LMICs. Future programs should include a range of antiseizure medications. These should cover apart from seizure control and treatment adherence, primary healthcare provider education, raising community awareness and referral protocols for specialist care. The programs should ensure sustainability and impact assessment at a community level.

Data from: Implementation of Option B and a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral regimen for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in South Africa: a model of uptake and adherence to care

<p><b>Introduction</b></p> <p>Initiating and retaining pregnant women on antiretroviral therapy (ART) to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) remains a major challenge facing African HIV programs, particularly during the critical final months prior to delivery. In 2013, South Africa implemented its "Option B" PMTCT regimen (three-drug ART throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding, regardless of maternal CD4 count) and introduced once-daily fixed-dose combinations and lifelong ART. Currently, the uptake of Option B and its possible impact on adherence to PMTCT during the critical final months of pregnancy is unclear.</p> <p><b>Materials and Methods </b></p> <p>We prospectively collected visit data from a cohort of adult, HIV-infected, pregnant women between July 2013-August 2014 to estimate three models of adherence to PMTCT during the final 16 weeks immediately preceding delivery. Adherence was defined according to possession of antiretroviral drugs, which was inferred from clinic visit records under varying assumptions in each model. We describe uptake of the PMTCT regimen, gestational age at initiation, and model possible scenarios of adherence through delivery after the implementation of Option B.</p> <p><b>Results</b></p> <p>Among 138 women enrolled (median (IQR) age 28 years (24-32), median CD4 count 378 cells/mm3), median (IQR) gestational age at initiation was 22 weeks (16-26). Estimates of adherence during the final 16 weeks of pregnancy prior to delivery ranged from 75% (52-89%) under the best case scenario assumptions to 52% (30-75%) under the worst case scenario assumptions. Estimates of the proportion of women who would achieve 80% adherence to PMTCT were &lt;50% across all models.</p> <p><b>Conclusions</b></p> <p>Despite the switch to Option B and once-daily dosing, South African women continue to initiate PMTCT late in pregnancy, and estimations of regimen adherence, as modelled using PMTCT visit attendance data, is poor, with &lt;50% of women reaching 80% adherence during final months of pregnancy across all models. Further guideline changes and interventions are needed to achieve vertical transmission goals.</p> <p><b>Trial Registration</b></p> <p>This study was nested within the original RapIT randomized controlled trial which was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (Registration number) NCT01710397 on September 7, 2012 and the South African National Clinical Trials Register DOH-27-0213-4177. The first participant in the RapIT study was enrolled on May 8th, 2013.</p>

Who knows, who cares? Untangling ecological knowledge and nature connection among Amazonian colonist farmers

<p>Conservationists often assume that connection with and caring about nature's wellbeing is strongly linked to ecological knowledge. Existing evidence on the link between ecological knowledge and psychological nature connection is mixed, geographically limited to countries in the Global North, and does not scrutinize potential differences in determinants of ecological knowledge and nature connection.</p> <p>We investigate the relationship between psychological nature connection and ecological knowledge of local bird species and assess their associations with potential drivers, including access to, contact with, and reliance on nature and socio-demographic characteristics. Our study is carried among a novel participant population of colonist farmers living along a major deforestation frontier in the Brazilian Amazon.</p> <p>Our study context has high conservation relevance and provides an ideal setting to assess the extent to which conservation psychology's insights from the Global North hold true elsewhere. Tropical farm-forest frontiers suffer from intense habitat and biodiversity loss, and farmers with migrant origins are important yet rarely studied conservation stakeholders. Importantly, farmer's experiences of nature are likely to vary considerably due to the wide range of socio-demographic, economic, geographic, and cultural diversity.</p> <p>Interviewees scored highly on two indices of nature connection, but scores were higher among older people and those with greater contact with nature. Bird identification knowledge was generally low to moderate, and higher among men and younger people. Species more frequently recognised were regionally common, larger-bodied, or associated with non-forest habitats. 5. Ecological knowledge of birds and nature connection were not correlated, and they did not have any predictors in common. Our results indicate that colonist farmers are capable of forming strong connections with nature, even if they rarely possess detailed knowledge of local forest biodiversity. Considering the complex and apparently context-dependent relationship between knowing and caring about nature, it is unwise to assume that changing one would automatically affect the other.</p>

Prosocial and antisocial choices in a monogamous cichlid with biparental care

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Human society is cooperative and characterized by spontaneous prosociality. Comparative studies on endotherm vertebrates suggest that social interdependence causes the evolution of proactive prosociality. To test the generality of this hypothesis, we modified a prosocial choice task for application to the convict cichlid, <i>Amatitlania nigrofasciata,</i> a monogamous fish with biparental care and a strong pair bond. We show that subject males learned to favor prosocial choices when their mates were the recipients in neighboring tank. When the neighboring tank was empty, males chose at random. Furthermore, in the absence of their mates, males also behaved prosocially towards a stranger female. However, if the subjects' mate was also visible in a third tank, or if a male was the potential recipient, subjects made antisocial choices. In conclusion, fish may show both spontaneous prosocial and antisocial behaviors, according to their social relationships with conspecifics and the overall social context.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
