Reconstructed Three-decade Global Fine-Grained Nighttime Light Dataset

Nighttime light (NTL) is a foundational data source for studying human activities from a remote sensing perspective. This dataset from 1992 to 2021 is the first global long-term and fine-grained NTL observations. It represents a milestone in facilitating the study of human activities. It is created by a new super-resolution model DeepNTL which converts DMSP-OLS images into NPP-VIIRS images. Compared with baseline models, including RCAN, SwinIR and AutoEncoder, DeepNTL has the hightest accuracy and best generalization ability for untrained years. It provides a good extension of NPP-VIIRS to the early years, and the future annual NPP-VIIRS data can be directly appended to this dataset by users own. More information about the dataset can be found in the "read_me.txt" file. Technical details and evaluations are presented in our paper. Any questions are welcome to be sent to jinyuguo23@m.fudan.edu.cn.

Annalakshmi - One who Bestows Grain
Annalakshmi = Annam + Lakshmi. Annam - Food. Lakshmi - one who Bestows. Every south Indian family will have this brass or silver idol planted in a bowl of rice. This symbolizes that God will forever bless the family with shortageless food. The female member mostly who cook and serve food for the family are also regarded as Annalakshmi-es.
Measures of equatorial and polar lengths of pollen grains in Sorbus, Aria and Hedlundia from Norway

The genus Sorbus s.l. consists of small to medium-sized trees primarily found in coastal areas, with three European hotspots of diversification: Fennoscandia, South-East Europe, and the British Isles. Taxonomic classification of Sorbus s.l. in Europe is still unresolved, and this study aims to address this issue by examining the pollen morphology of various Sorbus hybrids. Pollen morphology of 16 specimens from 13 species of Sorbus s.str., Aria and Hedlundia, some of them common, others are endemic and listed as threatened species, were studied. Measurements of the polar and equatorial axis of all pollen grains show that there are variations in pollen size and shape among different hybrids, with a correlation between ploidy levels and the equatorial diameter of the pollen. Surface structures of the pollen were observed using SEM. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed to analyze the pollen characters, and the results show that it is possible to separate Aria from Sorbus and Hedlundia based on the length of the polar axis of the pollen grain, while the number of perforations is important for classification within Hedlundia. The study concludes that pollen morphology can be a useful tool for distinguishing between different Sorbus hybrids and can thus aid in understanding their past distributions.

Dataset for paper entitled, 'Tailoring equiaxed β-grain structures in Ti-6Al-4V coaxial electron beam wire additive manufacturing'

Dataset for paper entitled, 'Tailoring equiaxed β-grain structures in Ti-6Al-4V coaxial electron beam wire additive manufacturing'. Abstract: High-deposition-rate, directed-energy-deposition additive manufacturing (DED-AM) processes typically produce Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) components with coarse columnar β-grain structures that lead to undesirable mechanical anisotropy, as well as a fine heterogeneous lamellar transformation microstructure, which is very different to that seen standard wrought products. This arises because of the intrinsic lack of constitutional undercooling at the solidification front, and the subsequent high cooling rates and rapid thermal cycling experienced by the deposited material. In this work, the more refined primary β-grain solidification structures and textures seen in components built with the novel coaxial electron beam wire DED AM (CEWAM) process have been characterised in detail, for the first time, with the aim of investigating the potential for this technology to directly replicate the β-annealed damage-tolerant microstructure used in large Ti64 aerospace forgings. Due to its different lower energy density solidification conditions, it has been confirmed, by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis and β-grain reconstruction in three orthogonal cross-sections, that the CEWAM process changes the melt conditions to promote β-grain nucleation ahead of the solidification front, which can result in a highly refined, equiaxed, β-grain structure. However, the conditions for refinement were marginal and a mixed grain structure was commonly observed in thicker sections. Additionally, the subsequent grain-growth stability during β-annealing was investigated. It is shown that an equivalent microstructure can be achieved to that seen in a standard β-forged component, by grain structure homogenisation and slow cooling through the β transus, to promote α colony nucleation, allowing direct part substitution. This was made possible by the refined primary β-grain structure achieved during deposition with the CEWAM solidification conditions which, importantly, are also shown to lead to a weaker texture than in a typical forging.

