Leap-frog migration and residents: new migratory habits in Swedish Greylag geese

<p>Knowledge about intraspecific and individual variation in bird migration behavior is important to predict spatiotemporal distribution, patterns of phenology, breeding success and interactions with the surrounding environment (e.g., human livelihoods). Such variation is key to adaptive, evolutionary responses, i.e., how individuals respond spatiotemporally to the environment to maximize fitness. In this study we used GPS location data from one to three full annual cycles from 76 Greylag geese Anser anser to test the hypothesis that geese originating at five latitudinally separated capture sites in Sweden have different migration strategies. We also assessed individual consistency in movement strategy over consecutive annual cycles. We used the scale-independent net squared displacement modelling framework to quantify variables of autumn and spring migration for geese from each capture site: distance, timing, and duration. Our results demonstrate a positive correlation between migration distance and latitudinal origin. Geese from the northernmost site on average migrated farther south and about 15 times as far as the short-moving or resident geese from the two southernmost sites. Movement strategies of individual geese varied considerably both within and among capture sites. Individual consistency in movement strategy from one annual cycle to the consecutive was high in geese from the northern sites moving the farthest, whereas the resident or short-moving geese from the southernmost sites generally showed lower or no individual consistency. These changes have come about during a time span so short (i.e. ca 35 years or 8-10 generations) that it can unlikely be explained by classical Darwinian between-generation adaptation. Consequently, and given that young geese follow their parents during their first migration, we presume an important role of within-family, inter-generation change as a driver behind the large-scale changed migration habits in Swedish Greylag geese.</p>

A stream-to-sea experiment reveals inhibitory effects of freshwater residency on organic-matter decomposition in the sea

<p>One billion tons of carbon are annually transported to the global ocean, and the fate of this carbon hinges not only on marine processing rates, but also on freshwater processing during downstream transport. Using a cotton-strip assay we assessed the decomposition of organic matter in marine and freshwater sites and simulated its downstream transport from freshwater to the sea by translocating cotton strips approximately half-way through the freshwater incubation period. We observed faster decomposition in the sea relative to the stream and interestingly, an inhibitory effect of stream incubation on subsequent decomposition in the sea. Total nitrogen content and ∂<sup>15</sup>N in the cotton strips were both greater in the strips incubated entirely in the sea, suggesting greater microbial activity in the marine habitat. Our results lend needed insights into global carbon cycling, the factors that govern organic-carbon processing, and highlight the importance of connections that exist among some of Earth's major ecosystems.</p>

Data to: Opportunities for the conservation of migratory birds to benefit threatened resident vertebrates in the Neotropics

<p>Neotropical countries receive financing and effort from temperate nations to aid the conservation of migratory species that move between temperate and tropical regions. If allocated strategically, these resources could simultaneously contribute to other conservation initiatives. In this study, we use novel distribution maps to show how those resources could aid planning for the recovery of threatened resident vertebrates.</p> <p>Using eBird-based relative abundance estimates, we first identified areas with high richness of Neotropical migrant landbirds of conservation concern (23 species) during the stationary nonbreeding period. Within these areas, we then identified threatened species richness, projected forest loss, and conducted a prioritization for 1,261 red-listed vertebrates using Terrestrial Area-of-Habitat maps.</p> <p>Richness for migrants <span>was greatest along a corridor from the Yucatan peninsula south to the northern Andes but also included southwest Mexico and Hispaniola. Protected areas account for 22.3% of this region while 20.7% is at risk of forest loss. Within this focal region for migrants, all four vertebrate groups showed hotspots of threatened species richness along the west and east Andean slopes</span>. Taxa-specific hotspots included montane areas of southern Mexico and central Guatemala (amphibians/reptiles) and the entire east slope of the Colombian East Andes (mammals).</p> <p><span>Our prioritization highlighted several areas of importance for conservation due to high threatened species richness and projected forest loss including 1) the Pacific dry forests of southwest Mexico, 2) montane regions of northern Central America, and 3) the west Andean slope of Colombia and Ecuador. At a landscape scale in southern Colombia, we show </span>how conservation efforts for 6 Neotropical migrants could benefit 56 threatened residents that share a similar elevational range.</p> <p><em>Synthesis and applications.</em> Funding and effort for migratory bird conservation also has potential to benefit threatened resident vertebrates in the Neotropics. Our study highlights how novel, high resolution information on species distributions and risk of forest loss can be integrated to identify priority areas for the two groups at regional and landscape scales.The approach and data can be further modified for more specific goals, such as within-country initiatives.</p>

Assessment of compound-specific fatty acid d13C and d2H values to track fish residency and mobility in a small subalpine catchment

