(b) Some peninsular elements might represent a recent (Plio-Pleistocene) north-to-south colonisation of the Baja California Peninsula from northern Sonora and Southern California, these Holarctic (O. cartwrighti) and Nearctic (mammals, birds, fringe-toed lizards, gopher snakes, western rattlesnakes) in origin (Howden and Cartwright 1963; Howden 1973; Murphy and Aguirre-Léon 2002; Rojas-Soto et al. 2003; Escalante et al. 2004, 2013).

Onthophagus bajacalifornianus shows a vicariant distribution, following the Baja Californian Paleoamerican sub-pattern. The neighbouring species follow the Mountain Paleoamerican subpattern.
