Six years of high-resolution monitoring data of 40 borehole heat exchangers

This dataset provides six years of monitoring data of the ground heat exchanger that supplies heat and cold to the E.ON Energy Research Center located in Aachen, Germany. The data belong to the following publication:

Heim, E., Stoffel, P., Müller, D., & Klitzsch, N. (2024). Six years of high-resolution monitoring data of 40 borehole heat exchangers. Scientific Data, 11(1), 1334. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-024-04241-9

The ground heat exchanger consists of 40 double-U-loop borehole heat exchangers (BHE), that are arranged in three subfields. Each subfield is connected to an underground vault, in which sensors for the inlet fluid temperature, the outlet fluid temperature and the volume flow of each BHE are placed. The sensors record data in 30-second intervals. Coherent data is provided from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2024 in two time resolutions and processing levels:

Raw data: The raw data in its initial resolution, aligned to coherent 30-second timestamps.

Prepared data: The raw data was resampled to 5 minute intervals using the weighted mean, with the volume flow as weight. Moreover, data periods that are not representative of the thermal exchange process in the BHE were masked (e.g., no-flow periods).

Both raw and prepared data are provided as .csv files for each month individually. Temperature measurements are given in °C, the volume flow rate in l/min.

In addition, a supporting file indicating the BHE locations is provided. It also contains the length of the horizontal connecting pipes going from the underground vaults (where the sensors are placed) to the BHE heads.

Code explaining how to open and work with the data is provided in a separate github repository: https://github.com/elimh/ERC_BHEfield_Data_Code

High Oxygen Exchange Activity of Pristine La0.6Sr0.4FeO3–δ Films and Its Degradation - Dataset

LSF thin film electrodes on YSZ substrates were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectrocopy inside the pulsed laser deposition chamber and in ex-situ emasurement setups. Inside the deposition chamber (in-situ) these electrodes revealed drastically lower polarization resistances. Exposure to several potential degradation sources inside the chamber showed this to be a rather robust effect. A detaield description is available in: https://doi.org/10.1149/1945-7111/abac2b

This dataset includes the measured impedance spectra. The directory structure represents the order in which the se spectra appear in the publication. Several spectra are discussed in the context of several effects (e.g pO2 dependency and time dependency). In such cases, they are (redundantly) included in both relevant subdirectories.

Combined heat exchanger reactors for conducting simultaneous endothermic and exothermic reactions

Combined heat exchanger reactors for conducting simultaneous endothermic and exothermic reactions

Junjie Chen

Department of Energy and Power Engineering, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Henan Polytechnic University, 2000 Century Avenue, Jiaozuo, Henan, 454000, P.R. China

Contributor: Junjie Chen, ORCID: 0000-0001-5055-4309, E-mail address: komcjj@gmail.com

It has been described a process to generate a hydrogen rich gas by generating a catalytic film which is composed of layers of different catalysts. It is proposed that steam reforming of a hydrocarbon be performed by one layer and the energy for this process be supplied by a hydrocarbon oxidative process being promoted in the subsequent layer. Various hybrids of this theme are proposed. However, as the heat is supplied by an autothermal reaction, oxygen must be supplied along with the fuel stream. As well as the oxygen, associated nitrogen is present. This nitrogen acts to absorb process energy which lowers the thermal efficiency of the process as well as diluting the desired product, hydrogen. The presence of the nitrogen increases the load on downstream partial oxidation units which act to oxidize carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The nitrogen also reduces the streams suitability for use in fuel cells. Therefore, a reactor which can supply sufficient energy to an endothermic reaction without mixing the streams is needed. It has been described a method where parallel and discrete channels can be formed by stacking suitable plates to form a structure. The plates are then bonded together using brazing, welding or diffusion bonding techniques. It is also claimed that cast ceramic plates can be used with a suitable sealing mechanism. Catalyst can be adhered onto the wall and energy supplied or removed via conduction between subsequent channels. However, the design does not allow for catalyst replenishment nor precious metal recovery. Therefore, a reactor which affords an easy and cheap method for catalyst replacement and replenishment is required.

