Quartär – Internationales Jahrbuch zur Erforschung des Eiszeitalters und der Steinzeit 67, 23-43.</em></p> <p>The full-text is available under <a href="https://doi.org/10.7485/qu.2020.67.88914">https://doi.org/10.7485/qu.2020.67.88914</a></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong> - The article presents for the first time the collection from Didon´s excavations at Abri Blanchard hosted in the Naturhistorische Gesellschaft Nürnberg. Bought by the Gesellschaft in 1912 through the agency of Hugo Obermaier, the material consists of lithic artifacts, artifacts from bone, antler and ivory, personal ornament, faunal remains and pieces of the brecciated archaeological layer(s). The analysis shows that most of the lithic and osseous artifacts fit well into the variability of the Aurignacian. The bone points can formally be attributed to an early Aurignacian, characterized by split-based points, and a later Aurignacian, indicated by the presence of massive-based points. Although Gravettian artifacts have already been identified in one of the collections hosted in other museums, these were restricted to isolated pieces among the osseous industry. The present study for the first time identified not only additional Gravettian pieces among the osseous industry, but at the same time also a small series of Noailles-type burins, several Gravette points, and a bidirectional core alongside a Pavlovian smoother (“Geweihstecher”). The article discusses how these new findings compare to existing hypothesis about the origin of a non-Aurignacian component at the site.</p> <p><strong>Zusammenfassung</strong> - In dem vorliegenden Artikel werden erstmals Artefakte und Faunenreste aus den Ausgrabungen Didons im Abri Blanchard beschrieben, die sich im Archiv der Naturhistorischen Gesellschaft Nürnberg befinden. Das Inventar wurde 1912 nach Vermittlung von Hugo Obermaier angekauft und enthält neben Steinartefakten und Artefakten aus Knochen, Geweih und Elfenbein auch Faunenreste, Schmuckanhänger und Brekzien-Bruchstücke aus der Fundschicht. Die meisten Steinartefakte und Artefakte aus Knochen, Geweih und Elfenbein können in das Aurignacien gestellt werden. Die Geschossspitzen erlauben bei Anwendung der klassischen französischen Gliederung die Unterscheidung eines frühen Aurignacien mit Geschossspitzen mit gespaltener Basis einerseits, und eines entwickelten Aurignacien mit Geschossspitzen mit massiver Basis andererseits. Wie in bereits publizierten Analysen an Altbeständen in Museen in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten, so konnte auch in dem Nürnberger Inventar eine Gravettien-Komponente erkannt werden. Im Unterschied zu existierenden Untersuchungen liegen hier jedoch nicht nur isolierte Stücke vor, sondern eine Serie von Noailles-Sticheln und Gravette-Spitzen sowie ein großer bidirektionaler Kern. In dem Artikel werden die neuen Erkenntnisse mit bereits vorliegenden Ergebnissen aus älteren Studien verglichen sowie verschiedene Hypothesen zum Vorliegen einer Komponente, die nicht in das Aurignacien gestellt werden kann, diskutiert.</p>

Historical Photograph and Document Collection
<p>After its establishment in 1929, TREC “began business” in 1930, with the construction of its first lab and office buildings and planting of the first crops. The historic photographs emphasize the first 10 years of TREC, when the most visible transition occurred from pineland to farmland, though also from the following decades (1940s-1970s), when TREC started to resemble the present campus. During this time and beyond, the nearly soiless oolitic limestone with native pine rockland transitioned into ornamental, fruit, and vegetable crops, while the pine rockland habitat was becoming vastly reduced and endangered.</p> <p>The catalog for this collection is contained as `Photo&DocumentScans.xlsx` with the collection as the accompanying `Photo&DocumentScansCollection.zip`.</p>
Using web-sourced photographs to examine temporal patterns in sex-specific diet of a highly sexually dimorphic raptor
<p><span>Traditional methods to study raptor diet are usually limited temporally, e.g., prey remains at nesting sites, and are unsuitable to examine dietary changes throughout the year. Using web-sourced photography, we explore temporal patterns in prey size and key prey species between sexes of the sexually dimorphic Eurasian Sparrowhawk (</span><em>Accipiter nisus</em>) throughout the United Kingdom. We examined 666 photographs of sparrowhawk on prey and identified the prey species involved, together with sparrowhawk sex. Changes in prey size and proportions of key prey species over time (seasonally and monthly) were explored for each sex. Prey weight was substantially higher for females than males. However, on average, prey size for both sexes declined during the summer period (May-June) being the lowest in June which is the main nestling-rearing month for both sparrowhawks and their prey. Compared to summer, Rock Doves (<em>Columba livia</em>) were more important prey for female sparrowhawk in winter. Whereas, for males, Eurasian Blackbirds (<em>Turdus merula</em>) were more important in spring compared to autumn. Web-sourced photography can overcome several limitations of previous methods used to study raptor diet including the ability to quantify diet between the sexes throughout the entire year, however, may also introduce a prey-size bias towards larger prey items.</p>

EyCon project Photographs and Metadata
<p>EyCon project</p> <p>Nearly 130,000 JPEG images and pages are included in the EyCon dataset, covering armed conflicts between the 1890s and 1918. Thousands of digitized images and metadata from numerous partner institutions were complemented by a corpus of previously unpublished and little-accessible documents. As part of the enrichment of the existing metadata, visual and multimodal similarity studies as well as the detection of humans and animals were performed. In order to include descriptive metadata in the XML format of the dataset, the document captions were processed to identify and extract named entities. Identifying and publishing graphic images from the EyCon dataset posed challenges due to the limitations of automated tools in detecting violence, necessitating human expertise and contextual understanding to accurately classify historically sensitive material.
