It's buzziness time: rearing, mating, and overwintering Bombus vosnesenskii Radoszkowski (Hymenoptera: Apidae)
<p><em>Bombus vosnesenskii </em>is one of three bumble bee species commercially available for pollination services in North America; however, little is documented about <em>B. vosnesenskii</em> colony lifecycle or the establishment of <em>ex situ </em>rearing, mating, and overwintering practices. In this study, we documented nest success, colony size, and gyne production; recorded the duration of mating events; assessed overwintering survival of mated gynes; and evaluated second-generation nest success for colonies established from low and high elevation wild-caught <em>B. vosnesenskii </em>gynes<em>.</em> Of the 125 gynes installed, 62.4% produced brood cells (nest initiation) and 43.2% had at least one worker eclose (nest establishment). High elevation <em>B. vosnesenskii </em>queens had significantly higher nest initiation and establishment success than low elevation queens. However, low elevation colonies were significantly larger with queens producing more gynes on average. Mating was recorded for 200 low elevation and 37 high elevation gynes, resulting in a mean duration of 62 and 51 minutes, respectively. Mated gynes were then placed into cold storage for 54 days to simulate overwintering, which resulted in a survival rate of 59.1% for low elevation gynes and 91.9% for high elevation gynes. For second-generation low elevation gynes, 26.4% initiated nesting and 14.3% established nesting. Second-generation high elevation gynes did not initiate nesting despite CO<sub>2</sub> narcosis treatments. These results increase of understanding of <em>B. vosnesenskii</em> nesting, mating, and overwintering biology from two elevations. Further, this study provides information on successful husbandry practices that can be used by researchers and conservationists to address knowledge gaps and enhance captive rearing of bumble bees.</p>
Data from: Development time, survival, and performance of Lepidoptera reared at constant temperatures
<p><span>This dataset is a compilation of lepidopteran development and survival rates measured at constant temperatures in the laboratory and reported in peer-reviewed publications. We compiled these data to reconstruct thermal performance curves. Thermal performance curves (TPCs) depict variation in vital rates in response to temperature and have been an important tool to understand ecological and evolutionary constraints on the thermal sensitivity of ectotherms. TPCs allow for the calculation of indicators of thermal tolerance, such as minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures that allow for a given metabolic function. However, these indicators are computed using only responses from surviving individuals, which can lead to underestimation of deleterious effects of thermal stress, particularly at high temperatures. We advocate for an integrative framework for assessing thermal sensitivity, which combines both vital rates and survival probabilities, and focuses on the temperature interval that allows for population persistence. Using a collated data set of lepidopteran development rate and survival measured on the same individuals, we showed (see associated publication) that development rate is generally limiting at low temperatures, while survival is limiting at high temperatures. We also uncover differences between life stages and across latitudes, with extended survival at lower temperatures in temperate regions. Our combined performance metric demonstrates similar thermal breadth in temperate and tropical individuals, an effect that only emerges from integration of both development and survival trends. We discuss the benefits of using this framework in future predictive and management contexts.</span></p>

Rearing environment affects the genetic architecture and plasticity of DNA methylation in Chinook salmon
<p>Genetic architecture and phenotypic plasticity are important considerations when studying trait variation within and among populations. Since environmental change can induce shifts in the genetic architecture and plasticity of traits, it is important to consider both genetic and environmental sources of phenotypic variation. While there is overwhelming evidence for environmental effects on phenotype, the underlying mechanisms are less clear. Variation in DNA methylation is a potential mechanism mediating environmental effects on phenotype due to its sensitivity to environmental stimuli, transgenerational inheritance, and influences on transcription. To characterize the effect of environment on methylation, we created two 6x6 (North Carolina II) Chinook salmon breeding crosses and reared the offspring in two environments: uniform hatchery tanks and semi-natural stream channels. We sampled the fish twice during development, at the alevin (larval) and fry (juvenile) stages. We measured DNA methylation at 13 genes using a PCR-based bisulfite sequencing protocol. The genetic architecture of DNA methylation differed between rearing environments, with greater additive and non-additive genetic variance in hatchery fish and greater maternal effects in semi-natural channel fish, though gene-specific variation was evident. We observed plasticity in methylation across all assayed genes, as well as gene-specific effects at two genes in alevin and six genes in fry, indicating developmental stage-specific effects of rearing environment on methylation. Characterizing genetic and environmental influences on methylation is critical for future studies on DNA methylation as a potential mechanism for acclimation and adaptation.</p>
Dormancy in laboratory-reared Asian longhorned beetles, Anoplophora glabripennis
<p>An insect's capacity to survive winter is critical for range expansion in temperate regions. The Asian longhorned beetle (<em>Anoplophora glabripennis</em>) is a polyphagous wood-boring insect native to China and the Korean peninsula and poses a high risk of invasion in North America and Europe. It is unclear whether <em>A. glabripennis</em> enters diapause, which means that diapause cannot be included in assessments of the risk of this species invading forests in temperate regions. Using a laboratory colony, we examine larval developmental arrest, metabolic rates, gas exchange patterns, thermal sensitivity, and body composition to characterize larval dormancy. Chilled larvae entered a temperature-independent developmental arrest which usually required more than four weeks of chilling to break, decreased their metabolic rate by as much as 63 %, and maintained energy stores throughout the chilling period – results consistent with an obligate diapause. We also observed a switch to discontinuous gas exchange at low temperatures. Thermal sensitivity of metabolic rate did not differ between chilled and non-chilled larvae. Taken together, we conclude that <em>A. glabripennis</em> enters a larval diapause during chilling and terminates diapause after a requisite chilling period. These results will enhance our ability to predict phenology and potential distribution of current and future invasions of <em>A. glabripennis</em>. Dataset: An improved rearing method and artificial diet for greyback canegrubs (Dermolepida albohirtum, Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).