<p><span>Methods for identifying origin, movement, and foraging areas of animals are essential for understanding ecosystem connectivity, nutrient flows, and other ecological processes. Telemetric methods can provide detailed spatial coverage but are limited to minimum body size of specimen for tagging. In recent years, stable isotopes have been increasingly used to track animal migration by linking geophysical isotope landscapes called "isoscapes". However, compared to telemetric methods, the spatial resolution of bulk stable isotopes is low.</span></p> <p><span>Here we examined a novel approach by evaluating the use of compound-specific hydrogen and carbon stable isotopes of fatty acids (δ</span><sup><span>2</span></sup><span>H<sub>FA</sub> and </span><span>δ<sup>13</sup></span><span>C<sub>FA</sub>) from liver, muscle, brain, and eye tissues for identifying site-specificity of fish from a sub-alpine river catchment. We analysed 208 fish (European bullhead, rainbow trout, and brown trout) collected in 2016 and 2018 at 15 different sites.</span></p> <p><span>δ<sup>13</sup></span><span>C<sub>FA</sub> values of these fish tissues correlated more amongst each other than those of </span><span><span>δ</span><sup><span>2</span></sup><span>H<sub>FA</sub></span> values. Both </span><span><span>δ</span><sup><span>2</span></sup><span>H<sub>FA</sub></span> and </span><span><span>δ<sup>13</sup></span><span>C<sub>FA</sub></span> values showed tissue-dependent isotopic fractionation, while fish taxa had only small effects. The highest site-specificity was for </span><span>δ<sup>13</sup></span><span>C<sub>DHA</sub> values, while the </span><span>δ<sup>2</sup></span><span>H isotopic difference between LIN and ALA resulted in the highest site-specificity. Using linear discrimination analysis of FA isotope values, over 90 % of fish could be assigned to their location of origin, however, the accuracy dropped to about 56 % when isotope data from 2016 were used to predict the sites for samples collected in 2018, suggesting temporal shifts in site specificity of </span><span><span>δ</span><sup><span>2</span></sup><span>H<sub>FA</sub></span> and </span><span>d</span><span>13</span><span>CFA. However, predictive results were still higher than site specificity compared to bulk tissue isotopes for a single time point. In summary, compound-specific isotope analysis of fatty acids may become a highly effective tool for assessing fine and large-scale movement and foraging areas of animals.</span></p>

Data from: Wolbachia infection alters the relative abundance of resident bacteria in adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, but not larvae

Insect-symbiont interactions are known to play key roles in host functions and fitness. The common insect endosymbiont Wolbachia can reduce the ability of several human pathogens, including arboviruses and the malaria parasite, to replicate in insect hosts. Wolbachia does not naturally infect Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of dengue virus, but transinfected Ae. aegypti have anti-dengue virus properties and are currently being trialled as a dengue biocontrol strategy. Here, we assess the impact of Wolbachia infection of Ae. aegypti on the microbiome of wild mosquito populations (adults and larvae) collected from release sites in Cairns, Australia, by profiling 16S rRNA gene using next generation sequencing. Our data indicate that Wolbachia reduces the relative abundance of a large proportion of bacterial taxa in Ae. aegypti adults, that is in accordance with the known pathogen-blocking effects of Wolbachia on a variety of bacteria and viruses. In adults, several of the most abundant bacterial genera were found to undergo significant shifts in relative abundance. However, the genera showing the greatest changes in relative abundance in Wolbachia-infected adults represented a low proportion of the total microbiome. In addition, there was little effect of Wolbachia infection on the relative abundance of bacterial taxa in larvae, or on species diversity (accounting for species richness and evenness together) detected in adults or larvae. These results offer insight into the effects of Wolbachia on the Ae. aegypti microbiome in a native setting, an important consideration for field releases of Wolbachia into the population.

Freeze-tolerance of poleward-spreading mangrove species weakened by soil properties of resident salt marsh competitor

