Effects of the relative abundance of predatory mud crabs (Panopeus obesus and Eurytium limosum) on abundances of snails and fiddler crabs in a Georgia salt marsh

Predatory mud crabs (Panopeus obesus and Eurytium limosum) are two of the main resident infaunal predators in southeastern US salt marshes. Little is known, however, about their effects on important prey species. These influences are llikely to be dependent on the identity and relative abundances of the two predator species. We therefore manipulated the relative abundances of Panopeus and Eurytium in experimental cages in the field (at Airport Marsh, Sapelo Island, GA). We maintained the treatments over 4 months (July - October 2011), before assessing impacts on predator limb loss (an indicator of interspecific antagonism) and prey densitities (small and large mud fiddler crabs and marsh periwinkles).

March 2002 bin-averaged CTD profiles for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Inner Marsh transect

One hydrographic survey was performed on March 23, 2002, along the Darien River, North River, and north channel of the Altamaha River (Inner Marsh Transect, GCE-IM). Vertical CTD profiles were collected at various nominal stations along the transect during flood and ebb tidal regimes. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.

Air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, precipitation, photosynthetically-available and total solar radiation, and wind speed and direction were measured using an automated Campbell Scientific Instruments climate station installed at Marsh Landing on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Observations were logged at 15 minute intervals throughout the study period. The sensors were mounted on a 10m aluminum tower, with wind sensors mounted at the top, light sensors at approximately 5m, and other sensors at 2-3m to minimize interference from the surrounding landscape. Geographic coordinates, soil properties, plant species composition and vegetation survey data in the study on tidal marshes of the Ogeechee, Altamaha and Satilla estuaries in Georgia, USA

We examined patterns of habitat function (plant species richness), productivity (plant aboveground biomass and total C), and nutrient stocks (N and P in aboveground plant biomass and soil) in tidal marshes of the Satilla, Altamaha, and Ogeechee Estuaries in Georgia, USA. We worked at two sites within each salinity zone (fresh, brackish, and saline) in each estuary, sampling a transect from the creekbank to the marsh platform. Site-scale and plot-scale species richness decreased from fresh to saline sites. Standing crop biomass and total carbon stocks were greatest at brackish sites, followed by freshwater then saline sites.

Pot experiment on fresh and brackish marsh plants responses to salinity pulses in summer 2013

We collected 35 individuals of three freshwater species (Zizaniopsis miliacea, Pontederia cordata, Polygonum hydropiperoides) and brackish species (Juncus roemerianus, Schoenoplectus americanus, and Spartina cynosuroides) from the tidal marshes of the Altamaha River estuary, Georgia, USA (31.4° N, 81.4° W). Plants were collected on March 9 - March 11, 2013, and were potted individually in 12 L pots in sediments collected from the same location as plants. Individual potted plants were placed inside dish pans with drain holes at mid-pot height. For salinity treatments, plants were watered once a day with saline water (5 psu: practical salinity units, created using Instant Ocean Sea Salt, Aquarium System Inc., Mentor, OH, USA) for 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, or 31 days per month, and then returned to freshwater. For the control treatment, plants were watered with freshwater daily. Treatments were ran from May 26 to August 28, 2013, and stem height of each plant was measured once a month. The experiment was harvested on August 28, 2013. Individual plants were separated into aboveground and belowground biomass, washed to remove soil, and dried at 60 °C to constant mass.

Mollusc population size distribution monitoring: Fall 2017 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc size distributions based on collections from GCE marsh monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2017 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc species size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-1807. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

May to July 2018 ground control points GPS coordinates of tidal marsh and tidal forest plant species to be used as ground control points in habitat mapping.

We collected field data from sites distributed in habitats along the salinity axis of the Altamaha River estuary and the Duplin River to be used as ground control points (GCP) and ground reference data for habitat mapping. GCPs for tidal marsh (salt, brackish, tidal fresh) and tidal fresh forest vegetation species were acquired. A real time kinematic (RTK) GPS survey of GPS coordinates and ground elevations for tidal marsh vegetation was carried out in May of June of 2018. A handheld GPS was used to collect GPS coordinates for tidal forest plant species in July of 2018. A total of 101 GCPs were collected in tidal habitats, with 26 in salt, 28 in brackish and 29 in tidal fresh marsh, and another 18 in tidal fresh forest. These observations will be used to create habitat maps from aerial photographs of the Altamaha River estuary, GA taken following Hurricane Irma to better understand how the storm surge affected tidal vegetation and to examine any shifts in vegetation type.

Methane and carbon dioxide flux in a tidal freshwater marsh recovering from three years of experimental seawater additions and following the Hurricane Irma storm surge

Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux rates were measured in a tidal freshwater marsh using static flux chambers. The experimental field site, SALTEx (Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment) is part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER and is located on the Altamaha River, GA. The marsh was experimentally dosed with brackish water additions for 3 years, from 2014 – 2017. There are three treatments groups (Press, Pulse, and Fresh) and two control groups (with and without siding on the plots), each with six replicates. Press treatment plots received brackish water throughout the year, Pulse plots received brackish water in September and October and fresh water the rest of the year, Fresh plots received fresh river water throughout the year. The two control groups, one with siding on the plots and one without, received no water addition manipulations. All dosing ceased in January 2018, at which point we began to study the recovery of the marsh. In this study, the Hurricane Irma Rapid Grant evaluated additional effects of the Hurricane Irma storm surge that occurred in October 2017. Greenhouse gas measurements were taken seasonally beginning in March 2018 and ending in March 2019.

Soil accretion at 10 GCE marsh sampling sites from December 2011 to December 2016

The accretion of soil was measured in tidal marshes at 10 GCE-LTER sampling sites from December 2011 to May 2016 Feldspar marker layers were deposited in 0.25m by 0.25m quadrats in the marsh plain at each site in December 2011, then replicate soil cores were removed at approximately 6 month intervals to measure accretion above the marker layer. Due to bioturbation disturbing the sediments, Feldspar was re-deposited after cores were taken approximately every 6 months. This study is part of the GCE sediment monitoring program, and was conducted to evaluate the effects of freshwater input on soil accretion.