Streamwise distance (meters), Heat flux (watts per square meter)

0 28543.2

0.00025 147840

0.0005 130560

0.00075 136832

0.001 76061.5

0.00125 4012.44

0.0015 6787.19

0.00175 9091.13

0.002 70670.9

0.00225 107776

0.0025 78720

0.00275 75904

0.003 39811.2

0.00325 1654.75

0.0035 2917.25

0.00375 4164.75

0.004 50131

0.00425 77568

0.0045 55552

0.00475 53248

0.005 27844.7

0.00525 1018.19

0.0055 1766.44

0.00575 2553.25

0.006 36808.2

0.00625 58240

0.0065 43264

0.00675 43136

0.007 23029

0.00725 728.5

0.0075 1212.56

0.00775 1734.25

0.008 27885.2

0.00825 45056

0.0085 34944

0.00875 37120

0.009 20554

0.00925 566.687

0.0095 893.187

0.00975 1261.12

0.01 22236.7

0.01025 36992

0.0105 30464

0.01075 33920

0.011 19118

0.01125 463.125

0.0115 683.938

0.01175 966.625

0.012 18747.8

0.01225 31872

0.0125 27136

0.01275 31232

0.013 17946

0.01325 392.437

0.0135 547.312

0.01375 772.062

0.014 16463.2

0.01425 28544

0.0145 25088

0.01475 29568

0.015 17164.1

0.01525 343.563

0.0155 452.563

0.01575 637.126

0.016 14980

0.01625 26240

0.0165 23296

0.01675 27776

0.017 16257.6

0.01725 307.437

0.0175 385.437

0.01775 541.563

0.018 13518

0.01825 24064

0.0185 21888

0.01875 26240

0.019 15353.1

0.01925 280.813

0.0195 340.375

0.01975 476.688

0.02 12456

0.02025 22144

0.0205 20352

0.02075 24832

0.021 14579.9

0.02125 263.812

0.0215 312.5

0.02175 433.625

0.022 11277.1

0.02225 20480

0.0225 19072

0.02275 23296

0.023 13807.9

0.02325 251.563

0.0235 294.875

0.02375 404.437

0.024 10105.3

0.02425 18432

0.0245 17152

0.02475 20864

0.025 12394.4

0.02525 236.813

0.0255 276.937

0.02575 375.75

0.026 8677.24

0.02625 15744

0.0265 14592

0.02675 17792

0.027 10592.6

0.02725 213.125

0.0275 249.625

0.02775 335.938

0.028 7370.84

0.02825 13184

0.0285 11648

0.02875 13312

0.029 7754.35

0.02925 167.812

0.0295 212.062

0.02975 190.063

0.03 25.6936

Contributor: Junjie Chen, ORCID: 0000-0001-5055-4309, E-mail address: komcjj@gmail.com, Department of Energy and Power Engineering, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Henan Polytechnic University, 2000 Century Avenue, Jiaozuo, Henan, 454000, P.R.
Dataset supporting publication: “Development and Validation of Analytical Solutions for Earth Basket (Spiral) Heat Exchangers” (publication available for download:GEOFIT Zenodo).

This paper presents an analytical solution and its validation for earth basket (vertical spiral) ground heat
exchangers. The model, based on the well known Finite Line Source Equation, accounts for the heat exchanger pipe diameter and seasonally varying near surface temperature. For computational efficiency the standard approach of using G-functions has been implemented as well. The analytical model is validated based on laboratory experiments and extensive CFD analysis.

