Data from: Fascicles from energy-storing tendons show an age-specific response to cyclic fatigue loading

Some tendons, such as the human Achilles and equine superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT), act as energy stores, stretching and recoiling to increase efficiency during locomotion. Our previous observations of rotation in response to applied strain in SDFT fascicles suggest a helical structure, which may provide energy-storing tendons with a greater ability to extend and recoil efficiently. Despite this specialization, energy-storing tendons are prone to age-related tendinopathy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of cyclic fatigue loading (FL) on the microstructural strain response of SDFT fascicles from young and old horses. The data demonstrate two independent age-related mechanisms of fatigue failure; in young horses, FL caused low levels of matrix damage and decreased rotation. This suggests that loading causes alterations to the helix substructure, which may reduce their ability to recoil and recover. By contrast, fascicles from old horses, in which the helix is already compromised, showed greater evidence of matrix damage and suffer increased fibre sliding after FL, which may partially explain the age-related increase in tendinopathy. Elucidation of helix structure and the precise alterations occurring owing to both ageing and FL will help to develop appropriate preventative and repair strategies for tendinopathy.

Data from: Timing of head movements is consistent with energy minimization in walking ungulates

Many ungulates show a conspicuous nodding motion of the head when walking. Until now, the functional significance of this behaviour remained unclear. Combining in vivo kinematics of quadrupedal mammals with a computer model, we show that the timing of vertical displacements of the head and neck is consistent with minimizing energy expenditure for carrying these body parts in an inverted pendulum walking gait. Varying the timing of head movements in the model resulted in increased metabolic cost estimate for carrying the head and neck of up to 63%. Oscillations of the head–neck unit result in weight force oscillations transmitted to the forelimbs. Advantageous timing increases the load in single support phases, in which redirecting the trajectory of the centre of mass (COM) is thought to be energetically inexpensive. During double support, in which—according to collision mechanics—directional changes of the impulse of the COM are expensive, the observed timing decreases the load. Because the head and neck comprise approximately 10% of body mass, the effect shown here should also affect the animals' overall energy expenditure. This mechanism, working analogously in high-tech backpacks for energy-saving load carriage, is widespread in ungulates, and provides insight into how animals economize locomotion.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Vibrational Energy Exchange Between Nanodiamond and N-butylpyridinium Tetrafluoroborate Ionic Liquid

<p>Nanofluids are composed of certain nanoscale object immersed in the molecular or ionic liquid. Nanofluids generally exhibit higher thermal conductivities, as compared to conventional fluids. Therefore, they are interesting to applications, in which thermal conductivity is a cornerstone. Hereby, molecular dynamics simulations were used to study an energy exchange in one of the possible nanofluids: N-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate based solution of nanodiamonds. The data are given in the form of energy components versus time and atomistic trajectories versus time at a number of temperatures. The simulations were conducted in the constant energy ensemble to avoid efects of temperature coupling and pressure coupling. The dataset possesses&nbsp;both research and educational values.</p>

Acoustic Monitoring Dataset for Robotic Laser Directed Energy Deposition (LDED) of Maraging Steel C300

<p>This dataset presents a set of acoustic signals captured during a single-bead wall experiment in robotic Laser Directed Energy Deposition (LDED) using Maraging Steel C300. The acoustic data was recorded using a high-fidelity Prepolarized microphone sensor (Xiris WeldMIC), capturing the intricate sound profiles associated with the LDED process at a sampling rate of 44,100 Hz.</p><p><strong>Laser Directed Energy Deposition:</strong></p><p>This dataset was generated with a robotic LDED process that consists of a six-axis industrial robot (KUKA KR90) coupled with a two-axis positioner, a laser head, and a coaxial powder-feeding nozzle.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Folder Structure:</strong></p><ul><li><strong>/sample-1</strong>: The main folder for the experiment sample.<ul><li><strong>/audio_files</strong>: Contains 4624 <strong>.wav</strong> audio files, each representing a 40 ms chunk of the LDED process sound.</li><li><strong>/annotations_1.csv</strong>: A CSV file providing annotations for the audio files, labeling each as "Defect-free", "Defective", or "Laser-off".</li></ul></li><li>audio_features.h5: extracted acoustic features in time-domain, frequency-domain, and time-frequency representations (MFCC features). Feature extraction was conducted using Python Essentia Library.</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>File Naming Convention:</strong></p><ul><li>Audio files within the <strong>audio_files</strong> folder are named following the pattern <strong>sample_ExperimentID_SampleID.wav</strong>. Given that there's only one experiment and one sample, the naming will be consistent, for example, <strong>sample_1_1.wav</strong> for the first file.</li></ul><p><strong>Annotation Details:</strong></p><ul><li>The <strong>annotations_1.csv</strong> file contains detailed labels for each audio file, correlating to the conditions observed during the experiment, aiding in quick identification and analysis.</li></ul><p><strong>Experimental Parameters:</strong> The dataset reflects a controlled experiment setup with the following specifications:</p><ul><li>Geometry: Single bead wall structure</li><li>Dimensions: 90 mm * 42.5 mm</li><li>Number of layers: 50</li><li>Laser beam diameter: 2 mm</li><li>Layer thickness: 0.85 mm</li><li>Stand-off distance: 12 mm</li><li>Laser profile: Gaussian</li><li>Laser wavelength: 1064 nm</li></ul><p><strong>Process Parameters:</strong></p><ul><li>Laser power: 2.3 kW</li><li>Speed: 25 mm/s</li><li>Dwell time: 0 s</li><li>Powder flow rate: 12 g/min</li></ul><p>This dataset aims to facilitate the development and testing of acoustic-based defect detection models for real-time quality monitoring in LDED processes. Nodal LMP and Renewable Curtailment Data in Support of Unlocking the Potential of Renewable Energy Through Curtailment Prediction

<p>This data was collected to support research projects like the ones proposed in our presentation at the Climate Change Workshop at NeurIPS 2023, "Unlocking the Potential of Renewable Energy Through Curtailment Prediction"</p><p>Location Marginal Price (LMP) and renewable curtailment data are provided for two major ISOs in the US: SPP and ERCOT. Data covers the dates 2021-01-01 until 2023-09-30. All timestamps are provided in UTC, pricing information is in US Dollars and curtailment is provided &nbsp;in megawatts. This data was retrieved from the respective ISOs data portals and processed into a concise and collated format. Data provided here is copyright of the publishing ISO, and subject to their terms of use agreements. ERCOT's terms of use can be read <a href="https://www.ercot.com/help/terms">here</a>, and SPP's terms of use are available <a href="https://www.spp.org/terms-conditions/">here</a>. Both ISOs permit redistribution of their materials, but SPP requires express written authorization for commercial use.</p><p>We are not able to publish data for additional ISOs until we receive their permission to do so.
