Influence of Quaternary environmental changes on mole populations inferred from mitochondrial sequences and evolutionary rate estimation
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Quaternary environmental changes fundamentally influenced genetic diversity of the temperate-zone terrestrial animals, including those on the Japanese Archipelago. The genetic diversity of present-day populations are taxon and region specific, but its determinants are poorly understood. Here, we analyzed cytochrome <i>b</i> gene (<i>Cytb</i>) sequences (1,140 bp) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to elucidate factors determining the genetic variation in three species of large moles: <i>Mogera imaizumii</i> and <i>Mogera wogura</i> occur in Northern and Southern mainland Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu), and <i>Mogera robusta </i>occurs on the nearby Asian continent<i>.</i> Network construction with the <i>Cytb</i> sequences revealed 10 star-shaped clusters with apparent geographic affinity. Mismatch distribution analysis showed that modes of pairwise nucleotide differences (t values) were grouped into five classes in terms of the level, implying the occurrence of five stages for the rapid expansion. It is conceivable that a severe cold periods and a subsequent warm periods during the late Quaternary are responsible for the population expansion events. The first and third oldest events include island-derived haplotypes, indicative of involvement of land bridge formation between remote islands, hence suggesting association of the ends of the penultimate (PGM, ca. 130,000 years ago) and last (LGM, ca. 15,000 years ago) glacial maxima, respectively. Since the third one is followed by the fourth one, it is plausible that the termination of Younger Dryas and subsequent abrupt warming at ca. 11,500 years ago facilitated the fourth expansion event. The second is most likely corresponding to the early marine isotope stage (MIS) 3 (ca. 53,000 years ago) when the glaciation and subsequent warming period are predicted to have influenced biodiversity. Utilization of the critical times of 130,000, 53,000, 15,000, and 11,500, years ago as calibration points yielded evolutionary rates of 0.03, 0.045, 0.10 and 0.10 substitutions/site/million years, respectively, showing the time-dependent manner whose pattern is similar to that seen in small rodents reported in our previous studies. The age of the fifth expansion event was calculated to be 5,800 years ago with the rate of 0.10 substitutions/site/million years ago, during the mid-Holocene, suggestive of influence of humans or other unspecified reason, such as the Jomon marine transgression. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
Orbital-controlled mid-latitude North Pacific dust flux during the late Quaternary
<p>Airborne mineral dust is sensitive to climatic changes, but its response to orbital forcing is still not fully understood. Here, we present a reconstruction of dust input to the Subarctic Pacific Ocean covering the past 190 kyr. The dust composition record is indicative of source moisture conditions, which are dominated by precessional variations. In contrast, the dust flux in marine sediments is dominated by obliquity variations, and display an out-of-phase relationship with a dust record from the mid latitude North Pacific Ocean. Climate model simulations suggest a precessional forcing likely affected the aridity and extent of the dust source regions. Meanwhile, the obliquity variations can be explained by meridional shifts in the North Pacific westerly jet, driven by changes in the meridional atmospheric temperature gradient. Our findings suggest that North Pacific dust input were primarily modulated by orbital-controlled source aridity and westerly during the late Quaternary.</p>

Contrasting sensitivity of weathering proxies to Quaternary climate and sea-level fluctuations on the southern slope of the South China Sea
<p>Tropical marginal seas host important sedimentary archives that may be exploited to reveal past changes in continental erosion, chemical weathering, and ocean dynamics. However, these records can be challenging to interpret due to the complex interactions between climate and particulate transport across ocean margins. For the southern South China Sea over the last 90 kyr, we observe a contrasting temporal relationship between the deposition of clay minerals and magnetic minerals, which were associated with two different hydrodynamic modes. Fine-grained clay minerals can be carried in suspension by ocean currents, leading to a rapid response to regional climate-driven inputs. In contrast, changes in magnetic mineralogy were linked to glacial-interglacial sea-level variability, from which we infer a control by bedload transport and resuspension. Overall, this study indicates that the transfer pathways and mechanisms imparted by varying hydrodynamic conditions exert a substantial influence on the distribution of terrigenous material in continental margin sediments.</p>
Geomorphic dating of across-fault gully incision reveals time-invariant late Quaternary slip-rates at the eastern termination of the Altyn Tagh Fault
<p>Interpretation of fault slip-rates inferred from tectonically offset fluvial landforms is often limited by uncertainties associated with difficulties to explicitly date fluvial incision across the fault. Here, we employed morphology-based modeling to ameliorate this universal dating limitation for gullies that were differentially offset in a sinistral sense across the Altyn Tagh Fault near its eastern termination at ~97°E. Using a stream-power erosion model with locally calibrated coefficients we calculated across-fault gully incision ages that decrease with offset magnitude, are up to threefold younger than the age of the terrace they incised and all-together point towards time-invariant sinistral slip. Luminescence dating of offset alluvial terraces at the same site suggests constant sinistral slip at 0.5±0.1 mm/yr since 52±4 ka. Our results are consistent with northeastward expansion of the Tibetan Plateau into stable parts of central Asia through an episodic, “stepwise” process punctuated by prolonged geologic time intervals of constant deformation rates.</p>
Harmonized chronologies of a global late Quaternary pollen dataset (LegacyAge 1.0) in R
<p>We present a chronology framework named LegacyAge 1.0 containing harmonized chronologies for 2831 pollen records (downloaded from the Neotoma Paleoecology Database and the supplementary Asian datasets) together with their age control points and metadata in machine-readable data formats. Here, we provide the R-code for calculation and comparison chronologies with embedded manual, metadata for code runs, Bacon output graphs of each record, graphs comparison of original chronologies and LegacyAge 1.0, and a short shared-screen video of the R-code to show the usage on two example records separately.</p> <p>Supplement to: Li, C., Postl, A. The hidden legacy of megafaunal extinction: loss of functional diversity and resilience over the late Quaternary at Hall's Cave
<p>This dataset contains trait data and R code used in the analysis for the paper "Hedberg, C.P., Lyons S.K., & Smith F.A. (2021). THe Hidden Legacy of megafaunal extinction: loss of functional diversity and resilience over the Late Quaternary at Hall's Cave. Global Ecology and Biogeography. https://doi.org/10.1111/geb.13428"</p> <p>We collected data for eight functional traits (mass, diet, arboreality, cursoriality, soil disturbance, group size, activity period, migration habit) that collectively describe a species' ecological role and influence on ecosystem processes. With these data, we investigated changes in functional diversity and redundancy of a local mammal community over time at Hall's Cave, a site in Central Texas with a continuous record from 21,000 years ago to the present. Additionally, we included several common introduced and domestic species to the modern community to test whether they restore some lost ecological function. </p> <p>We found that declines in functional diversity were greater than expected given the decrease in species richness, implying lost taxa contributed higher than average distinct ecological function. Functional distances between remaining species increased through time leading to lowered functional redundancy in younger communities. However, recently introduced taxa increased functional diversity to levels similar to the Holocene and partially restored functional space occupied by Late Pleistocene fauna. Our local-scale analysis demonstrates how prolonged biodiversity erosion not only leads to functionally depauperate communities, but critically lowers ecological resilience to future disturbance.</p>
