Learning to feed in the dark: how light levels influences feeding in the hawkmoth Manduca sexta

Nocturnal insects like moths are essential for pollination, providing resilience to the diurnal pollination networks. Moths use both vision and mechanosensation to locate the nectary opening in the flowers with their proboscis. However, increased light levels due to artificial light at night (ALAN) pose a serious threat to nocturnal insects. Here we examined how light levels influence the efficacy by which the crepuscular hawkmoth Manduca sexta locates the nectary. We used 3D printed artificial flowers fitted with motion sensors in the nectary and machine vision to track the motion of hovering moths under two light levels: 0.1 lux (moonlight) and 50 lux (dawn/dusk). We found that moths in higher light conditions took significantly longer to find the nectary, even with repeated visits to the same flower. In addition to taking longer, moths in higher light conditions hovered further from the flower during feeding. Increased light levels adversely affect learning and motor control in these animals.

Finotypic plasticity: Predator-induced plasticity in fin size, darkness, and display behaviour in a teleost fish

Fish fins are remarkable devices of propulsion. Fin morphology is intimately linked to locomotor performance, and hence to behaviours that influence fitness, such as foraging and predator avoidance. This foreshadows a connection between fin morphology and variation in predation risk. Yet, whether prey can adjust fin morphology according to changes in perceived risk within their lifetime (a.k.a. predator-induced plasticity) remains elusive.

Here, we quantify the structural size of five focal fins in crucian carp (Carassius carassius) following controlled manipulations to perceived predation risk (presence/absence of pike Esox lucius). We also assess if crucian carp respond to increased predation risk by shifts in dorsal fin colouration, and test for differences in how fish actively use their dorsal fins by quantifying the area of the fin displayed in behavioural trials.

We find that crucian carp show phenotypic plasticity with regard to fin size as predator-exposed fish consistently have larger fins. Individuals exposed to perceived predation risk also increased dorsal fin darkness and actively displayed a larger area of the fin to potential predators.

Our result thus provides compelling evidence for predator-induced fin enlargement, which should result in enhanced escape swimming performance. Moreover, fin-size plasticity may evolve synergistically with fin colouration and display behaviour, and we suggest that the adaptive value of this synergy is to enhance the silhouette of deep-bodied and hard-to-capture prey to deter gape-limited predators prior to an attack. Together, our results provide new perspectives on the role of predation risk for the development and evolution of fins.

Additional raw video and pose estimation data of top view mouse behavior recordings (marble burying test, light-dark box, fear conditioning box) of acute and chronic stress models

This repository contains raw data for 296 different behavioral recordings of mice (marble burying test, light-dark box, fear conditioning box). These include top view raw video .mp4 files (Videos.zip) and the corresponding .csv pose estimation data (data.zip) obtained with DeepLabCut. The data is from multiple different experiments. The METADATA.csv or METADATA.xlsx files contain all grouping variables and help linking the pose estimation files (located in multiple subfolders of /data) to the video files. Likelihoods for the CTA sensitivity to a dark matter line signal from the Galactic centre (S. Abe et al., 2024])

We present likelihoods to estimate upper limits and detection prospects for monochromatic gamma-ray signals from DM pair-annihilation in the Galactic centre, based on the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) consortium publication "Dark Matter Line Searches with the Cherenkov Telescope Array" by S. Abe et al. [arxiv:2403.04857]. These likelihoods are based on the analysis benchmark assumptions summarized in Table 3 of that publication. In particular, they assume an Einasto profile for the DM density distribution and 500 hrs of Galactic centre observations. We further supply likelihoods for the same analysis benchmark assumptions, but for an Einasto profile with an inner core of size 1 kpc.

As indicated by the filenames, the four files contain likelihoods for setting limits and claiming discovery, respectively. For more technical details, see the headers of these files.

Dark Net Operation Dataset

Dataset from the Dark Net Operation, an inquiry of the Brazilian Federal Police which tracked a child-pornography forum in the Tor network. With two phases, the investigation lasted from 2014 to 2016 and resulted in hundreds of search warrants and in almost 70 arrests, with 6 children rescued from abusive situations. On the on-line forum, the users exchanged child abuse media and sexual abuse experiences. The data from the online forum acquired by the Brazilian Federal Police was structured inside 67 categories, containing a total of 9,367 posts and 6,248,719 views made by 9,280 users. Inside the posts, users express their opinion and share CSEM content. The CSEM were often shared as an external link (URLs) to encrypted files containing photos and videos, but sometimes users upload CSEM directly inside their posts. The direct upload of files inside posts summarises 789 CSEM files. Every post, is associated with an identifier, user, category and the date/time when it was posted. Similarly, every view can be mapped to a user, post and the date/time when the post was viewed.