Isotopic evidence for increased carbon and nitrogen exchanges between peatland plants and their symbiotic microbes with rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations since 15000 cal. yr BP

Whether nitrogen (N) availability will limit plant growth and removal of atmospheric CO2 this century is controversial. Studies have suggested that N could progressively limit plant growth, as trees and soils accumulate N in slowly cycling biomass pools in response to increases in carbon sequestration. However, a question remains over the longer-term (decadal to century) feedbacks between climate, CO2 and plant N uptake. The symbiosis between plants and microbes can help plants with mycorrhizal N uptake or biological N2 fixation – the pathway through which N can be rapidly brought into ecosystems and thereby partially or completely alleviate N limitation on plant productivity. Here we present results for plant N isotope composition (δ15N) in a peat core that dates to 15000 cal. yr BP to ascertain ecosystem-level N cycling responses to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations in the past. We found that an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration happened with a decrease in δ15N values of both Sphagnum moss and Ericaceae over this time period when constrained for climatic factors. A modern experiment demonstrated that δ15N of Sphagnum mosses decreased with increasing N2 fixation rates. These findings suggested that N2 fixation in Sphagnum moss by symbiosis with cyanobacteria and N uptake in Ericaceae by symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi both likely increased with rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, highlighting a longer-term feedback mechanism whereby N constraints on terrestrial carbon storage can be overcome.

Sunda-Sahul floristic exchange and pathways into the Southwest Pacific: New insights from wet tropical forest trees

Aim Recent investigations on the floristic exchange between Southeast Asia and Australia have shown a clear dispersal directionality bias (West to East) of wet-adapted plant taxa. However, dispersal routes and directions of wet forest taxa into the South Pacific remain insufficiently known. We here aimed to establish the most likely routes and directions of plant dispersal into the Southwest Pacific islands.

Location Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia, Southwest Pacific.

Taxon Dysoxylum s.l. (Meliaceae). This includes Dysoxylum s.s., Didymocheton, Epicharis, Goniocheton, Pseudocarapa and Prasoxylon.

Method We sampled 75% of the species diversity in Dysoxylum s.l., covering the entire distribution range, all genera and major lineages. Phylogenetic relationships of 149 accessions were reconstructed using Bayesian Evolutionary Analysis and two internal constraints. The dispersal–extinction–cladogenesis variant, founder-event speciation (DEC+J), was used for reconstructing the biogeographic history, and 100 BSMs were simulated.

Results Dysoxylum s.l. originated and firstly diversified in the western part of its current distribution range (incl. Indochina) during the Miocene to Pliocene, followed by an overall eastern range expansion towards Malesia, Australia and the Southwest Pacific in the Pliocene.

Main conclusions The south-eastward expansion of lineages into Wallacea and Australia is in temporal agreement with the convergence of the Asian and Australian tectonic plates since the Miocene. Long-distance dispersal is the main mechanism that led to the current distribution. Two dispersal pathways into the Southwest Pacific are identified, (1) through New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to Fiji, and (2) from New Zealand to Fiji. For both routes, Fiji was an important secondary source area for dispersal into the Southwest Pacific.

La and Mn-doped cobalt spinel oxygen evolution catalyst for proton exchange membrane electrolysis

Finding electrocatalysts using earth-abundant materials as a replacement to iridium for oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) represents a critical step in reducing the cost for green hydrogen production. We report here a nanofibrous cobalt spinel catalyst co-doped with lanthanum and manganese prepared from zeolitic imidazolate framework embedded in electrospun polymer fiber. The catalyst demonstrated a low overpotential of 353 millivolts at 10 milliamperes per square centimeter and a low degradation for OER over 360 hours in acidic electrolyte. PEMWE containing this catalyst at anode demonstrated a current density of 2000 milliamperes per square centimeter at 2.47 volts (Nafion® 115 membrane) or 4000 milliamperes per square centimeter at 3.00 volt (Nafion® 212 membrane), and low degradation in accelerated-stress-test. High-resolution electronic microscopy and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, combined with computational modeling, revealed the different functions of lanthanum, manganese, and cobalt in enabling enhanced activity, conductivity and acidic tolerance within the OER operating window.
