The impact of deep space radiation on cognitive performance: From biological sex to biomarkers to countermeasures (Elevated Plus Maze, Novel Object Recognition, Open Field, Radial Arm Water Maze, and Three Chamber Social Isolation/Interaction)
In the coming decade, astronauts will travel back to the moon in preparation for future Mars missions. Exposure to galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) is a major obstacle for deep space travel. Using multivariate principal components analysis, we found sex dimorphic responses in mice exposed to accelerated charged particles to simulate GCR (GCRsim); males displayed impaired spatial learning, whereas females did not. Mechanistically, these GCRsim induced learning impairments corresponded with chronic microglia activation and synaptic alterations in the hippocampus. Temporary microglia depletion shortly after GCRsim exposure mitigated GCRsim induced deficits measured months after the radiation exposure. Furthermore, blood monocyte levels measured early after GCRsim exposure were predictive of the late learning deficits and microglia activation measured in the male mice. Our findings (i) advance our understanding of charged particle induced cognitive challenges, (ii) provide evidence for early peripheral biomarkers for identifying late cognitive deficits, and (iii) offer potential therapeutic strategies for mitigating GCR induced cognitive loss. This study derives results from the behavior assays Elevated Plus Maze, Novel Object Recognition, Open Field, Radial Arm Water Maze, and Three Chamber Social Isolation/Interaction. Functional segregation of the human cerebellum in social cognitive tasks revealed by TMS
<p><strong>Introduction</strong>. This database includes the raw data linked with the paper “Functional segregation of the human cerebellum in social cognitive tasks revealed by TMS”. In this paper, we reported healthy participants’ mean accuracy rates and reaction times (RTs) during an emotion discrimination task (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2), an evaluation of situated emotion task (Experiment 3) and emotion recognition task (Experiment 4). The present study aimed at investigating the contribution of different regions of the (posterior) cerebellum to the comprehension of others’ emotions.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>. In four experiments, we used Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to interfere with the activity of two posterior cerebellar sectors, namely a paravermal and lateral cerebellar regions (and over the vertex as control site), while healthy participants performed an emotion discrimination task (N=24, Experiment 1; N=22, Experiment 2), an evaluation of situated emotion task (N=27, Experiment 3) and an emotion recognition task (N=20, Experiment 4).</p> <p><strong>Results (in brief).</strong> Our data showed that interfering via TMS with the activity of the medial posterior cerebellum affected basic emotion recognition in a two-alternative force-choice task, although this effect was restricted to negative stimuli (i.e., classification of fearful faces and scenarios). In turn, TMS over both the medial and lateral posterior cerebellum affected performance in a same-different discrimination task, requiring indicating whether two faces expressed the same or a different (ambiguous) emotion (anger/happiness or fear/happiness). Finally, only TMS over the lateral posterior cerebellum affected performance in a task requiring a higher-level social inference and in which participants had to recognize an (ambiguous) facial emotion as expressing happiness or fear considering the context in which it was experienced, with this effect being again only evident for fearful faces.</p> <p> </p>
Social cognition in Chronic Migraine with Medication Overuse: Do you mind what I think?
<p>This is the processed data for the manuscript “Bottiroli S, Rosi A, Sances G, Allena M, De Icco R, Lecce S, Vecchi T, Tassorelli C, Cavallini E. Social cognition in Chronic Migraine with Medication Overuse: Do you mind what I think?. To be submitted to JAMA Network Open”. </p> <p>Dataset refers to a study aimed to outline the socio-cognitive profile of patients with Chronic Migraine with Medication Overuse (CM+MO). Given the multidimensionality of the socio-cognitive construct, we considered: (1) socio-cognitive abilities, (2) socio-cognitive beliefs, (3) alexithymia and autism traits, and (4) social relationships. Two hundred and twelve subjects were enrolled, of which 71 suffered from CM+MO, 61 from episodic migraine (EM), and 80 were healthy controls (HC). All participants were assessed with a comprehensive socio-cognitive battery that included: (1) the Faux pas test (FP), the Strange Stories task (SS), the Reading Mind in the Eyes test (RMET), (2) the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale, (3) the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, (4) the Lubben Social Network Scale – Revised and the Friendship Scale. Data showed that CM+MO: (1) performed similar to EM but worse than HC in the FP and SS tests, while they were worse than the other two groups in the RMET; (2) were similar to EM and HC in terms of social intelligence; (3) had more alexithymic and autistic traits than EM and HC; and (4) reported higher levels of contact with their family members but felt little support from the people around them than HC. These results suggest that CM+MO patients are characterized by a profile of compromised socio-cognitive abilities that affects different dimensions.</p>
