Data from: Multiple introductions, polyploidy and mixed reproductive strategies are linked to genetic diversity and structure in the most widespread invasive plant across Southern Ocean archipelagos
<p><span>Biological invasions in remote</span> <span>areas that experience low human activity provide unique opportunities to elucidate processes responsible for invasion success. Here we study the most widespread invasive plant species across the isolated islands of the Southern Ocean, the annual bluegrass, Poa annua. To </span><span>analyze</span><span> geographic variation in genome size, genetic diversity, and reproductive strategies, we sampled all major sub-Antarctic archipelagos in this region and generated microsatellite data for 470 individual plants representing 31 populations. We also estimated genome sizes for a subset of individuals using flow cytometry. Occasional events of island colonization are expected to result in high genetic structure among islands, overall low genetic diversity, and increased self-fertilization, but we show that this is not the case for Poa annua. Microsatellite data indicated low population genetic structure and lack of isolation-by-distance</span> <span>among the sub-Antarctic archipelagos we sampled, but high population structure within each archipelago. We identified high levels of genetic diversity, low clonality, and low selfing rates in sub-Antarctic P. annua populations (contrary to rates typical of continental populations). In turn, estimates of autogamy declined in populations as genetic diversity increased. Additionally, we found that most P. annua individuals are likely tetraploid and that only slight variation exists in genome size across the Southern Ocean. Our findings suggest multiple independent introductions of P. annua into the sub-Antarctic, which</span> <span>promoted the establishment of genetically diverse populations. Despite multiple introductions, the adoption of convergent reproductive strategies (outcrossing) happened independently in each major archipelago. The combination of polyploidy and a mixed reproductive strategy likely benefited P. annua in the Southern Ocean by increasing genetic diversity and its ability to cope with the novel environmental conditions.</span></p>

<p>Data, supplementary material and scripts for the paper "Structure and drivers of social networks and their links with health in older adults"</p> <p>Social network is an important factor in promoting healthy aging. However, the mechanisms linking social capital to health are complex. Moreover, most of the social network analysis studies on older adults consider only participants’ relationships and not how these relationships are themselves connected. In this study, we went further than current ego-centered network studies by determining global social network metrics and the structure of relationships among older adult participants of the RECORD Cohort using the Veritas-Social questionnaire. The aim of this study is to identify key dimensions of social networks of older adults, and to evaluate how these dimensions relate to depressive symptoms, life satisfaction, and well-being. Using Principal Component Analyses (PCA), we identified four social network dimensions with psychological meanings. Dimension 1 (homophily) was positively linked with perceived accessibility to services in one’s residential neighborhood but negatively linked with the level of study. Dimension 2 (social integration) as Dimension 3 (social support) was only linked to the number of people living with ego. Dimension 4 was linked with perceived accessibility to local services. Finally, and rather surprisingly, we found that none of the four network dimensions, even the degree, was linked to the three health status metrics.</p>
Data from: Mitochondrial function declines with age within individuals but is not linked to the pattern of growth or mortality risk in zebra finch
<p>Mitochondrial dysfunction is considered a highly conserved hallmark of ageing. However, most studies in both model and non-model organisms are cross-sectional in design; therefore, little is known, at the individual level, on how mitochondrial function changes with age, its link to early developmental conditions or its relationship with survival. Here we manipulated the postnatal growth in zebra finches (<em>Taeniopygia guttata</em>) via dietary modification that induced accelerated growth without changing adult body size. In the same individuals, we examined blood cells mitochondrial functioning (mainly erythrocytes) when they were young (ca 36 weeks) and again in mid-aged (ca 91 weeks) adulthood. Mitochondrial function was strongly influenced by age but not by postnatal growth conditions. Across all groups, within individual <em>ROUTINE</em> respiration, <em>OXPHOS</em> and <em>OXPHOS</em> coupling efficiency significantly declined with age, while <em>LEAK</em> respiration increased. However, we found no link between mitochondrial function and the probability of survival into relatively old age (ca 4 years). Our results suggests that the association between accelerated growth and reduced longevity, evident in this as in other species, is not attributable to age-related changes in any of the measured mitochondrial function traits.</p>

