TMEM97 is correlated with the clinical features and clinical prognosis, and acts as a potential marker of multiple myeloma
<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Background</strong>: TMEM97 has been proven to be involved in many biological processes of malignancies. This study was designed to investigate the role of TMEM97 in multiple myeloma progression and clinical features and prognosis. We also predicted the potential mechanism of TMEM97 in MM prognosis.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> In the present study, five GEO datasets including GSE24080, GSE13591, GSE2113, GSE19784 and GSE2658 were obtained from the National Cancer for Biotechnology Information database for analysis of TMEM97 expression and clinical features and prognosis in MM.We performed GSEA analysis to investigate the potential mechanism of TMEM97 in MM.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>We collected multiple myeloma data based on GEO datasets, and demonstrated the expression level of TMEM97 increased with the progression of multiple myeloma. Also the expression level of TMEM97 was correlated significantly with ISS stage in MM patients.Additionally, TMEM97 was more likely to be associated with important factors of MM prognosis, such as cytogenetic, B2M, CRP, LDH, BMPC, MRI and HGB. The multivariate analysis showed that TMEM97 was an independent factor for OS and EFS. In addition, top positively correlated genes with TMEM97 covered PUS7, GGCT, PFAS, CTPS1, RFC4 and PRMT3.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong>The expression of TMEM97 was a factor affecting the survival and prognosis of MM patients. TMEM97 may be an important prognosis biomarker and promising therapeutic target in multiple myeloma.</p>
Assessing the population genetic structure of introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Lake Tahoe basin: A case for understanding hybridization potential during the reintroduction of the native Endangered Species Act listed Lahontan cutthroat trout (O. clarkii henshawi)
<p class="MsoNormal">Hybridization with introduced or invasive species is a major threat and driver of population declines in native salmonids. The rainbow trout (<em>Oncorhynchus mykiss</em>, RBT) has been widely introduced globally and represents an important invasive species, often establishing entrenched naturalized populations. The cutthroat trout (<em>Oncorhynchus clarkii</em>, CT), a close congener, is particularly susceptible to competition and hybridization from RBT introductions which has led to range-wide population declines and loss of CT genetic variation. The Lahontan CT (<em>O. c. henshawi</em>, LCT) whose historic distribution included the Lake Tahoe basin, was extirpated by the 1940s due to overfishing and introduction of nonnative salmonids, including now naturalized RBT. Here, we characterize genetic variation of RBT in a subset of Lake Tahoe tributaries to assess potential homing of RBT to streams for spawning, thereby informing LCT reintroduction. Diploid reproductively viable RBT were stocked annually into Lake Tahoe from the late 1800s until the mid-2000s by California and Nevada fish and wildlife agencies, planting the same commonly raised hatchery strains over time. Since 2007, triploid RBT comprise the bulk of RBT planted. Despite extensive dispersal from stocking locations, our analyses revealed variation in population differentiation among tributaries, with individuals from spatially proximate streams clustering across multiple population genetic analyses. Although subtle, we detected evidence for genetic differentiation among tributaries from the southern, western, and northern regions, including surprising structure involving a single tributary. These results illustrate the extent of differentiation within and among streams and could inform possibilities for and implications of RBT removal and LCT reintroduction.</p>

Evolution of parasitoid host preference and performance in response to an invasive host acting as evolutionary trap
<p>The invasion of a novel host species can create a mismatch in host choice and offspring survival (performance) when native parasitoids attempt to exploit the invasive host without being able to circumvent its resistance mechanisms. Invasive hosts can therefore act as evolutionary trap reducing parasitoids' fitness and this may eventually lead to their extinction. Yet, escape from the trap can occur when parasitoids evolve behavioural avoidance or a physiological strategy compatible with the trap host, resulting in either host-range expansion or a complete host-shift. We developed an individual based model to investigate which conditions promote parasitoids to evolve behavioural preference that matches their performance, including host-trap avoidance, and which conditions lead to adaptations to the unsuitable hosts. The model was inspired by solitary endo-parasitoids attacking larval host stages. One important aspect of these conditions was reduced host survival during incompatible interaction, where a failed parasitization attempt by a parasitoid resulted not only in death of her offspring but also in host killing. This non-reproductive host mortality had a strong influence on the likelihood of establishment of novel host-parasitoid relationship, in some cases constraining adaptation to the trap host species. Moreover, our model revealed that host-search efficiency and genetic variation in host-preference play a key role in the likelihood that parasitoids will include the suboptimal host in their host range, or will evolve behavioural avoidance resulting in specialization and host-range conservation, respectively. Hence, invasive species might change the evolutionarily trajectory of native parasitoid species, which is important for predicting biocontrol ability of native parasitoids towards novel hosts.</p>
Going to School at Better Schools can Improve Children's Health: The Health benefits of the 2009 Right to Education Act in India
<p>This work demonstrates the unintended benefits to health that can result from school policy. We evaluate the impact of a large education reform (Right to Education Act, 2009) in India on children’s health, measured as height-for-age z-scores. Using data from the India Human Development Surveys, we employ a difference-in-differences approach that exploits differential timing in the adoption of the reform across states. We find positive health effects due to the reform with larger impacts in states that adopted it earlier. The benefits do not differ across boys and girls but is larger for children from lower castes, and those who live farther from school. Our findings are robust to multiple robustness checks, including a regression discontinuity design that uses children’s birth-year as a source of variation for their potential exposure to the mandates of the Right to Education Act. </p>
