Functional responses of fisheries to hydropower dams in the Amazonian Floodplain of the Madeira River
<p>1. Tropical river fisheries support food security for millions of people but are increasingly threatened by hydropower development. How dams affect these fisheries remains poorly known in most regions. Here, we used a functional traits approach to evaluate the extent to which the composition of fishery yields in the Madeira River Basin the largest sub-basin in the Amazon, respond to dam construction. We also explored how dams affected the monetary value of yields and fishing-based income of the communities.</p> <p>2. We collected fishing data in 17 locations distributed more than 300 km across upstream, reservoir, and downstream zones during pre-and post-dam construction periods. We interviewed 711 fishers from 13 communities to assess fishing income during pre- and post-dam periods.</p> <p>3. Catch-per-unit effort (CPUE) declined significantly, i.e., by 37%, after dam construction. Multivariate analysis yielded six species clusters according to trait syndromes related to life history, migration, swimming-performance/microhabitat-use and economic value that were associated with the environmental data characteristic of pre- and post-dam periods. Comparison of CPUE of each cluster indicated that large species with periodic life-history strategy and regional or long-distance migratory behavior were most affected by dam construction, with CPUE declining by, on average, 31%. Declines in yields and shifts in functional composition of the fishery yields resulted in average decline of 21% in the monetary of functional clusters and 30% in fishing income.</p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications. Our study indicates that the implementation of the dams and associated changes in environmental conditions affected the functional composition of yields and reduced catches, negatively affecting the fishing-based income of the studied communities in the Madeira River.Whereas catches of all functional clusters declined after the dams, species possessing large body sizes, traits related to a periodic life history strategy, either with long-distance or regional migratory behaviors, and the greatest economic importance appeared to be particularly vulnerable. These results imply that hydropower expansion will cause detrimental effects for fisheries and the livelihoods they sustain. Our results underscore the urgent need for considering alternative sources of renewable energy (e.g., solar power and in-stream turbines) to avoid irreversible socio-environmental damages of large dam projects. In river reaches where dams are already in operation or under construction, minimizing impacts will require improving operational protocols to reduce hydrological alterations and developing research and technology to improve the functionality of fish passages. In these locations, addressing losses in fishery value and fishing-based income will also require the implementation of fair compensation measures. Maintaining fish production requires conserving flow pulses and free-flowing rivers and tributaries critical for completing life cycles of fish species with vulnerable traits.</p>
Timing of hydrologic anomalies direct impacts on migration traits in a flood pulse fishery system
<p>1. Understanding adaptive reservoir management strategies that balance ecological outcomes with other objectives necessitates properly articulated environmental objectives. Aside from flood pulse extent-related metrics, residual-based descriptors provide robust descriptions of fish assemblage structure and harvest.</p> <p>2. We proposed a model framework based on spectral analysis of hydrologic variation and the Multivariate AutoRegressive State Space (MARSS) model to statistically quantify the effect sizes of hydrologic variation impacts on total fish catch and functional group (migration types) fish harvest and applied it to 17 years of fish harvest data from the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB).</p> <p>3. Our findings suggest that duration and timing of hydrologic anomalies matter as much as their magnitude. Anomaly droughts coupled with strong pulse can benefit species if timed correctly. Longitudinal migrators were more sensitive to anomalous floods and droughts than other migratory species. Fish catch projections using effect sizes derived from historical data revealed that a well-timed and protracted flood followed by a powerful flood pulse would be advantageous to the fishery, but a flood delay could negate such benefits.</p> <p>4. Our results add to a growing body of research that suggests ecological flows can be engineered. For most dams, the rule curve describing reservoir releases and resulting downstream hydrograph is designed in an ecological vacuum in which the objectives are to maximize human services—power production, flood control or navigation. Our work demonstrates that hydrograph can be designed to manage aspects of functional biodiversity directly. Though the exact shape of our hydrograph may not apply to other engineered river systems, we suggest that the approach can be applied generally, and globally both to developed and developing river basins. Specifically, a functional biodiversity rule curve could be optimized as an additional objective function in a multi-objective optimization framework. Our methodology provides a quantitative method for deriving an ecological flow for this larger tradeoff analysis.</p>

