Assignment Feedback in School Choice Mechanisms

An inventory of school buildings in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia) developed through a mixed-mode data collection approach

Urban disaster risk management and reduction requires the development and periodic updating of regional building inventories. However, the development of such inventories can be very cost-intensive and time-consuming, making this a challenging task, particularly for low- and middle-income countries.

We used a combination of side-walk and remote survey methods to develop an inventory of 2536 school buildings in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Central Sulawesi region was affected by the 28th September 2018 Palu earthquake. The moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5 earthquake caused intense ground shaking in the epicentral area, triggering liquefaction, tsunami and major landslides, leading to over 4,000 fatalities and 165,000 displaced people. At least 1299 schools were reported to have been damaged or collapsed, affecting about 184,000 students.

The developed inventory includes information on location, number of stories, occupancy characteristics (building use and population), age, type of lateral load resisting systems, building materials, structural vulnerabilities, and structural conditions following the 2018 earthquake.

The developed database can be used in pre-event/long-term risk analysis and management, post-event/near-real-time loss estimation, and regional-level decision-making on school assets and related policies. The database has been made available for public use and can be readily harmonised with similar databases for other regions.

This data repository also contains information on interviews with 30 school principals in the region. The interview details the damage states and functional recovery trajectory of school buildings in the 30 schools.

Dataset- Barking up the right tree: Using tree bark to track airborne particles in school environment and link science to society

Experimental data regarding magnetic properties measured in bio-sensors and air filters.

Bio-sensors include tree bark samples, either collected in situ (courtyard tree bark) and exposed indoors-outdoors (bio-sensors) in the schools. Bio-sensors had their magnetic properties measured.

PM1, EC and OC concentrations and SIRM measured on air filters.

Clustering of psychological profiles of primary school pupils

Traditionally, arbitrary psychological research on different types of student activities uses certain sets of tests that reflect different states of students. These states are defined on the basis of certain criteria, the values of which are usually reflected by numerical scales with different intervals. Table 1 provides a list of these profiles and their factors, evaluation criteria with corresponding scales. Table 2 presents generalized results of testing of primary school pupils of the 2nd grade.
Due to the fact that the whole study is implemented on the basis of certain psychological profiles, which we also interpret as hyperproperties, in our case they are the receptors.
So the psychological profile of school motivation as a hyper-property defines five receptors, namely:
school motivation_high level
school motivation_good school motivation
school motivation_positive attitude to school
school motivation_low school motivation
school motivation_negative attitude to school
The protocol of cluster formation with receptor names is given in the file result of clustering.rtf

school motivation_high level
school motivation_good school motivation
school motivation_positive attitude to school
school motivation_low school motivation
school motivation_negative attitude to school
Протокол утворення кластерів з іменами рецепторів наведено в файлі result of clustering.rtf

ALERT Doctoral School 2022: Data for photoelasticity lesson

Data used for the two-hour photoelasticity lesson on September 29, 2022 at the 2022 ALERT Doctoral School in Aussois, France.

In the Data directory, you will find the PEGS-master, PhotoelasticDisks, and Results subdirectories. You will also find the Jupyter notebook ALERTPhotoelasticity_220929_v1.ipynb.

Photoelasticity data is in the PhotoelasticDisks subdirectory. N_Image and P_Image contain a sequence of images of 511 bidisperse birefringent disks in simple shear as viewed with unpolarized light and polarized light, respectively. The Positions subdirectory contains the position and radii of the disks in disks in each image. The G2images and radii_highlighted subdirectories contain, respectively: (1) images of each particle colored by G^2 as computed from the photoelasticity images via methods described in (Daniels, et al., Review of Scientific Instruments, 88, 051808 (2017)); (2) images of deformation of the particle with the outlines of each particle highlighted. Computations are performed in the accompanying ALERTPhotoelasticity_220929_v1.ipynb Jupyter notebook, which may be opened on any computer supporting jupyter notebooks or through Google Colab.

Within PEGS-master, you can open PeGSDiskSolve.m to solve for inter-particle forces using methods described in Sec. V of (Daniels, et al., Review of Scientific Instruments, 88, 051808 (2017)) and in the thesis of James Puckett (thesis titled "State Variables in Granular Materials: an Investigation of Volume and Stress Fluctuations" and completed at North Carolina State University in 2012). You can also find a script titled "PlotExpVsSynth.m" that compares results from G^2 calculations; results are put into the Results subdirectory.

Paths may need to be changed in all scripts.

Related content from the doctoral school can be found here: https://github.com/alert-geomaterials/2022-doctoral-school.

McKim's Free School
Built in 1833, McKim's School is the most archaelogial correct Greek style building in Baltimore by William F. Small and William Howard. The school was established at the bequest of Quaker merchant John McKim. The school was opened to low income youth of both sexes regardless of religion. During the Civil War, the school was converted into a childcare facility. In 1924, the Friends offered the building as a place of worship to the Presbyerian congregation. Presently, the building serves as a variety of education and recreational purposes supported by the United Presbyterian Church, the Society of Friends and others. This c. 1840 painting of McKim's Free School hangs in the Maryland Historical Society Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Climate Hazards Data Integration and Visualization for the Climate Adaptations Solutions Accelerator through School-Community Hubs

Community engagement in planning is essential for effective and just climate adaptation. However, historically underserved communities are often difficult to reach through traditional means of soliciting public input. The Climate Adaptation Solutions Accelerator (CASA) through School-Community Hubs project identifies public schools as promising sites for building both community engagement and community capacity for climate adaptation. To serve in this role, schools need information about the intersecting threats climate change poses to the communities they serve. The Climate Hazard Dashboard for California Schools is a platform that maps the current and future risks associated with five climate hazards, including wildfire, extreme heat days, wildfire extreme precipitation, flooding, and sea level rise, for the nearly 10,000 public schools serving Kindergarten through Grade 12 students in California. Each hazard is mapped and visualized at the school level, providing an accessible way for administrators, teachers, students, and neighborhoods to explore data reflecting the climate hazards they face, at a scale relevant to their communities. The dashboard also provides an aggregate summary hazard metric.
