Multi-survey data collection on Finnish household waste sorting and recycling

<p>This dataset consists of surveys that have been marked with letters from A to L.</p> <ul> <li>Surveys A, B, D, E, F, G, H, I, K and L have at least one questionnaire. Each questionnaire, presented with questions in both Finnish and English, has its results displayed in the dataset table. Dataset tables haven't been translated, they are in Finnish.</li> <li>Survey C is an interview based study. Questions have been translated into English, but the interview data is in Finnish only.</li> <li>Survey J is an experiment on how to target communication in social media. The dataset shows how many times each post has been watched, which hastags were used etc.</li> </ul> <p>The work was carried out by groups of students as part of the Sustainable Product Development Project course in November-December 2023. All the surveys are interconnected in one way or another with the promotion of household waste sorting and recycling, as the topic of the assignment came from HAMK Smart research group's KOTILO project (Participatory Design of Source Separation in Recycling). Granulometric database of individual fragments of shredded Waste Electric and Electronic Equipments

<p>This dataset describes the granulometric properties of individual fragments of Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipments (WEEE). It was collected during the PhD thesis of Alexis Barthet (Mines Paris - PSL), under the supervision of Emilie Chautru (Mines Paris - PSL), Herv&eacute; CHauris (Mines Paris - PSL), Thomas Romary (Mines Paris PSL) and Vincent Semetey (Institut de Recherche de Chimie Paris), in 2021-2022.</p> <p>Two batches of WEEE were collected and sieved. Indivudal fragments were collected, and their picture, mass, density and type of fragments were measured. After segmentation of the pictures, their lengths, their widths, and their thickness were also collected. Both segmented and original pictures are available. The size of a pixel in mm for each image is also available for additional work on the pictures.</p> <p>A description of the fragments as well as the methods used to collect the data is avalaible in the article "Advanced granulometric characterization of shredded waste printed circuit boards for sampling" about to be published in the journal "Waste Management" by the authors mentionned in the first paragraph.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Plastic waste associated with disease on coral reefs

Plastic waste can promote microbial colonization by pathogens implicated in outbreaks of disease in the ocean. We assessed the influence of plastic waste on disease risk in 124,000 reef-building corals from 159 reefs in the Asia-Pacific region. The likelihood of disease increases from 4% to 89% when corals are in contact with plastic. Structurally complex corals are eight times more likely to be affected by plastic, suggesting that microhabitats for reef-associated organisms and valuable fisheries will be disproportionately affected. Plastic levels on coral reefs correspond to estimates of terrestrial mismanaged plastic waste entering the ocean. We estimate that 11.1 billion plastic items are entangled on coral reefs across the Asia-Pacific and project this number to increase 40% by 2025. Plastic waste management is critical for reducing diseases that threaten ecosystem health and human livelihoods.

Understanding brain waste: Unequal opportunities for skills development between highly skilled women and men, migrants and nonmigrants

<p>Brain waste studies seldom analyse the skills development of tertiary-educated</p> <p>workers according to gender and country of origin. Combining statistical analyses,</p> <p>participatory workshops and 77 qualitative interviews on employment trajectories</p> <p>with highly skilled workers in Switzerland, I offer three contributions. An</p> <p>intersectional perspective reveals unequal opportunities of skills development:</p> <p>Swiss-born men have the highest rates of employment, income and jobs commensurate</p> <p>with their education, followed by foreign-born men, then Swiss-born women</p> <p>and lastly foreign-born women. Second, a multiscalar perspective shows how actions</p> <p>by individuals, families, employers and the state favour or constrain skills advancement</p> <p>among women and men. Individual perceptions of gender roles and unequal</p> <p>childcare responsibilities within couples constrain women&#39;s skills development. Further</p> <p>constraints are set by the state and employers&#39; policies and practices regarding</p> <p>migration, childcare, taxation and hiring. Third, a spatial&ndash;temporal perspective unveils</p> <p>that gender inequalities arise at particular moments (migration and childbirth) and</p> <p>places (lacking childcare services and limited employment).</p>

