Maps of topsoil (0-30 cm) properties of Tuscany (Italy)
<p><span>The internal EJP SOIL project SERENA contributed to the evaluation of soil multifunctionality aiming at providing assessment tools for land planning and soil policies at different scales. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales.</span></p> <p><span>The topsoil (0-30 cm) properties maps are prepared to evaluate soil ecosystem services in SERENA/EJP-Soil and for applying SOC loss Cookbook and SOIL Loss Cookbook. In particular Soil Organic Carbon content map was directly considered as an application of SOC loss Cookbook (DOI: </span><a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13951265"><span>10.5281/zenodo.13951265 </span></a><span>Version 3).</span></p> <p><span>They are based on Tuscany Region soil database available at Geoscopio (https://www502.regione.toscana.it/geoscopio/pedologia.html) and on point soil data not freely available (Lamma Consortium). Selected properties and microstructure of concrete with tire rubber granulate as recycled material in construction industry
<p><span>The paper explores the use of recycled materials in the construction industry to promote sustainable development. There is a growing demand for recycling and innovative materials in engineering. The study specifically investigates the potential of tire rubber recyclate as a recycled raw material, comparing two different mixtures in an experimental program. These mixtures highlight the importance of utilizing local resources, aligning with the principles of the circular economy. The experimental program focuses on evaluation of mechanical properties in addition to specialized tests. Findings indicate that higher proportions of rubber granulate not only impact mechanical properties but also significantly affect durability when exposed to environmental factors. </span></p>
CrysAtom: Distributed Representation of Atoms for Crystal Property Prediction
<div> <div> <p>Application of artificial intelligence (AI) has been ubiquitous in the growth of research in the areas of basic sciences. Frequent use of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) based methodologies by researchers has resulted in significant advancements in the last decade. These techniques led to notable performance enhancements in different tasks such as protein structure prediction, drug-target binding affinity prediction, and molecular property prediction. In material science literature, it is well-known that crystalline materials exhibit topological structures. Such topological structures may be represented as graphs and utilization of graph neural network (GNN) based approaches could help encoding them into an augmented representation space. Primarily, such frameworks adopt supervised learning techniques targeted towards downstream property prediction tasks on the basis of electronic properties (formation energy, bandgap, total energy, etc.) and crystalline structures. Generally, such type of frameworks rely highly on the handcrafted atom feature representations along with the structural representations. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised framework namely, CrysAtom, using untagged crystal data to generate dense vector representation of atoms, which can be utilized in existing GNN-based property predictor models to accurately predict important properties of crystals. Empirical results show that our dense representation embeds chemical properties of atoms and enhance the performance of the baseline property predictor models significantly.</p> </div> </div>