<p class="MsoCommentText"><b>1. Background</b>: Increasing temperatures associated with climate change are shifting plant species to higher latitudes. Soil communities could aid the plants' shift into novel areas by harbouring fewer soil-borne antagonists or more mutualists that influence the fitness and stress tolerance of the shifting species. Alternatively, they could contain novel antagonists or fewer mutualists. Thus, soil communities could positively or negatively affect plant range expansion, particularly if they influence plants' responses to climate, such as freeze tolerance, that feedback to affect expansion.</p> <p class="CxSpFirst"><b>2. Methods: </b>We used the northward range expansion of the black mangrove<i>,</i> <i>Avicennia germinans</i>, into a system dominated by marsh cordgrass, <i>Spartina alterniflora</i><i>, </i>in northern Florida, USA to study how the novel soil environment (i.e., <i>S. alterniflora</i> soil) affects mangrove fitness, susceptibility to cold stress, and the colonization of mutualist fungi. We quantified abundance of root mutualistic fungi in mixed marsh-mangrove habitat and conducted a laboratory experiment to test effects of steam-sterilized and live soils from <i>A. germinans </i>and <i>S. alterniflora</i> on the growth, condition, fungal colonization, and freeze tolerance of <i>A. germinans</i> seedlings.</p> <p class="CxSpMiddle"><b>3. Results and Conclusions:</b> In the field, we found two times higher dark septate endophyte (DSE) colonization of <i>A. germinans</i> roots and three times higher fungal spore density in <i>A. germinans</i> soil compared to <i>S. alterniflora </i>roots and soil. In the laboratory experiment, seedlings in steamed <i>S. alterniflora</i> soil treatments had 50-65% survival after freezing, compared to 0% survival in treatments with live <i>S. alterniflora</i> soil. <i>A. germinans</i> live soil mixed with <i>S. alterniflora</i> steamed soil yielded <i>A. germinans</i> roots with the highest DSE colonization and seedlings with greater shoot biomass and lower root:shoot ratios. <i>S. alterniflora</i> live soil lowered the freeze tolerance of <i>A. germinans</i>, decreased mangrove survival, and depressed DSE colonization.</p> <p class="CxSpMiddle"><b>4. Synthesis:</b> <i>S. alterniflora </i>soil could impede <i>A. germinans</i> establishment in salt marsh communities. As climate warming gradually allows <i>A. germinans</i> to displace <i>S. alterniflora</i>, the rhizosphere could become increasingly hospitable to <i>A. germinans</i>. Our work suggests the soil community associated with resident species mediates climatic stressors to affect expansion success.  </p> <p class="CxSpFirst"> </p>

Phosphorus allocation to and resorption from leaves regulate the residence time of phosphorus in aboveground forest biomass on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo

<p>1. The residence time of phosphorus (P) in trees is a consequence of plant adaptation to P deficiency, with longer P residence time on soils with low P availability. P residence time has been studied at the leaf or canopy level but seldom at the whole-tree level. Whereas P residence time at the leaf or canopy level is largely determined by leaf longevity and the resorption of P before leaf abscission, P residence time at the whole-tree level will also be influenced by differences in P allocation to different plant parts because leaves and woody organs have distinct longevities.</p> <p>2. We estimated the residence time of P in aboveground tree biomass (AGB) as the ratio of P mass (i.e. leaves plus wood) to the annual flux of P via litterfall (i.e. fine litter plus coarse woody debris) for seven tropical rain forests with different soil P availabilities on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. We analysed the effects of P allocation to and resorption from leaves on P residence time along a soil P gradient.</p> <p>3. P residence time (2.7–9.8 years) was approximately one fifth of biomass residence time (AGB/annual litterfall mass; 19.8–48.8 years). This was due to a disproportionately greater relative allocation of P to leaves (P mass in leaves/P mass in AGB; 0.11–0.46), which had a smaller fraction of biomass (leaf biomass/AGB; 0.02–0.05) but a shorter longevity (1.0–1.8 years).</p> <p>4. The relative allocation of P to leaves was often high on low-P soils, and P residence time was expected to be short. By contrast, the resorption rate of P from leaves was also high on low-P soils, which extended P residence time with P deficiency. Consequently, P residence time was nearly constant across the forests.</p> <p>5. The short residence time of P relative to biomass indicates that P residence time depends largely on relative P allocation among plant organs. Similar P residence times among sites were maintained because greater P allocation to leaves on low-P soils was effectively offset by higher P-resorption efficiency.</p>

One might expect yeasts in soil to be highly dispersed via water or insects, forming ephemeral, genetically heterogeneous populations subject to competition and environmental stochasticity. Here, we report persistence of genotypes of the yeast Saccharomyces paradoxus in space and time. Within 1 km2 in a mixed hardwood forest on scales from centimeters to tens of meters, we detect persistence over 3 years of native genotypes, identified by SNPs genome-wide, of the wild yeast, Saccharomyces paradoxus around Quercus rubra and Q. alba. Yeasts were recovered by enrichment in ethanol-containing medium, which measures only presence or absence, not abundance. Additional transplantation experiments employed strains marked with spontaneous defects in the URA3 gene, which also confer resistance to 5-Fluoroorotic acid (5FOA). Plating soil suspensions from transplant sites on 5FOA medium permitted one-step quantification of yeast colony-forming units, with no interference from other unmarked yeasts or microorganisms. After an initial steep decrease in abundance, the yeast densities fluctuated over time, increasing in association with rainfall and decreasing in association with drought. After 18 months, the transplanted yeasts remain in place on the nine sites. In vitro transplantation experiments into non-sterile soil in petri dishes showed similar patterns of persistence and response to moisture and drought. To determine whether S. cerevisiae, not previously recovered from soils regionally, can persist in our cold-climate sites, we transplanted marked S. cerevisiae alone and in mixture with S. paradoxus in fall, 2017. Five months on, S. cerevisiae persist to the same extent as S. paradoxus.