Data in support of: Biomineralization of plastic waste to improve the strength of plastic-reinforced cement mortar

<p></p><p>The development of methods to reuse large volumes of plastic waste is essential to curb the environmental impact of plastic pollution. Plastic-reinforced cementitious materials (PRCs), such as plastic-reinforced mortar (PRM), may be potential avenues to productively use large quantities of low-value plastic waste. However, poor bonding between the plastic and cement matrix reduces the strength of PRCs, limiting its viable applications. In this study, calcium carbonate biomineralization techniques were applied to coat plastic waste and improved the compressive strength of PRM. Two biomineralization treatments were examined: enzymatically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) and microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP). MICP treatment of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resulted in PRMs with compressive strengths similar to that of plastic-free mortar and higher than the compressive strengths of PRMs with untreated or EICP-treated PET. Based on the results of this study, MICP was used to treat hard-to-recycle types 3–7 plastic waste. No plastics investigated in this study inhibited the MICP process. PRM samples with 5% MICP-treated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and mixed type 3–7 plastic had compressive strengths similar to plastic-free mortar. These results indicate that MICP treatment can improve PRM strength and that MICP-treated PRM shows promise as a method to reuse plastic waste.</p><p></p>

Data from the thesis diagnosis of waste, application possibilities and future demand for green coconut shells, with evaluation of information uncertainty

<p>Information on the quantities of green coconut shells produced in coastal regions is not well known, which can make it difficult to manage these frequently wasted materials, as well as the understanding that they can be included in a production process as a raw material, with various possibilities of use and income generation. Given this situation, the objective of this research is to develop a diagnosis of the potential use of green coconut shells, after water consumption, in public places in municipalities in the southern and southern coast of Bahia. It is also intended to identify the future demand of the potential possibility for the recovery of the bark, and provide subsidies that can be used to organize the use of this material. In this context, the method applied in this research consists of five steps: (i) literature review; (ii) diagnosis of bark situation in the study region; (iii) evaluation of the uncertainty of the estimated amount of shells; (iv) possibilities for applying green coconut shells and preparing the analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT); and (v) obtaining future demand for the potential output for the region through quantitative techniques for predicting time series with uncertainty assessment. The main scientific contributions of this work consist, therefore, (a) in the diagnosis of the waste of green coconut shells in the region; (b) the possibilities of application of coconut shells; (c) in the demand forecasting method elaborated for time series without trends and with high variability; and (d) in assessing the uncertainty of the quantitative information obtained. Thus, the study developed can be used as a subsidy, either for replicating the research process in other types of waste allocated in any region, or for the adoption of public policies to manage these materials, or even for the encouragement and creation of an appropriate productive scenario for the management of green coconut shells in the study region, which contributes to the understanding of the potential for generating environmental, economic and social value from the use and processing of these wasted materials.</p>

A hybrid chemical-biological approach can upcycle mixed plastic waste with reduced cost and carbon footprint

<p>Derived from renewable feedstocks, such as biomass, polylactic acid (PLA) is considered a more environmentally-friendly plastic than conventional petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, PLA must still be recycled and its growing popularity and mixture with PET plastics at the disposal stage poses a cross-contamination threat in existing recycling facilities and results in low-value and low-quality recycled products.&nbsp;Hybrid upcycling has been proposed as a promising sustainable solution for mixed plastic waste; but its techno-economic and lifecycle environmental performance remain understudied. Here we propose a hybrid upcycling approach using a biocompatible ionic liquid (IL) to first chemically depolymerize plastics, then convert the depolymerized stream via biological upgrading with no extra separation. We show that over 95% of mixed PET/PLA was depolymerized into their respective monomers, which then served as the sole carbon source for the growth of&nbsp;<i>Pseudomonas putida</i>, enabling the conversion of the depolymerized plastics into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). In comparison to conventional commercial PHA, the estimated optimal production cost and carbon footprint are reduced by 62% and 29%, respectively.</p>