Paper doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.mtla.2021.101202

Dataset for paper entitled, 'Isomorphic grain inoculation in Ti-6Al-4V during additive manufacturing'

Dataset for paper entitled, 'Isomorphic grain inoculation in Ti-6Al-4V during additive manufacturing'. Abstract: The potential for using isomorphic inoculation (ISI) to grain refine titanium alloys in additive manufacturing was investigated by adding TiAlNb particles to Ti-64 during building test samples. A surviving particle was identified and its crystallographic relationship with the matrix studied by transmission Kikuchi diffraction. The particle and bulk matrix grain were shown to have the same crystallographic orientation, demonstrating that the ISI mechanism of solidification bypasses the nucleation step in favour of direct epitaxial growth.

Paper doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.mlblux.2020.100057

Dataset for paper entitled, 'The potential for grain refinement of Wire-Arc Additive Manufactured (WAAM) Ti-6Al-4V by ZrN and TiN inoculation'

Dataset for paper entitled, 'The potential for grain refinement of Wire-Arc Additive Manufactured (WAAM) Ti-6Al-4V by ZrN and TiN inoculation'. Abstract: Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) of large near-net-shape titanium components has the potential to reduce costs and lead-time in many industrial sectors including aerospace. However, with titanium alloys, such as Ti-6Al-4V, standard WAAM processing conditions result in solidification microstructures comprising large cm- scale, <001> fibre textured, columnar β grains, which are detrimental to mechanical performance. In order to reduce the size of the solidified β-grains, as well as refine their columnar morphology and randomise their texture, two cubic nitride phases, TiN and ZrN were investigated as potential grain refining inoculants. To avoid the cost of manufacturing new wire, experimental trials were performed using powder adhered to the surface of the deposited tracks. With TiN particle additions, the β grain size was successfully reduced and modified from columnar to equiaxed grains, with an average size of 300 µm, while ZrN powder was shown to be ineffective at low addition levels studied. Clusters of TiN particles were found to be responsible for nucleating multiple β Ti grains. By utilizing the Burgers orientation relationship, EBSD investigation showed that a Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship could be demonstrated between the refined primary β grains and TiN particles.

Paper doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.addma.2021.101928

Dataset to "Fine-sediment erosion and ridge morphodynamics in coarse-grained immobile beds"

The dataset is connected to the paper "Fine-sediment erosion and ridge morphodynamics in coarse-grained immobile beds".

The dataset is subdivided in "topographic" and "PIV" data. Each dataset refers to an experiment presented in the paper.

The filenames of the topographic data specify the location where the data were collected ("upstream" or "downstream"). The topographic data contain the bed elevations measured around each sphere over a measurement area as wide as the channel and covering nine patterns of spheres (see paper for a definition of the pattern of spheres). Each topographic dataset contains four structures:

- A time vector "T" identifying the sampling times at which the bed topography was measured (unit: h)

- A space vector "x" identifying the streamwise position of the spheres with the origin of the coordinate system positioned at the beginning of the measurement areas (upstream or downstream) - unit cm

- A space vector "y" identifying the transverse position of the spheres with the coordinate system centred in the middle of the channel and positively oriented towards the left side of the flume looking in streamwise direction - unit cm

- A matrix "Z" identifying the protrusion levels of the spheres (as defined in the paper) as a function of space and time (x times y times T) - unit cm

The PIV data were acquired during experiments 1b and 5b at the upstream location. The data are a collection of the velocity fields measured above the top of the spheres and over two pattern of spheres in the middle "m" and in the quarter plane "q" of the channel for three different time instants (t1, t2, t3) during the experiments. Each dataset contains 6 variables:

- the "sampling time" of the bursts - unit s

- the "acquisition time" of the PIV run during the experiments - unit h

- a vector "x" identifying the streamwise position of the velocity vectors for a coordinae system centred in the centre of the sphere and pointing in the longitudinal direction.

- a vector "z" identifying the vertical direction of the coordinate system with the origin at the top of the sphere and pointing upwards - unit cm

- a matrix "vx" containing 1000 fields of the streamwise velocity component - unit cm/s

- a matrix "vz" containing 1000 fields of the vertical velocity component - unit cm/s