Dataset: Inferring Inherent Optical Properties of Sea Ice Using 360-Degree Camera Radiance Measurements
<p>New types of compact 360-degree cameras have recently appeared on the consumer technology market. Some of these allow users to access raw imagery, offering sensor-level data that can be directly exploited for absolute light quantification. This paves the way for easy-to-use, inexpensive and accessible radiance cameras that can be operated in a wide range of natural environments. </p> <p>This dataset presents the angular radiance distributions measured with the Insta360 ONE 360-degree camera in sea ice. We report vertical profiles of the light field structure at two sites reprensentative of distinct sea ice types: High Arctic multi-year ice and Chaleur Bay (Quebec, Canada) landfast first-year ice. </p> <p>This repository contains the radiometric data stored in <strong>Hierarchical Data Format (HDF5, h5)</strong> under the following names: </p> <ul> <li><strong><a href="https://zenodo.org/api/records/14263256/draft/files/oden-08312018-imf-fluo.h5/content" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">oden-08312018-imf-fluo.h5</a></strong></li> <li><strong><a href="https://zenodo.org/api/records/14263256/draft/files/baiedeschaleurs-03232022-imf-fluo.h5/content" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">baiedeschaleurs-03232022-imf-fluo.h5</a></strong></li> </ul> <p>The High Arctic dataset (<strong>oden-08312018-imf-fluo.h5</strong>) contains only one station, while the Chaleur Bay (<strong>baiedeschaleurs-03232022-imf-fluo.h5</strong>) has four that can be accessed using these tags: "station_1", "station_2", "station_3", "station_4". The radiance measurements at each depth are reported as 2-dimensionals arrays with the azimuth directions (0-359°, 1° resolution) as columns and the zenith directions (0-180°, 1° resolution) as lines. Diversity of radial variations of wood properties in European beech reveals the plastic nature of juvenile wood - Dataset
<p>The long-term (as opposed to short-term intra-ring) radial variation of wood properties in European beech (<em>Fagus sylvatica</em> L.) from pith to bark are largest in the young ages of the tree (internal core). This so-called juvenility reflects both cambium ageing (ontogenetic juvenility) and adaptation to the changing mechanical constraints during secondary growth (adaptive juvenility). Ring width (<em>RW</em>), specific gravity (<em>SG</em>) and specific modulus (<em>SM</em>) are important parameters for each new wood layer, needed for the study of mechanical stability of a standing tree. They should be sensitive to the mechanical adaptation of growth.<strong> </strong>They were measured on diametrical boards (North/South direction) issued from 86 trees from several high forest stands in European countries. Analysis of variance showed very significant influence of position within the tree (core/external), of trees within a plot and of plots, but not for North/South orientation. The share of variance was similar for <em>SG</em> and <em>SM</em> (importance of tree effect) but different for <em>RW </em>(importance of plot effect). The occurrence of red heartwood in the core on some trees had a significant influence, mostly on <em>SM</em>, but the differences between white and red wood was very small. Globally the variability was high for <em>RW</em>, rather small for <em>SM</em> and very small for <em>SG</em>. Accordingly, the variations of the modulus of elasticity (product of <em>SG</em> and <em>SM</em>) were much more influenced by <em>SM</em> than by <em>SG</em> for beech. The radial variations of each parameter were fitted by both a linear (2 coefficients: zero value and mean slope) and a parabolic curve (3 coefficients: zero value, initial slope and curvature). They were used to classify types or radial profile in terms of flat, up & down and straight, convex & concave. Median values of coefficients per plot (or total) were used to draw median profiles for each parameter per plot and at the global level. The median global profiles differed from the typical radial pattern (TRP) of juvenility for plantation softwoods for <em>SG</em> (down concave instead of up concave) and <em>SM</em> (convex like TRP but with a clear decrease in the mature wood). The main result was the very large variability of profiles between trees or even between plots. Even if there is a part of ontogenetic influence in the juvenile patterns for <em>RW</em>, <em>SG</em> and <em>SM</em>, the results suggest that the influence of mechanical constraints on tree growth (adaptive juvenility) dominates largely. </p> <p><em>The provided file contains the data and the sheets developped to analyse them. It serves as supplementary material for the related paper submitted for recommendation to the PCI Forest and Wood Science.</em></p>

Synthesis and characterization of CsPbCl3 perovskite doped with Nd3+: structural, optical, and energy transfer properties
<div> <p>The purpose of this paper is to synthesize micrometric inorganic perovskite CsPbCl3:Nd3+ and investigate the impact of doping with rare earth ions on structural and optical properties, as well as energy transfer pathways between the host and dopant. Herein, we report the solid-state reaction synthesis of a concentration series of CsPbCl3:x%Nd3+ annealed in a nitrogen atmosphere. Additional doping of a material that already exhibits luminescence with an optically active ion increases its application potential. Structural features were determined using X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Morphology studies performed with scanning electron microscopy images revealed micrometric, well-separated cubic-like crystallites with a good distribution of individual elements. Surprisingly, a photoluminescence (PL) study showed that only the blue emission appears when the material is excited with a diode operating in the UV range. Apparently, the emission of Nd3+ ions can only be obtained with direct excitation of the lanthanide. The photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum monitored for Nd3+ emission confirmed the lack of energy transfer between the host and dopant. Possible explanations for this behavior have been put forth and substantiated by the first-principles electronic structure calculations in the framework of hybrid density functional theory.</p> </div>

(2021) "Chemical properties of key metabolites determine the global distribution of lichens".</p> <p>A detailed description of the individual files is provided in the "Schweiger-et-al-DataPublication-Index-Submissionfiles.txt" file.</p> <p>Summary of the study:</p> <p>In lichen symbioses, fungal secondary metabolites provide UV protection on which certain lichen algae such as trebouxioid green algae sensitively depend. These metabolites differ in their UV absorbance capability and solvability, and thus vary in their propensity of being leached from the lichen body by high precipitation and temperatures, with still unknown implications for the global distribution of lichens. In this global study, we show that the occurrence and chemical properties of fungal-derived metabolites are of eco-evolutionary significance for the global, latitudinal distribution of lichenized Trebouxiophyceae. This might represent an indirect environmental adaptation in which the mycobiont invests to protect the trebouxioid photobiont from harsh environmental conditions and, by doing this, secures its efficient source of photosynthetic carbon.</p>
Utilizing cosmic-ray positron and electron observations to probe the averaged properties of Milky Way pulsars
<p>We include here the Milky Way pulsars simulations that were created and used in "Utilizing cosmic-ray positron and electron observations to probe the averaged properties of Milky Way pulsars" of Cholis & Krommydas 2021. We include both the simulations before fitting to the cosmic-ray observations and the simulations whose electron and positron fluxes have been fitted to the AMS, CALET and DAMPE observations.
