Aḥmad IBN ḲUDAMAH Muḳaddasî (a Ḥanbalite, d. A.H. 620; see Ḥ. Kh. <em>passim</em>).</p> <p>Begins: الحمدلله المحمود بکلّ لسان، المعبود فی کل زمان.</p> <p>The <em>Ḥamdalah</em> leads directly to the first subject, the nature and attributes of God. The peculiar doctrines of the Ḥanbalites are prominently discussed.</p> <p>Conclusion: هذا آخر المعتقد الخ.</p> <p>There follows closely, after a <em>Basmalah</em>, a similar Ḥanbalî tract, on the attributes of God. It is introduced by the following Isnâd: اخبرنا الشیخ الامام الاجل الصالح الحافظ طاؤس العلماء ابو نصر ابرهیم بن الفضل السلفی الاصبهانی رحه قال اخبرنا الشیخ الصائن (!) ابو القاسم علی بن احمد بن کشوبة السُمیْرمیُّ رحه قراءة علیه قال اخبرنا الشیخ الفقیه الزاهد ابو جعفر محمد بن عبیدالله بن هاشم الخطیب قال کتب الیّ الشیخ ابوالقاسم سعد بن علی بن محمد الزنجانی رحه قال ذکر لی ابو سعد عبدالواحد ابنُ محمد قال سمعت بعض شیوخنا المحققین الخ.</p> <p>Concludes (fol. 7<em>v</em>.):</p> <p>تمت العقیدة الوحیدة البسیطة الوسیطة لمعرفته تعالی الخ.</p> <p>Both tracts were written on the same day, the last of Jum. The reply of Taḳî al-dîn Abu’l-‘Abbâs Aḥmad b. ‘Abd al-ḥalîm Ḥarrânî, commonly called IBN TAIMÎYAH (a Ḥanbalite, d. A.H. 728), to a question put to him regarding the “attributes of perfection” (صفات الکمال).</p> </li> </ol> <p>This question is prefixed to it. It was composed A.H. 644, and entitled حل مشکلات الاشارات. See Ḥ. Kh. i. 302; Cat. Lugd. iii. 321; and <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6827074">Cat. St. Petersb.</a> 60.</p> <p>This work is dedicated to a patron, who is styled المجلس الرفیع ربیب الدولة و شهاب الملة قدوة الحکماء و الاطبّاء سیّد الاکابر و الفضلاء. It is partly written in refutation of the critics of Râzî, who is here called الفاضل الشارح. It begins: صدر الکتاب قول الشیخ رحمه الله احمد الله علی حسن توفیقه و اسأله هدایة طریقه و الهام الحقّ بتحقیقه افاد الفاضل الشارح ان هذه المعانی الخ.</p> <p>The present copy consists of three separate volumes. Vol. I. (foll. 1-87) contains the first part, on Logic. II. (foll. 88-163) gives the first three انماط of the second part, on Physics. It begins: قال الشیخ هذه اشارات الی اصول و تنبیهات علی جُمَلٍ الخ. III. (foll. 164-251) contains the remaining seven انماط, on Metaphysics, but is slightly imperfect at the end.</p> <p>Carefully written in three hands. Of the eighth or ninth century. Vols. II. and III. are revised throughout. The following note is at the end of Vol. I.: وقفتُ و ظفرتُ بکتاب کتبت (!) فی سنة خمس و ثمانین و ستمائة لکن ما اتفقت المقابلة و التصحیح من کثرة الاشغال و قلة حضور البال اللهم حقق اسرارنا بحقائق الوصال.....کتبه صغیر الدین محمد الطبیب الکیلانی فی قریة الطائف حما عنه (!) فی سنة ٩٨٥.</p> <p>Injured by insects.</p> <p>This MS. Kh. vi. 473, by Ahmad b. Maḥmûd Harawî الخرزياني, commonly called <a href="https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2018003092.html">MAULÂNÂZÂDAH</a>. Cf. Cat. Lugd. iii.364.</p> <p>Another copy of this commentary, in the Bodleian Library (Catal. I., no. DCXVI.), was written A.H. 810.</p> <p>The author, therefore, must have lived as early as the eighth century. He says in his preface:</p> <p> اما بعد فهذه مجلة مشتملة على شرح ما سوى المنطق من المختصر الموسوم بالهداية للامام المحقق و الفيلسوف المدقق .. الابهرى .. امليت (!) مع قلة البضاعة ... بالتماس طائفة من الخلان ... حيث لم يقع له شرح يكشف لهم عن وجوه فوائده نقابها الخ</p> <p>This copy is in a peculiar, not always clear, handwriting. As appears from several notes on the margin of the last page, it was transcribed by ‘Alî b. Ḥâjjî Mîr (?) ‘Alî b. Mas’ûd, for his own use, A.H. 881.</p> <p>Numerous marginal notes. Mubârak Shâh Bukhârî</a>, commonly called MÎRAK; who probably lived in the eighth century.</p> <p>This is a commentary by قال ... اقول ; making, with the exception of the first passage (fol.2), only allusions to the text. The author says in his preface, after a simple <em>Ḥamdalah</em>:<sup>3</sup></p> <p>و بعد فقد سالني بعض احبّائي<sup>4 </sup>ان اكتب للقسمين الطبيعي و الالهي من كتاب الهداية للمولي العلامة .... شرحاً الخ</p> <p>Legibly written; with various marginal notes, among which are glosses of Saiyid Sharîf. It is entitled تحرير القواعد المنطقية في شرح الرسالة الشمسية , but is often simply called قطبي . The author dedicated it to Amîr Aḥmad Sharaf al-din.<sup>2</sup> Cf. Cat. Jupiter, Io and its shadow, by Ralf Burkart, Germany
<p>First place in the 2021 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Galilean moons.</p> <p>This time-lapse of Jupiter taken in 2017 from Germany beautifully illustrates the transit of one of the Galilean moons, Io, in front of Jupiter. As this is simply a moon casting a shadow on a planet it is equivalent to a lunar eclipse on Earth observed from further away. While the shadow of the moon is clearly visible from the beginning, it might be difficult to spot the moon itself against the background of the beautiful atmospheric bands of Jupiter the first time the video is seen.
