Intra-specific variation in metal tolerance modulate competition between two marine diatoms

This project contains data for the manuscript Intra-specific variation in metal tolerance modulate competition between two marine diatoms. The experiments tests how different toxic concentrations of heavy metals modulates competition between an artificially assembled community of Baltic Sea diatoms (four clonal strains each of the two diatom species Skeletonema marinoi (SM) and Thalassiosira baltica (TB). Briefly we use toxic Dose Response curves (DRC) to model how inter and intra specific selection between strains is expected to be modulated under Cadmium, Copper and Silver stress. The stress level was set at the average 50% inhibition concentration (EC50) between all eight strains. Strains were mixed at even biomass based on Relative Chl a Fluorescence Units (RFU) and cultivated semi-continuously to maintain exponential growth. The growth of individual species was measured through microscopy observations and the photosynthetic capacity was monitored using Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) fluorometry. A experimental design flow figure is included as a supplement.

The complete functional set of scripts, statistical analysis, and graphical illustrations in R can be found on github: https://github.com/Bearstar85/Selection_Competition_2021

Engineering the Radiative Dynamics of Thermalized Excitons with Metal Interfaces

Here we analyze the emission properties of excitons in two metal structures: placed near a single metal (silver) interface and placed symmetrically at the center of a Fabry-Perot microcavity. The exciton is modeled as a point dipole and as an extended 2D dipole. With the momentum dependent emission rates for the extended exciton, we can also examine its temperature dependent behavior by applying a momentum distribution. We investigate the cases of a Maxwell-Boltzmann statistical distribution and a Bose-Einstein statistical distribution (since excitons form composite bosons).

The dataset provided are the Mathematica codes used to generate the plots in our paper. The point dipole results are contained in the notebook files: Emission Rate 2, Multiple Interfaces, Multiple Interfaces_Par (1), and Multiple Interfaces_Perp. The extended exciton results are contained in the notebook files: Extended Exciton 2-3 and BE stats.

Dissolved trace metal depth profile concentrations from the North Pacific Ocean Gradients 3 (KM1906) spring 2019 cruise

This dataset contains dissolved trace metal depth profiles collected in the North Pacific Ocean in spring of 2019 on the KM1906 Gradients 3 cruise (Chief Scientist E. Virginia Armbrust). The project was funded by the Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology Gradients program (SCOPE award 426570SP to SGJ). The samples were collected by trace metal clean rosette. Data were produced at the University of Southern California Marine Trace Elements Lab run by Prof. Seth G. John. Briefly, the metals were preconcentrated using an Elemental Scientific Inc. SeaFast automated robot, detected by Element 2 ICP-MS and quantified using isotope dilution as described in Hawco et al. 2020. GCA https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gca.2020.05.005. All concentrations are dissolved (<0.2um SUPOR filter) and reported as nmol/L.

Data for: Heavy metal pollution impacts soil bacterial community structure and antimicrobial resistance at the Birmingham 35th Avenue Superfund Site

The data in this archive are the results of a study on the impact of heavy metals (HMs) on the soil microbiota of an urban Superfund site in Alabama. HMs are known to modify bacterial communities both in the laboratory and in situ. Consequently, soils in HM-contaminated sites such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund sites are predicted to have altered ecosystem functioning, with potential ramifications for the health of organisms, including humans, that live nearby. Further, several studies have shown that heavy metal-resistant (HMR) bacteria often also display antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and therefore HM-contaminated soils could potentially act as reservoirs that could disseminate AMR genes into human-associated pathogenic bacteria. To explore this possibility, topsoil samples were collected from six public locations in the zip code 35207 (the home of the North Birmingham 35th Avenue Superfund Site) and in six public areas in the neighboring zip code, 35214. 35027 soils had significantly elevated levels of the HMs As, Mn, Pb, and Zn, and sequencing of the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene revealed that elevated HM concentrations correlated with reduced microbial diversity and altered community structure. While there was no difference between zip codes in the proportion of total culturable HMR bacteria, bacterial isolates with HMR almost always also exhibited AMR. Metagenomes inferred using PICRUSt2 also predicted significantly higher mean relative frequencies in 35207 for several AMR genes related to both specific and broad-spectrum AMR phenotypes. Together, these results support the hypothesis that chronic HM pollution alters the soil bacterial community structure in ecologically meaningful ways and may also select for bacteria with increased potential to contribute to AMR in human disease.
