Data for "Impact of the Out-of-Plane Flow Shear on Magnetic Reconnection at the Flanks of Earth's Magnetopause"

Data for Figures 3-8 in the paper (data for Figures 5 has been updated on 2024-09-20). The data is compatible with all data-analysis software. Here are the guidelines for reading and visualizing the data:

(1) The filenames "noshear", "MA0p7", and "MA2p3" correspond to the simulation runs with no flow shear, Mach number M_A=0.7 flow shear, and M_A=2.3 flow shear.

(2) The "upper" and "lower" mean upper and lower current sheet, corresponding to dusk-side and dawn-side reconnection respectively. For the "noshear" case, only the "upper" is considered.

(3) Each data file (*.dat) is written in ASCII format and has multiple columns. The first row is the header.

The first column is always the x-coordinates of the figure.

For the line plots, all columns starting from the second column are the y-coordinates for different variables. The variables names can be found at the header.

For the 2D image plots, the second column is the y-coordinates, and the third column is the value of the variable at a given (x,y) location.

(4) The files "fig4_*_field_*.dat" are the magnetic potential in the x-y domain. The contour of this potential gives the in-plane field line configurations.

Impact of nonlinear hydrodynamic modelling on geometric optimisation of a spherical heaving point absorber

Due to the amount of iterative computation involved, researchers involved in geometric optimisation of wave energy devices typically employ linear hydrodynamic models. However, the exaggerated motion of wave energy devices, aided by energy maximising control action, challenges the assumptions upon which linear hydrodynamic modelling relies. Furthermore, the optimal device geometry is also sensitive to the nature of the energy-maximisation controller employed, and to the set of wave conditions over which the optimisation is carried out.

In order to focus on the essential issues, this study takes the simplest possible device for optimisation, a heaving sphere (with just one free parameter), but one which exhibits nonlinear hydrodynamic characteristics, due to the non-uniform cross-sectional area. The study examines the sensitivity to the inclusion of nonlinear Froude-Krylov forces. In addition, the sensitivity of the optimal device size to differences in the applied control algorithm is also studied, as are effects due to different representative sea state representations and performance evaluation criteria.

Landscape composition drives the impacts of artificial light at night on insectivorous bats

Abstract of the related publication :

Among the most prevalent sources of biodiversity declines, Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) is an emerging threat
to global biodiversity. Much knowledge has already been gained to reduce impacts. However, the spatial variation
of ALAN effects on biodiversity in interaction with landscape composition remains little studied, though it is
of the utmost importance to identify lightscapes most in need of action. Several studies have shown that, at local
scale, tree cover can intensify positive or negative effects of ALAN on biodiversity, but none have – at landscape
scale – studied a wider range of landscape compositions around lit sites. We hypothesized that the magnitude of
ALAN effects will depend on landscape composition and species’ tolerance to light. Taking the case of insectivorous
bats because of their varying sensitivity to ALAN, we investigated the species-specific activity response to
ALAN. Bat activity was recorded along a gradient of light radiance. We ensured a large variability in landscape
composition around 253 sampling sites. Among the 13 bat taxa studied, radiance decreased the activity of two
groups of the slow-flying gleaner guild (Myotis and Plecotus spp.) and one species of the aerial-hawking guild
(Pipistrellus pipistrellus), and increased the activity of two species of the aerial-hawking guild (Pipistrellus kuhlii
and Pipistrellus pygmaeus). Among these five effects, the magnitude of four of them was driven by landscape composition.
For five other species, ALAN effects were only detectable in particular landscape compositions, making
the main effect of radiance undetectable without account for interactions with landscape. Specifically, effects
were strongest in non-urban habitats, for both guilds. Results highlight the importance to prioritize ALAN reduction
efforts in non-urban habitats, and how important is to account for landscape composition when studying
ALAN effects on bats to avoid missing effects.
