Online Aerosol Chemical Characterization by Extractive Electrospray Ionization − Ultrahigh-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (EESI-Orbitrap)

<p>These datasets are the raw data presented in the presented work of &quot;Online Aerosol Chemical Characterization by Extractive Electrospray Ionization &minus; Ultrahigh-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (EESI-Orbitrap)&quot; in <em>Environmental Science &amp; Technology Journal</em>, doi:10.1021/acs.est.9b07090.</p> <p>Abstract:&nbsp;Current mass spectrometry techniques for the online&nbsp;measurement of organic aerosol (OA) composition are subjected to either&nbsp;thermal/ionization-induced artifacts or limited mass resolving power,&nbsp;hindering accurate molecular characterization. Here, we combined the soft&nbsp;ionization capability of extractive electrospray ionization (EESI) and the&nbsp;ultrahigh mass resolution of Orbitrap for real-time, near-molecular&nbsp;characterization of OAs. Detection limits as low as tens of ng m<sup>&minus;3</sup> with&nbsp;linearity up to hundreds of &mu;g m<sup>&minus;3</sup> at 0.2 Hz time resolution were&nbsp;observed for single- and mixed-component calibrations. The performance of the EESI-Orbitrap system was further evaluated with laboratory-generated secondary OAs (SOAs) and filter extracts of ambient particulate&nbsp;matter. The high mass accuracy and resolution (140 000 at <em>m/z</em> 200) of&nbsp;the EESI-Orbitrap system enable unambiguous identification of the&nbsp;aerosol components&rsquo; molecular composition and allow a clear separation&nbsp;between adjacent peaks, which would be significantly overlapping if a medium-resolution (20 000) mass analyzer was used.&nbsp;Furthermore, the tandem mass spectrometry (MS<sup>2</sup>) capability provides valuable insights into the compound structure. For instance,&nbsp;the MS<sup>2</sup> analysis of ambient OA samples and lab-generated biogenic SOAs points to specific SOA precursors in ambient air among a&nbsp;range of possible isomers based on fingerprint fragment ions. Overall, this newly developed and characterized EESI-Orbitrap system&nbsp;will advance our understanding of the formation and evolution of atmospheric aerosols.</p> <p>Structure of the datasets: The raw data are separated into individual file of&nbsp;excel format for the figures. Simulation data from Figure 4 can be generated using the matlab code named <em>Figure4PeakSimulation.m.</em>&nbsp;</p>

Linking Twitter & Survey Data [online workshop]

<p>Twitter has become an important data source for many social scientists. While using data from Twitter can help to avoid or alleviate some of the issues related to self-report data, such as social desirability or problems with recollection, Twitter data have their own sets of limitations, including the lack of information about individuals or missing outcome variables of interest. Linking data from surveys and Twitter is a way to combine the unique strengths of the two data types and overcome some of their respective limitations. The online workshop led by Luke Sloan (Cardiff University), Johannes Breuer (GESIS), and Libby Bishop (GESIS) covered the key steps in the research process of linking Twitter and survey data. Specifically, the workshop addressed the phases of study planning, (Twitter) data collection, data processing, and archiving and sharing. The workshop drew on recent experiences from different studies that the instructors were involved in and provided guidance on how to address the ethical and operational issues associated with linking Twitter and survey data in the different phases of the research process.</p> <p>The video is also available for viewing on <a href="https://youtu.be/IG1jJ3WP2h8">YouTube</a>.</p>

Full dataset for: Diversifying environmental volunteers by engaging with online communities

