56th CIRP Conference on Manufacturing Systems, CIRP CMS '23, South Africa - Enhancing SLM Stainless Steel: Model-Based Parameter Optimization

SLM (selective laser melting) has faced challenges in ensuring consistent mechanical properties for various geometries in the past. However, the authors have developed a system that solves this issue by calculating the optimal process parameters for each scan vector on each layer. This approach ensures consistent melt pool geometry, derived from the most robust in conduction welding mode. The results from the single melt-line experiments and the presented thermal conduction solver demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in achieving a stable melt pool geometry in stainless steel (1.4404 or 316L). Furthermore, a rigorous testing regimen has been implemented to evaluate the system under different changing boundary conditions, to further demonstrate its usefulness. By utilizing this system, manufacturers will achieve consistent and high-quality mechanical properties for small lot sizes, including spare and obsolescent parts.

Data for: Improvements in the Land and Crop Modeling over Flooded Rice Fields by Incorporating the Shallow Paddy Water (Submitting to the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems)

We incorporated the shallow paddy surface water layer into the Noah-MP land surface model to improve its performance of surface heat fluxes over flooded rice paddies. Field measurements from two crop sites, i.e., SAITO (early rice) and SAGA (late rice), were used to initialize and evaluate the modified Noah-MP model (Maruyama, 2021). Additionally, we investigated the roles of some key parameters in the land and crop modeling.

Note that, all numerical experiments in this study were conducted at the field scale using the offline version of Noah-MP (Niu et al., 2011) running within the High-Resolution Land Data Assimilation System (HRLDAS v3.9; Chen et al., 2007). Please refer to the official HRLDAS/Noah-MP unified Github repository (https://github.com/NCAR/hrldas-release) for the original model codes.

The related model code modifications and model outputs were included in this dataset. Surface observations for the nearest AMeDAS or meteorological observatory stations were obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency website (https://www.jma.go.jp/jma/indexe.html), and were also provided in this dataset.

References

Chen, F., Manning, K. Code: Decarbonization Employment and Energy Systems (DEERS) Model

The Decarbonization Employment and Energy Systems (DEERS) model is a data-driven framework for estimating labor market pathways of large-scale, low-carbon energy-supply infrastructure development. The DEERS model is designed as a tool to inform regional and national workforce and infrastructure planning and policy-making in the U.S. The model simulates the distribution of labor effects over time and across economic sectors, resource sectors, occupations, and geography for multi-decadal energy-supply system transition scenarios. The model is used to estimate employment demand and wages, as well as experience, education, and training requirements, across domestic energy supply chains. We also incorporate time-variant factors, such as labor productivity and wage inflation, which are especially important in the context of emerging labor markets and long-term transitions. The DEERS model is adaptable to different energy system contexts and readily coupled with regional and downscaled macro-energy system modeling outputs. It can also be used to explore modifiable workforce and infrastructure planning and policy decisions, such as high road labor policies, siting domestic manufacturing facilities, creating just transition funds, and changing fossil fuel exports over time.

Modeling of pressure induced magnetic and magnetocaloric effects in dissipative magnetic shape memory alloy systems

This article presents a coupled magneto-thermo-mechanical model of pressure-dependent Magneto-caloric Effect (MCE) and magnetization responses for polycrystalline Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys (MSMA). Coupled constitutive equations are derived from a Helmholtz free energy function in a consistent thermodynamic way. The hysteretic and dissipative characteristics of phase transformations in MSMAs are captured by the internal state variables approach with their evolution equations. The model is calibrated and validated with the existing experimental data. The validated constitutive model is then exploited to predict MCEs at different pressures and magnetic field levels. Some predicted results are compared with the available experimental data.
