Alexandria - People and Water dataset
<p>This dataset is a compilation of labeled data originating from Sentinel 1, Sentinel 2, and the Copernicus Digital Elevation Model (DEM). It offers a rich and comprehensive resource for those interested in geospatial analysis and remote sensing of the region incorporating Alexandria and several other notable locations in Egypt, Gaza, and Israel.</p> <p>The dataset includes three distinct files and a directory, each containing specific data:</p> <ol> <li> <p><code>S1.tif</code>: This file houses Sentinel 1 data specifically curated for Alexandria. The data is presented in two bands; Band 1 displays VV polarization while Band 2 displays VH polarization, both expressed in decibels (dB).</p> </li> <li> <p><code>S2.tif</code>: This file is contains Sentinel 2 data, again focusing on Alexandria. It comprises nine bands, namely B02, B03, B04, B05, B06, B07, B08, B11, and B12. It's noteworthy to mention that band B8A is not included in this collection.</p> </li> <li> <p><code>DEM_Orientation.tif</code>: This file contains the Copernicus DEM data for Alexandria. These labels denote the amount of square meters of built-up area present in each 10x10m pixel, effectively representing built-up area coverage as a percentage. Episode 4 encourages children to think critically and to develop their own understanding of human impacts. The video reviews knowledge on coastal morphodynamics from Episode 2 and coastal currents from Episode 3, as well as rising sea levels mentioned in Episode 1. The animation then explains how infrastructure and people can interfere with these processes. Engagement with indigenous people preserves local knowledge and biodiversity alike
<p>Recent events have brought increasing attention to social inequities in the sciences, including those stemming from the legacy of colonialism. In biological classification, Western scientists have long benefitted from traditional indigenous knowledge but have usually not engaged with it on equal footing, often providing a biased assessment of biodiversity. We illustrate how adopting a collaborative approach results in a better, more complete understanding of biodiversity that promotes conservation of both the environment and indigenous knowledge. This study concerns the Bornean fruit tree species, <em>Artocarpus odoratissimus</em>, which has remained a single species in Western diagnosis but corresponds to two species in the traditional taxonomy of the Iban people. Molecular data from newly collected and historical specimens unequivocally support the Iban two-species framework. We advocate a more expansive approach to standardized scientific taxonomy that welcomes indigenous peoples as equal partners and that integrates diverse forms of taxonomic knowledge, ultimately resulting in improved understanding of evolutionary history and more effective conservation and management of biodiversity.</p>
Data from: An investigation into the effectiveness of using acoustic touch to assist people who are blind
<p>In this work, we explored the potential of a technique known as "acoustic touch" to assist people who are blind in finding objects. This technique is an auditory sensory augmentation paradigm that uses smart glasses to sonify objects entering the device's field of view. We developed a wearable Foveated Audio Device (FAD) to study the efficacy and usability of using acoustic touch to search, memorise, and reach items. The study involved 14 participants, 7 blind/low vision and 7 sighted blindfolded participants. We compared the wearable device to two idealised conditions, a verbal clock face description and a sequential audio presentation through external speakers. We found that the wearable device can effectively aid the recognition and reaching of an object. We also observed that the device does not significantly increase the user's cognitive workload. These promising results suggest that acoustic touch can provide a wearable and effective method of sensory augmentation.</p>

Historical racial redlining and contemporary patterns of income inequality negatively affect birds, their habitat, and people in Los Angeles, California
<p>The Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) was a U.S. government-sponsored program initiated in the 1930s to evaluate mortgage lending risk. The program resulted in hand-drawn 'security risk' maps intended to grade sections of cities where investment should be focused (greenlined areas) or limited (redlined zones). The security maps have since been widely criticized as being inherently racist and have been associated with high levels of segregation and lower levels of green amenities in cities across the country. Our goal was to explore the potential legacy effects of the HOLC grading practice on birds, their habitat, and the people who may experience them throughout a metropolis where the security risk maps were widely applied, Greater Los Angeles, California (L.A.). We used ground-collected, remotely sensed, and census data and descriptive and predictive modeling approaches to address our goal. Patterns of bird habitat and avian communities strongly aligned with the luxury-effect phenomenon, where green amenities were more robust, and bird communities were more diverse and abundant in the wealthiest parts of L.A. Our analysis also revealed potential legacy effects from the HOLC grading practice. Associations between bird habitat features and avian communities in redlined and greenlined zones were generally stronger than in areas of L.A. that did not experience the HOLC grading, in part because redlined zones, which included some of the poorest locations of L.A., had the highest levels of dense urban conditions, e.g., impervious surface cover. In contrast, greenlined zones, which included some of the city's wealthiest areas, had the highest levels of green amenities, e.g., tree canopy cover. The White population of L.A., which constitutes the highest percentage of a racial or ethnic group in greenlined areas, was aligned with a considerably greater abundance of birds affiliated with natural habitat features (e.g., trees and shrubs). Conversely, the Hispanic or Latino population, which is dominant in redlined zones, was positively related to a significantly greater abundance of synanthropic birds, which are species associated with dense urban conditions. Our results suggest that historical redlining and contemporary patterns of income inequality are associated with distinct avifaunal communities and their habitat, which potentially influence the human experience of these components of biodiversity throughout L.A. Redlined zones and low-income residential areas that were not graded by the HOLC can particularly benefit from deliberate urban greening and habitat enhancement projects, which would likely carry over to benefit birds and humans.</p>
Dataset to study "Understanding rural communities' narratives of land abandonment and its consequences on nature's contributions to people in a biocultural landscape in Spain"
<p>This dataset includes the raw data of a survey of 203 local residents in the region of Las Hurdes, Spain. The dataset sheet presents respondents' Linkages toward traditional land uses, Land abandonment perception and impacts, main agricultural practices, and socio-demographic characteristics (age, education level, place of residence, etc). The survey was carried out by face-to-face and the data compilation was done manually.