Data from: Community-level canopy reflectance in grazed grasslands is linked to the habitat preferences of individual plant species
<p class="MsoNormal">Spectral remote sensing provides tools for biological monitoring and can be used to characterize habitat quality in grasslands. These data have been used to study the relationships between plant community composition and remotely sensed canopy reflectance in grazed grasslands. The study area is located on the island of Öland, Sweden, and the data were collected in grazed grasslands that represent a succession from previously arable fields to old semi-natural pastures. All included grassland sites have been assigned to three different classes of grassland age, defined by the grazing continuity in years: <span>young (5–14 years), intermediate-aged (15–49 years), and old (>50 years).</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The plant community data consist of presences/absences for 100 vascular plant species in 104 (4 m × 4 m) sample plots positioned in open grassland vegetation. Information on species' habitat preferences is included and has been used to explain the associations between plant species' occurrences and the variation in community-level canopy reflectance.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The remote sensing data consist of 317 hyperspectral bands in the wavelength regions 414–1322 nm, 1496–1797 nm, and 2050–2351 nm, and show the mean reflectance in each spectral band for the 104 sample plots. The main gradient in the hyperspectral data is characterized by contrasting reflectance values between bands located in the NIR spectra and bands located in the red, blue, and SWIR spectra.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Grassland canopy reflectance was able to explain variation in the occurrences of individual plant species, particularly those with distinct habitat preferences. Species' habitat preferences indicated that vegetation reflectance in the red, blue, SWIR, and NIR spectra was linked to the plant-availability of mineral nitrogen. In contrast, species' phosphorus preferences showed stronger associations with reflectance in the green and red-edge spectra.</p>
Data from: Positive plant diversity effects on soil microbial drought resistance are linked to variation in labile carbon and microbial community structure
<p><span>Biodiversity loss and drought are substantially altering both above-and belowground terrestrial ecosystem functioning, but mechanistic understanding of plant diversity effects on the drought resistance of soil microbial biomass remains limited. </span></p> <p><span>We designed a mesocosm experiment to examine drought resistance of soil microbial biomass along a plant species richness gradient (five plant species richness levels based on old-field communities). We calculated resistance of microbial biomass to drought and recorded key belowground properties which may influence microbial resistance to drought (i.e., microbial diversity, microbial community structure, soil carbon stocks and root biomass). </span></p> <p><span>Plant species richness had a positive effect on microbial resistance to drought. Variation in microbial resistance to drought was linked to properties of the fungal community in ambient soil (Shannon diversity, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal richness and abundance) but not soil bacterial diversity. Moreover, microbial resistance to drought increased with increasing root biomass and dissolved organic carbon recorded under ambient conditions. </span></p> <p><span>These results highlight the importance of plant diversity for microbial biomass stability in our old-field study system with implications for biogeochemical cycling, and suggest that indirect effects of plant species richness on labile soil carbon and soil fungi may drive resistance of soil microbial biomass to drought. </span></p>

Data from: Identifying links between the biodiversity impacts and monetary costs of alien birds
<p>This dataset accompanies a published paper (Evans et al. 2023) which aims to identify links between the biodiversity impacts and monetary costs of alien bird species. In this paper we used mixed-effects models to test: (1) whether alien bird species with severe biodiversity impacts also had high monetary costs; (2) whether specific types of biodiversity impacts were associated with high monetary costs; and (3) whether certain factors caused alien bird species to have both severe biodiversity impacts and high monetary costs. This dataset includes all data used for the analysis, including biodiversity impact scores and monetary costs for each alien bird species, and the variables tested for their influence on these biodiversity impacts and costs. Please refer to Evans et al. (2023) for details on the methods used. The abstract to the published paper follows.</p> <ol> <li>Alien species can be damaging to native biodiversity, human well-being and the economy. Identifying the complete range of impacts they cause, and the ways that these impacts are connected, may inform the prioritisation of management actions to mitigate impacts.</li> <li>Using datasets on the biodiversity impacts and monetary costs (damage and management costs) of alien birds, we aimed to establish whether species with the most severe biodiversity impacts also had the highest costs; whether types of biodiversity impact were associated with high costs; and whether specific factors associated with alien species are linked to both damaging biodiversity impacts and high costs.</li> <li>We identified a positive relationship between a specific type of biodiversity impact (predation) and costs, possibly because predation by alien birds can be severely damaging to native species and therefore attracts management actions. However, predation impacts are likely to occur more frequently and to be easier to identify than some other impact mechanisms such as hybridisation and transmission of diseases, and they are therefore likely to be more frequently managed, and hence to have costs.</li> <li>We identified a specific species characteristic (generalism) to be associated with severe biodiversity impacts and high costs, probably because generalist species have greater opportunity to cause impacts, whether they be on biodiversity or the economy, or both. We also found widely distributed alien birds to be associated with high costs, probably also because these species have greater opportunity to cause impacts.</li> <li>Management interventions that prevent the introduction of both predatory and generalist alien bird species, or that reduce their geographic distribution at early stages of invasions, may have significant biodiversity and economic benefits.</li> </ol>
Sample extraction and SNP sequencing data for: Identification of sex-linked SNP markers in wild populations of monomorphic birds
<p><span>Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analyses are a powerful tool for population genetics, pedigree reconstruction and phenotypic trait mapping. However, the untapped potential of SNP markers to discriminate the sex of individuals in species with reduced sexual dimorphism or of individuals during immature stages remains a largely unexplored avenue. Here, we develop a novel protocol for molecular sexing of birds based on the detection of unique Z- and W-linked SNP markers. Our method is based on the identification of two unique loci, one in each sexual chromosome. Individuals are considered males when they show no calls for the W-linked SNP and are heterozygotic or homozygotic for the Z-linked SNP, while females show both Z- and W-linked SNP calls. We validated the method in the Jackdaw (<em>Corvus</em> <em>monedula</em>). The reduced sexual dimorphism in this species makes it difficult to sex individuals in the wild. We assessed the reliability of the method using 36 individuals of known sex and found that their sex was correctly assigned in 100% of cases. The sex-linked markers also proved to be widely applicable to discriminate males and females from a sample of 927 genotyped individuals of different maturity stages with an accuracy of 99.5%. Given that SNP markers are increasingly used in quantitative genetic analyses of wild populations, the approach we propose has a great potential to be integrated into broader genetic research programmes without the need for additional sexing techniques.</span></p>
