Switzerland - Sheep Hut in Vals
These huts dot the sides of the Vals valley, used by shepherds as shelter for the livestock while they're grazing, avoiding the need to take the animals down from the mountain slopes. My first attempt at fusing phone camera (Pixel 2 XL) and drone camera (DJI Mavic Air) photos to achieve a scan with both fine-grained and large-scale detail. The setting sun made this one a little difficult - the phone struggled to cope with the high contrast ratio and many of the photos needed to be stitched together by hand. Montcherand, Vaud (Switzerland) - Apse
Ancient cluniac priory of St. Stephen. The church stands at the crossing of 3 roads of pilgrimage (St. James Way, Via Francígena & Great Itinerary of Cluniac Sites). One possibility is that the first mural may have been painted (early 12th) century by a pilgrim traveling his way to Compostela. Early in 1536 the Calvinist movement of the Reformation and the Bernese occupation of the region dictated that all murals in catholic churches be whitewasehd and it's thanks to this process that this mural has been preserved. Is the oldest example in French speaking Switzerland of the representation of human figures in religious art. In 1902, the fresco is discovered quite by chance, when trace of blue paint emerges under the whitewhasch.  Two more restorations was necessary (1979 and 1991) until this day. Cup-marked stone, Zermatt-Hubelwäng, Switzerland
Cup-marked stone in the Matter valley near Zermatt, Switzerland (for a map see http://goo.gl/LbrI1i). Recorded in April 2016. The flat quartzite slab ist situated next to the hiking trail from Herbrigg to Zmutt at around 2000 m ASL with a panoramic view including the Matterhorn. Measuring ca. 4.8 x 3 m, the stone shows prehistoric cup marks and symbolic petroglyphs as well as modern initials and the date 1762. PCPI-S and PCPI-C French version Switzerland
<p><span>Person-centred care is associated with improved clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, work environment factors and economic outcomes. </span>Although measures could improve understanding of the benefits of person-centred practice and support its implementation, few validated instruments are available to date. Limtations of available instrument include the lack of clarification of theory-based concepts, scales that do not refer to an existing theoretical framework and that do not assess all aspects of person-centred care. Existing scales are mainly developed in English and used in English healthcare systems and may not be adapted to healthcare contexts in other countries. Prof. McCormack and Prof. McCance developed and tested the Person-centred Practice Inventory-Staff (PCPI-S) and the Person-centred Practice Inventory-Care (PCPI-C) based on the Person-centred Practice Framework (PCPF) to measure professionals' and patients' perception of person-centred practice.</p> <p>The PCPI-S and the PCPI-S were translated in French and psychometrically tested in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. </p> <p> </p> <p><span> </span></p>

