Dissolved organic matter characterization for seasonal synoptic sampling of 100 urban streams in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA) from 2023-2024

This dataset contains dissolved organic matter (DOC) characteristics from surface water samples collected at 100 urban stream locations in the greater Salt Lake City, Utah metropolitan area. Samples were collected four times (July 2023, October 2023, January 2024, and May 2024) to capture spatial and seasonal variation in DOC concentrations. Fluorescent optical properties were measured on filtered water samples to understand the chemical composition of dissolved organic matter. Excitation-Emission Matrices (EEMs) were measured using a Horiba Aqualog spectrometer. DOM characteristics were quantified using both standard fluorescence and absorbance metrics as well as through parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. These data were collected as part of the Carbon in Urban Rivers Biogeochemistry (CURB) Project. This dataset contains field measurements taken during water sampling from 93 first- to fifth-order streams in the Altamaha, Chattahoochee, and Flint Watersheds draining a gradient of urban land use in the greater Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area. Field collection took place during four synoptic sampling events(September 2021, December 2021, March 2022, and July 2022) to capture spatial and seasonal variation in stream conditions (specific conductivity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ORP). Filtered stream samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon concentration and characteristics, available in separate datasets. Chlorophyll data from experiments testing for nitrogen, phosphorus, and thiamine limitation of phytoplankton in 39 Ohio lakes of varying trophic status during the growing seasons (April – October) of 2008–2009

Although nitrogen and phosphorus deficiency of algal blooms have been the focus of substantial attention, organic nutrients can limit algal growth in aquatic systems. Growing evidence indicates thiamine (vitamin B1) can influence the community of primary producers in marine systems, but comparatively little is known about the effect of thiamine on freshwater algal productivity. We conducted 106 nutrient deficiency experiments with water from 39 Ohio lakes of varying trophic status during the growing seasons (April – October) of 2008–2009. Specifically, we tested the response of phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll a, chl-a) relative to controls to added nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), thiamine (Th), or combinations of N+P and N+P+Th in integrated surface water collected from the inflow and outflow of each lake. The data presented here show the average chl-a of two replicate samples of each treatment (control, N, P, Th, N+P, N+P+Th), ratio of treatment/control response, and growth response ratio as ln(treatment chl-a/control chl-a). Each entry also includes lake surface water pH at time of collection and the initial chl-a concentration at time of experiment start.

This data product supports the manuscript "Seasons and seasonality in lakes: a synthesis amid global change" (Lewis et al. 2026; in review). Data were analyzed to understand how seasonality varies among diverse lakes and variables. Specifically, this data publication includes daily mean water temperature, chlorophyll-a, and dissolved oxygen at multiple depths, ice cover (binary), air temperature and solar radiation. Data availability and collection methods differ among lakes, as described in the Methods.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Data set contains seasonal summaries (spring and autumn) of the number of individuals of each species of small mammal captured (relative abundance) on each grassland trapline. Each record contains year, season, trapline and number of individuals captured of each species. These live trap records are based on daily captures during two 4-day trapping periods in spring (late February to early April) and autumn (early October to mid-November) for each of 14 permanent traplines established on seven fire-grazing treatments (two traplines per treatment). These seven fire-grazing treatments include three sites that are grazed by bison (1 unburned, 1 annual burn and 1 4-year burn) and four sites that are not grazed by bison (1 unburned, 1 annual burn and 2 4-year burn).

Native seedlings recorded on field plots with and without invasive buffel grass during the monsoon season of 2013 near Tucson, Arizona, USA

Although buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) invasions on several continents have significant ecological impacts, little information is available on its effect on seedling emergence and establishment of native vegetation. In highly impacted areas of the Sonoran Desert of North America, perennial plants are particularly vulnerable during their seedling stage. We studied the impact of buffel grass on the emergence and early survival of native seedlings in a field experiment. We marked out 2m x 2m field plots at three locations near Tucson, Arizona, with and without buffel grass. We removed the buffel grass from half of those with the invasion, and censused and marked native perennial seedlings that emerged in each plot for ten weeks during July-September (monsoon season) of 2013. Emergence and survival of native perennials in the field were both significantly higher where mature buffel grass was removed or had never invaded than where it remained. Our results highlight the need for more manipulative studies of density to improve mechanistic understanding of population dynamics, and to forecast how populations and communities will respond in the long term to perturbations such as invasion.

