Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian) Archaeospicularia and Entactinaria (radiolarians) from the Table Cove Formation, Piccadilly Quarry, western Newfoundland, Canada
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>New, distinctive, well preserved and previously undescribed constituents of a Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian, Dw2) radiolarian assemblage from the Table Cove Formation in Newfoundland are described. Three-dimensional X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) facilitates detailed examination of key specimens revealing hitherto unknown details of the internal morphologies of key lower Paleozoic taxonomic groups amongst which a lack of knowledge has previously impeded resolution of higher taxonomic rankings. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Twenty-seven archaeospiculid and entactinarian taxa are described and illustrated including six new species: <i>Westernbrookia polygonata</i> n. sp., <i>Neopalaeospiculum</i> <i>piccadilliensis</i> n. sp.,<i> Ramuspiculum laxum </i>n. sp.<em> </em><i>Spongentactinia</i><i>nazarovi</i> n. sp., <i>Aspiculum</i> <i>irregulare </i>n. sp.,<i> Nyfrieslandia</i> <i>ramosissima</i> n. sp., </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The investigation extends the known ranges of the<em> species: </em><i>Pararcheoentactinia reedae</i> Won and Iams 2002, <i>Sphaeroentactinia robusta </i>Won, 2015, <i>Varispiculum ectospiculatum </i>Won 2015, and </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><i>Svalbardospiculum<em> multifurcatum (</em></i><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Won, Iams and Reed) 2005, together with the genus <em>Echidnina</em><i> </i>to the mid-Darriwilian.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Goryeocrinus pentagrammos n. gen. n. sp. (Rhodocrinitidae; Diplobathrida), the first record of camerate crinoid from the Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) of South Korea (East Gondwana)
<p><em>Goryeocrinus</em> <em>pentagrammos</em> n. gen. n. sp. from the Jigunsan Formation of South Korea is described, which is the first diplobathrid record from Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian) of East Gondwana. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that <em>G</em>. <em>pentagrammos</em> is a member of the paraphyletic Rhodocrinitidae of the Diplobathrida and most closely related to <em>Paradiabolocrinus</em> from the Late Ordovician (Sandbian) of Laurentia. <em>G</em>. <em>pentagrammos</em> is characterized by having a pentameral, flat bowl-shaped calyx, conspicuous pentagrammatic ridge formed by bifurcated median ray ridge and pentagonal basal ridge, at least two interradials in the first row of regular interrays, and anitaxial ridge originating from CD interray but close to C ray radial, and lacking intrabrachials and interradials between secundibrachials. The occurrence of <em>G</em>. <em>pentagrammos</em> from South Korea (East Gondwana) drastically expands Ordovician paleogeographic range of the camerates which have otherwise been recorded from Laurentia, West Gondwana, Avalonia, and Baltica.</p>

Data from: Xianella: a new mat-forming calcified cyanobacterium from the Middle–Late Ordovician of North China
Xianella hongii gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Middle–Late Ordovician of Shaanxi, China and interpreted as a calcified cyanobacterial sheath. Xianella filaments formed cable-like strands that constructed thick fenestral layers. The specimens occur in metre-sized limestone blocks, possibly derived from local collapse of a reefal platform margin. In combination with micrite, some of which is intraclastic and peloidal, Xianella created thick and extensive stacks of layered calcified fenestral fabric that appear to be synsedimentarily calcified open-frame mat deposits. The fenestrae range from small, laminose and very irregular, to large equidimensional areas ~2 cm across. Fenestrae with rounded outlines resemble primary gas bubbles observed in present-day microbial mats. These delicate fabrics are comparable in structure and quality of preservation with those of some Proterozoic silicified stromatolitic mats.