<p>1.         Environmental volunteering can benefit participants and nature through improving physical and mental wellbeing while encouraging environmental stewardship. To enhance achievement of these outcomes, conservation organisations need to reach different groups of people to increase participation in environmental volunteering. This paper explores what engages communities searching online for environmental volunteering.</p> <p>2.         We conducted a literature review of 1032 papers to determine key factors fostering participation by existing volunteers in environmental projects. We found the most important factor was to tailor projects to the motivations of participants. Also important were:  promoting projects to people with relevant interests; meeting the perceived benefits of volunteers and removing barriers to participation.</p> <p>3.         We then assessed the composition and factors fostering participation of the NatureVolunteers's online community (n = 2216) of potential environmental volunteers and compared findings with those from the literature review. We asked whether projects advertised by conservation organisations meet motivations and interests of this online community.</p> <p>4.         Using Facebook insights and Google Analytics we found that the online community were on average younger than extant communities observed in studies of environmental volunteering. Their motivations were also different as they were more interested in physical activity and using skills and less in social factors. They also exhibited preference for projects which are outdoor based, and which offer close contact with wildlife. Finally, we found that the online community showed a stronger preference for habitat improvement projects over those involving species-survey based citizen science.</p> <p>5.         Our results demonstrate mis-matches between what our online community are looking for and what is advertised by conservation organisations.  The online community are looking for projects which are more solitary, more physically active and more accessible by organised transport. We discuss how our results may be used by conservation organisations to better engage with more people searching for environmental volunteering opportunities online.</p> <p>6.         We conclude that there is a pool of young people attracted to environmental volunteering projects whose interests are different to those of current volunteers.  If conservation organisations can develop projects that meet these interests, they can engage larger and more diverse communities in nature volunteering.</p>

<p>Dataset for&nbsp;The use of food swaps to encourage healthier online food choices.</p> <p>Online grocery stores offer opportunities to encourage healthier food choices at the moment that consumers put a product of their choice in their basket. This study aims to examine the effect of a swap offer, Nutri-Score labelling and a descriptive norm message on the healthiness of food choices in such an online food basket. Additionally, it is examined whether these interventions make it more motivating and easier for consumers to select healthier food choices and whether potential effects are moderated by consumers&rsquo; health interest. Hypotheses were tested in a simulated online supermarket. Dutch participants (n=550) chose their preferred product out of six product options for four different categories (breakfast cereals, crackers, pizza and muesli bars). Participants were randomly allocated to one of eight groups based on the interventions (Nutri-Score, swap offer, norm message and the five different combinations). Primary outcome was the difference in nutrient profiling (NP) healthiness score of product choices, for which a lower score represents a healthier product. Results show that a swap offer (NP score M=10.52, SD =16.15) and Nutri-Score labelling (NP score M=15.38, SD=15.24) significantly improved NP healthiness scores compared to the control condition (NP score M=18.03, SD=14.02), whereas a norm message did not (NP score M=17.96, SD=15.15). These findings provide valuable insights for policy makers and practitioners on the implementation of swap offers and Nutri-Score labelling in the online store environment.</p>

Data from: An R package and online resource for macroevolutionary studies using the ray-finned fish tree of life

1. Comprehensive, time-scaled phylogenies provide a critical resource for many questions in ecology, evolution, and biodiversity. Methodological advances have increased the breadth of taxonomic coverage in phylogenetic data; however, accessing and reusing these data remain challenging. 2. We introduce the Fish Tree of Life website and associated R package fishtree to provide convenient access to sequences, phylogenies, fossil calibrations, and diversification rate estimates for the most diverse group of vertebrate organisms, the ray-finned fishes. The Fish Tree of Life website presents subsets and visual summaries of phylogenetic and comparative data, and is complemented by the R package, which provides flexible programmatic access to the same underlying data source for advanced users wishing to extend or reanalyze the data. 3. We demonstrate functionality with an overview of the website, and show three examples of advanced usage through the R package. First, we test for the presence of long branch attraction artifacts across the fish tree of life. The second example examines the effects of habitat on diversification rate in the pufferfishes. The final example demonstrates how a community phylogenetic analysis could be conducted with the package. 4. This resource makes a large comparative vertebrate dataset easily accessible via the website, while the R package enables the rapid reuse and reproducibility of research results via its ability to easily integrate with other R packages and software for molecular biology and comparative methods.