Meteorological data collected on Toolik Lake during the ice free season since 1989 to 2009, Arctic LTER, Toolik Research Station, Alaska.

Yearly file describing the metological conditions on Toolik Lake (named the Toolik Lake Climate station), adjacent to the Toolik Field Research Station (68 38'N, 149 36'W). This is a floating climate station and should not be confused with the Toolik Field Station Climate site (TFS Climate Station or Met Station) which is a terrestrial station (located on land). Note that this land station has been called the "Toolik Main Climate Station", and the station on the lake is located where the main lake sampling site is located so it has also been called the Toolik Lake Main Climate Station. Measurements include air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and radiation.

Anatuvuk River fire scar thaw depth measurements during the 2008 to 2014 growing season

The Anaktuvuk River Fire occurred in 2007 on the North Slope of Alaska. In 2008, three eddy covariance towers were established at sites represent ing unburned tundra, moderately burned tundra, and severely burned tundra. Several times during the 2008-2014 growing seasons, thaw depth was measured at approximately 70 points near each of these towers . Data presented here are the individual measurements for each site and date.

Reflectance spectra of vegetation near Imnavait Creek, AK from the 2008-2010 growing seasons.

A spectrophotometer was used to scan the canopy vegetation at four sites near Imnavait Creek each year from 2008 - 2010 by Toolik Lake LTER, Alaska. Reflectance spectra from 310-1130 nm are presented here with information relating the date and site of the scan.

Growing Season D and 18O isotope data for a core from the center and moat of the BBC collapse scar: Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest Flood Plains

This data set contains D and 18O data for a core from the center and moat (0 and 6 m) of the BBC collapse scar. Two well-preserved cores from the center of the bog was collected in March 2003 with a gasoline-powered permafrost corer. Cores were stored frozen and sampled using a radial saw. The core was sampled every two cm for macrofossil, diatom analysis and chemistry. Oxygen isotope ratios in aquatic cellulose has been shown to be a reliable tracer of lakewater isotope ratios (Sauer et al., 2001). I predicted that ?D and ?18O signatures in Sphagnum leaves would respond to enrichment and depletion in the bog water over time, providing an independent line of evidence for diatom-inferred hydrologic change. All isotope samples were processed by the Alaska Stable Isotope Facility using a Thermo Finnigan TC EA and Deltaplus XL mass spectrometer (Thermo Electron Corporation, Bremen, Germany) in continuous flow mode. Data were reported relative to standard mean ocean water (SMOW). Instrument precision was 1.2 ? SE for ?D and 0.3 ? SE for ?18O. I separated Sphagnum leaves from the bog and moat cores, and ran whole organic matter samples for ?D and ?18O stable isotopes. To determine the correlation between ?D and ?18O stable isotopes in peat leaves and bog water, I analyzed samples of Sphagnum and adjacent surface water. I collected surface water samples without headspace and refrigerated at 4 ?C until sample analysis. Snow samples were kept frozen until analysis. I refrigerated surface sample Sphagnum leaves from branches directly below the capitulum after harvest until analysis for ?D and ?18O stable isotopes. I identified Sphagnum samples to species. This data set was collected to relate ?D and ?18O to fires, changes in succession, changes in hydrology, and diatom assemblages.

Seasonal patterns of nitrogen fixation by Alnus tenuifolia within successional floodplain forests of the Bonaza Creek Experimantal Forest: 1992

Nitrogenase activity was measured by acetylene reduction (Stewart et al. 1967) and denitrification activity was measured by the acetylene inhibition technique (Tiedje 1982). Both processes were measured simultaneously on the same alder root/nodule sample and on bulk soil samples that served as controls. We sampled all sites in the 1992 growing season; during 7-9 July, 10-14 August, and 6-11 September.

This dataset contains ecosystem respiration data measured biweekly at the Alaska Peatland Experiment (APEX) gradient plots. Five plots encompass the gradient all changing in dominant vegetation type. Plot labels are as follows: BS (Black Spruce), WB (Shrub), TG (Grass), EC (Sedge/forb), Control (Rich fen). Data set also includes environmental data (soil temperature, soil moisture, seasonal thaw depth, water table depth) taken at the same time as each flux.

NDVI is also of high interest to investigate the potential distribution of plant and animal species and to investigate the effect of climate change on vegetation productivity.
