Conservation in post-industrial cities: how does vacant land management and landscape configuration influence urban bees?
<p>1. Rich pollinator assemblages are documented in some cities despite habitat fragmentation and degradation, suggesting that urban areas have potential as pollinator refuges. To inform urban bee conservation, we assessed local and landscape scale drivers of bee community composition and foraging within vacant lots of Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Cleveland is a shrinking city, a type of urban area that has an over-abundance of vacated greenspaces as a result of population loss and subsequent demolition of abandoned infrastructure. As such, Cleveland represents over 350 post-industrial cities worldwide, that are all promising locations for bee conservation.</p> <p>2. Across a network of 56 residential vacant lots (each ~30m x 12m), we established seven unique habitats, including seeded native prairies, to investigate how vegetation management and landscape context at a 1500m radius influenced urban bee communities. We assessed the distribution of several bee functional traits, diversity, and abundance with pan and malaise traps. Foraging frequency was determined with plant-pollinator interaction networks derived from vacuum collections of bees at flowers.</p> <p>3. We observed higher bee richness and increased abundance of smaller sized bees as the size of surrounding greenspace patches increased within a 1500m radius landscape buffer. Within habitats, greater plant biomass positively influenced bee community richness and abundance whereas taller vegetation was a negative influence. Plant-pollinator interaction networks were dominated by spontaneous non-native vegetation, illustrating that this forage supports urban bees.</p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications: Our study indicates that proximity to larger greenspaces within an urban landscape promotes overall bee richness and increased occurrence of smaller bee species within residential vacant lots. While we did not observe our seeded native plants enhancing the bee community, native wildflowers were still establishing during the study and may have a greater influence when blooming at higher densities. Importantly, spontaneous non-native vegetation provided the majority of urban bee's forage. Thus, vacant land that is minimally managed and vegetated with what many consider undesirable "weeds", provides valuable habitat for bee conservation in cities.</p>

Sustainability challenges and collaboration in the global clothing industry
<p>This dataset contains a social network of collaborative relationships among organizations working to address sustainability challenges in the global clothing industry. The dataset consists of a square matrix containing 1,455 undirected ties among 455 organizations, and a list of organizational attributes. Attribute information includes: 1) the type of organization – keystone actor, clothing company, retailer, manufacturer, trade association, multi-stakeholder platform, NGO, scientific research organization, government institution, and other; and 2) the sustainability challenges addressed by each organization – hazardous chemicals, waste reduction, energy consumption, air emissions, land use, recycling, wastewater, water conservation, and socioeconomic wellbeing. The data were gathered from corporate sustainability reports and related information found on the organizations’ websites.</p>

Measurement data of the industrial IoT scenario
<p>In these measurements considered in this dataset, 15 measurement points are deployed in the scenario. They are sorted in two groups. Among line 1, all measurement points are LoS scenarios. Among line 2, measurement points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,and 7 are LoS scenarios, and measurement points 6, 8, 9 are NLoS scenarios. Due to the limitation of the cable length, measurement data of line 2 locations 1-6 is collected at mmwave band. The heights of the Tx antenna and the Rx antenna are 2.05 m and 1.45 m, respectively. The bandwidth of the intermediate frequency filter of the adopted VNA is 2 kHz. Both the Tx and the Rx antennas are omnidirectional antennas. 200 snapshots are collect at each Rx location. In terms of the 3-4 GHz data, the bandwidth is 1 GHz. The number of frequency points swept in each snapshot is 501. In the aspect of 38-39 GHz and 39-40 GHz data, the center frequencies are 38.5 GHz and 39.5 GHz with 1 GHz bandwidth, respectively. The number of frequency points swept in each snapshot is also 501.</p>

Modeling the impact of a potential shale gas industry in Germany and the United Kingdom on ozone with WRF-Chem
<p>Germany and the United Kingdom have domestic shale gas reserves which they may exploit in the future to complement their national energy strategies. However gas production releases volatile organic compounds (VOC) and nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x</sub>), which through photochemical reaction form ground-level ozone, an air pollutant that can trigger adverse health effects e.g. on the respiratory system. This study explores the range of impacts of a potential shale gas industry in these two countries on local and regional ambient ozone. To this end, comprehensive emission scenarios are used as the basis for input to an online-coupled regional chemistry transport model (WRF-Chem). Here we simulate shale gas scenarios over summer (June, July, August) 2011, exploring the effects of varying VOC emissions, gas speciation, and concentration of NO<sub>x</sub> emissions over space and time, on ozone formation. An evaluation of the model setup is performed, which exhibited the model's ability to predict surface meteorological and chemical variables well compared with observations, and consistent with other studies. When different shale gas scenarios were employed, the results show a peak increase in maximum daily 8-hour average ozone from 3.7 to 28.3 μg m<sup>-3</sup>. In addition, we find that shale gas emissions can force ozone exceedances at a considerable percentage of regulatory measurement stations locally (up to 21% in Germany and 35% in the United Kingdom) and in distant countries through long-range transport, and increase the cumulative health-related metric SOMO35 (maximum percent increase of ~28%) throughout the region. Findings indicate that VOC emissions are important for ozone enhancement, and to a lesser extent NO<sub>x</sub>, meaning that VOC regulation for a future European shale gas industry will be of especial importance to mitigate unfavorable health outcomes. Overall our findings demonstrate that shale gas production in Europe can worsen ozone air quality on both the local and regional scales.</p>
Data from: Public questions spur the discovery of new bacterial species associated with lignin bioconversion of industrial waste
A citizen science project found that the greenhouse camel cricket (Diestrammena asynamora) is common in North American homes. Public response was to wonder "what good are they anyway?" and ecology and evolution guided the search for potential benefit. We predicted that camel crickets and similar household species would likely host bacteria with the ability to degrade recalcitrant carbon compounds. Lignocellulose is particularly relevant as it is difficult to degrade yet is an important feedstock for pulp and paper, chemical, and biofuel industries. We screened gut bacteria of greenhouse camel crickets and another household insect, a hide beetle (Dermestes maculatus) for the ability to grow on and degrade lignocellulose components as well as the lignocellulose-derived industrial waste product black liquor. From three greenhouse camel crickets and three hide beetles, 14 bacterial strains were identified capable of growth on lignocellulosic components, including lignin. Cedecea lapagei was selected for further study due to growth on most lignocellulose components. The C. lapagei secretome was identified using LC/MS/MS analysis. This work demonstrates a novel source of lignocellulose-degrading bacteria and introduces an effective workflow to identify bacterial enzymes for transforming industrial waste into value-added products. More generally, our research suggests the value of ecologically-guided discovery of novel organisms.