<p>This dataset was generated and analysed for a study aimed at developing a rearing method and artificial diet for greyback canegrubs (<em>Dermolepida albohirtum</em>, Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). See the published study for more details on the methodology.</p> <p><strong>Egg monitoring</strong></p> <p>Excel spreadsheet. Information about <em>Dermolepida albohirtum</em> eggs and hatching rate. Eggs were laid by adult beetles in the laboratory. Eggs were kept in hatching chambers in small batches and stored in an incubator at 26°C, 75% humidity, and in the dark. We recorded when larvae started digging into the sand and when they were successfully buried at 30 seconds intervals for 10 minutes to determine their relative activity level. We also recorded the percentage of their body outside the substrate if they were not completely buried after 10 minutes.</p> <p><strong>Diet uptake</strong></p> <p>Excel spreadsheet. Diet uptake of <em>Dermolepida albohirtum </em>larvae fed different diets in the laboratory for 18 days. We calculated the amount of food source (diet PL1 or carrot) ingested by larvae by subtracting the initial diet weight with the weight of the remaining diet after three days (i.e., when new diet was added). These values were corrected by adding or subtracting the average proportion of diet or carrot weight change measured in controlled containers (i.e., carrots gained 11.2% of their weight on average and diet PL1 lost 1.9% of their weight in controlled conditions).</p>
MINDFULNESS, REARING STYLES AND EMOTION DYSREGULATION IN A SAMPLE OF ADOLESCENTS WITH BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER.
<p>Our objective is to understand the influence of rearing styles and mindfulness skills in emotion dysregulation and BPD in adolescents. We tested the idea in this study. Firstly, we compared rearing styles, emotion dysregulation, and mindfulness skills between a clinical BPD group and a non-clinical control group. We sought to determine whether these characteristics were present in different levels in adolescents with and without BPD features or other psychopathologies. Later, we analyzed the effect of the different rearing styles and mindfulness skills in emotion dysregulation and borderline characteristics.</p>

<p>These videos are the results of an experimental campaign carried out in the department of Propellant, Explosives and Blast Engineering of the Royal Military Academy in Brussels to study the flight trajectory of a projectile (steel sphere (5 or 7 or 8mm diameter)) attached to either a detonator or a rear detonated C4 spherical explosive charge. The projectile is accelerated by the blast wave generated by the explosive. The projectile initial trajectory is hidden by the flash of the detonation. After its passage through the opaque gas cloud, the first appearance of the projectile is captured and an almost straight trajectory can be tracked until the end of the field of view of the high speed camera. The test campaign reveals the capability of the projectiles to maintain an oriented path until impact on a target placed at 910mm stand of distance from the center of the explosion. </p>
Ecological and geographical marginality in rear edge populations of Palaearctic forest birds (data)
<p>The centre–periphery hypothesis predicts that habitat suitability will decrease at the edge of a species' range, a pattern often questioned by empirical data. Here we explore if habitat suitability decreases southwards and shapes the abundance distribution of rear edge populations of forest birds within the restricted geographical setting of the south-western Palaearctic. We also test if birds endemic to the area fit more poorly to the latitudinal decrease of habitat suitability due to the putative effect of adaptations to regional conditions. Location: North-western Africa (Morocco) Time period: Present day Major taxa studied: Passerines (11 species) Methods: Bird occurrences were used to model species distribution and line transects were used to estimate bird abundance. Occurrence probabilities provided by species distribution models were used to display the spatial patterning of habitat suitability. Habitat suitability was employed to predict abundance after controlling for the effect of the distance to some regional source areas of forest birds (tree covered large areas). The species were classified as North African endemic according to an updated review of their taxonomic status. Results: Habitat suitability decreased southwards, supporting the predicted relationship between ecological and geographical marginality in most species. Abundance was positively correlated to habitat suitability and negatively correlated to distance to source areas. The taxonomic status of birds did not affect the patterns. Main conclusions: The southward decrease of habitat suitability predicted by the centre–periphery hypothesis shapes the distribution of rear edge populations of forest birds within the south-western Palaearctic. As most of these populations are endemic, the results suggest that they track the gradients in isolation within the geographical setting of north-western Africa. These results support the vulnerability of these isolated, peripheral populations of forest birds to large-scale environmental changes in a region under the effect of increasing drought and temperature.</p>