Origins of green turtle fishery bycatch in the Central Pacific revealed by mixed genetic markers
<p>Longline fishing vessels, such as those that target tuna or billfish, also unintentionally catch endangered marine turtle species on the high seas. The stock composition of this bycatch is often unknown but potentially complex, with individuals coming from many possible origins on an ocean-basin scale. To better understand the stock composition of green turtle (<em>Chelonia</em> <em>mydas</em>) bycatch, we obtained 46 turtles, 27–78 cm in curved carapace length, caught by Hawaii- and American Samoa-based pelagic longline fishing vessels across large areas of the North- and South-central Pacific. We genotyped these at nine microsatellite loci and one mitochondrial DNA marker and used a baseline of 1,043 nesting female green turtles from beaches across the Pacific for population assignment and mixed-stock analysis. By analyzing both marker types jointly we were able to increase power and genetically resolve ten baseline stocks of nesting females with mean self-assignment and simulated accuracies of 75–97%. Above the Equator, green turtle bycatch was composed mostly of individuals from Hawaiian and Eastern Pacific stocks, with a small number from the Western Pacific. Below the Equator, the most common stocks in the bycatch were from Australia and the Coral Sea, American Samoa and French Polynesia, and the Galápagos Islands. Overall, turtles originating from East, West, and Central Pacific breeding populations were major components of the bycatch, suggesting that the geographic ranges of these populations overlap across large tracts of ocean during the pelagic life history stages.</p>
Mitigating bycatch in trammel net fisheries using species-specific gear modifications
<p>Small-scale fisheries (SSF) use static gears like hanging nets, which are thought to interact with marine ecosystems more benignly than towed gears. Despite this, trammel nets, one of the most regularly used fishing gears in the Mediterranean SSF, generate large amounts of discards, which can account for 25% or more of the captured biomass. Discarded organisms may include endangered or threatened species such as elasmobranchs, as well as non-commercial invertebrates that damage fishing gear or cause disentanglement delays. We tested various trammel-net gear modifications, including (a) the use of a guarding net attached to the footrope, (b) increasing the size of the rigging twine between the footrope and the netting panel, and (c) decreasing the mesh size of the outer panels. The last two modifications were successful in lowering captures of the marbled electric ray Torpedo marmorata, which is commonly discarded in the study area. Both sorts of modifications are relatively simple and inexpensive to implement. The current study shows that prior evaluation of the discards profile of distinct métiers is essential to accomplish species-specific gear modifications and underlines the importance of collaboration among scientists, fishers and gear manufacturers.</p>
Eutrophication, water quality, and fisheries: a wicked management problem with insights from a century of change in Lake Erie
<p>The datasets here were used to examine relationships between the overall productivity of Lake Erie and the commercial harvest of lake whitefish (<em>Coregonus clupeaformis</em>), walleye (<em>Sander vitreus</em>), and yellow perch (<em>Perca flavescens</em>) during 1915–2011. Here, we provide the two datasets used in the paper by Sinclair et al. titled "Eutrophication, water quality, and fisheries: a wicked management problem with insights from a century of change in Lake Erie". Each dataset is provided as a separate tab in a single Excel worksheet. The first dataset ("Productivity") provides the annual values of the five metrics used to develop the index of overall Lake Erie productivity. The second dataset ("Commercial harvest") provides the total annual commercial harvest (kg) of the three fish species, which were obtained from the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (<a href="http://www.glfc.org/great-lakes-databases.php">http://www.glfc.org/great-lakes-databases.php</a>). A summary and explanation of each variable is provided in the "Info" tab. Further information on how values were calculated (and transformed if necessary) is provided in either the info tab or the methods and supporting information of the associated article.</p>