Stable Water Isotopes in Fresh Snow Along 2 Slopes in the canton of Grisons/Graubünden, Switzerland: the "Chruez", Praettigau and Eastward ascent to the Vilan Peak
<p>This bachelor thesis concerned itself with the composition of <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>2H (or deuterium), <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O and <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>17O in fresh snow. Stable water isotopes have been proven to be useful tracers for hydrological processes, such as air mass sources of regional precipitation or the residence time of snowmelt in a catchment (Beria et al., 2018). Whereas different isotopic compositions of precipitation in the form of rain is well documented for different environments in networks such as the NISOT (The Swiss National Network for the Observation of Isotopes in the Water Cycle), the same knowledge about snow is more limited due to the influences of different isotope fractionation processes and lack of onsite snow accumulation and melt observation (Cooper, 1998; Michelon et al., 2018). The aim of this thesis was therefore to analyse and characterize the spatial variability of <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>2H, <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O and <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>17O in freshly fallen snow. This was done by sampling fresh snow on six different snowfall events in the month of March over an elevation gradient of 1000m along the southside slope of the mountain Chruez. 2H throughout four sampling days had <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>-values ranging from −50‰ to −70‰, with two days being more depleted in 2H, showing <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>-values from −80‰ down to −160‰. <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O showed the same pattern where of six, four days showed similar -values ranging from −8‰ to −12‰ and two days with a stronger depletion of the isotope with <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>-values ranging from −14‰ to −20‰. It is known that the enrichment of <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>17O in a water molecule is about half of <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O, which was also seen in the results of this thesis (Nyamgerel et.al, 2021).</p> <p>In this thesis, two out of six sampling days were examined with statistically significant positive altitude gradients of 0.19‰/100m and 0.64‰/100m for <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O. Additionally, on one of the six sampling days, a statistically significant negative altitude gradient of −0.15‰/100m was observed. The altitude gradients for <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>17O were about half of <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O. Two statistically significant positive and one negative altitude gradients for <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>2H were observed during the same days with lapse rates of 1.7‰/100m, 5.5‰/100m and −1.25‰/100m. Having both positive and negative altitude gradients was attributed to the varying amounts of solar radiation and wind direction during different sampling days. However, further research must be done in order to make a valid statement, since additional factors such as water vapor pressure, turbulent fluxes in the air and relative humidity strongly affect fractionation of stable water isotopes.</p> <p>The aim of this work is to characterize and analyze the elevation effect of water isotopologues in fresh snow at Vilan. By analyzing fresh snow, the influence of fractionation processes, after the precipitation event can be minimized and helps the understanding of snow-melt water transformation. For this purpose, a total of five fresh snow events in March and April 2021 were analyzed. Samples were taken from the eastern slope of Vilan between 1100 m a.s.l. and 2300 m a.s.l. and were collected at 100-meter elevation intervals. The altitude effect was determined with a linear regression. The analysis shows that the altitude has only a small effect on the d-values of the new snow, because for the <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O only one snow event shows a statistically significant altitude effect. For the <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>2H, it is their two. The statistically significant new snow events show an elevation gradient of + 0.155 ‰ <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>18O/100 m and + 1.211 ‰ <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>2H/100 m and + 0.677 ‰ <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span>2H/100 m, respectively. The observed positive gradients can be explained by four effects. First, a lee effect is likely due to the prevailing weather conditions. Second, the top snow layer accumulates heavy isotopologues with increasing time (time effect). Third, an inverse height effect can be observed when water vapor of different origins mixes. Fourth, the amount of precipitation (quantity effect) can have an impact on isotopic composition. The work shows that further research in the analysis of water isotopes in fresh snow is necessary to better identify and quantify possible influencing parameters.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

<p><span>The high mountain ranges of western Europe had a profound effect on the biotic recolonisation of Europe from glacial refugia. The Alps present a particularly interesting case because they form an absolute barrier to dispersal for most taxa, obstructing recolonisation from multiple refugia in northern Italy. Here we investigate the effect of the European Alps on the phylogeographic history of the European common frog <i>Rana temporaria</i>. Based on partial <i>cytochrome b </i>and <i>COXI </i>sequences from Switzerland, we find two mitochondrial lineages roughly north and south of the alpine ridge, with contact zones between them in eastern and western Switzerland. The northern haplogroup falls within the previously identified western European haplogroup, while the southern haplogroup is unique to Switzerland. We find that the lineages diverged ~110 kya, at approximately the onset of the last glacial glaciation; this indicates that they are from different glacial refugia. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that the northern and southern haplogroups colonised Switzerland via trans- and circum-alpine routes from at least two separate refugia in northern Italy. Our results illustrate how a complex recolonisation history of the central European Alps can arise from the semi-permeable barrier created by high mountains.</span></p>

Sampling rate is 1000 samples per second, and the natural frequency of the instrument is around 8 Hz. An STA/LTA filter has been applied to remove records with prominent icequakes in them, although many smaller icequakes remain in the records.</p> <p>Waveform files are named after their event origin time in format 7{MDhms}. For example, waveform "70614004000.sac" occurred on June 14 00:40:00, 2007.<br> </p>
Phenotypic changes of beak dimensions in urban birds of Switzerland
<p><span>Humans' </span><span>large influence on the environment </span><span>has constructed many new ecological niches, such </span><span>as in urban areas</span><span>. </span><span>Phenotypic changes, including morphological ones related to human influence are known from a small number of bird species. </span><span>The amount of change in a given time period, i.e., the rate of change, may vary. Rates of change (both evolutionary and through phenotypic plasticity) are reportedly rapid in human-influenced settings, although this is disputed. We present new data on changes in beak dimensions and rates of change over historical time periods in four urban bird species (Common Chaffinch, European Greenfinch, Eurasian Blackbird, House Sparrow) from three Swiss cities (Basel, Bern, Geneva). </span><span>Our study shows that beak dimensions have changed little in most investigated urban bird populations over the past century. Only in Genevan Blackbirds there was evidence for an increase in beak length over the past 65 years; Bernese Chaffinches appear to be trending toward a decrease in beak width over the past 55 years. Rates of change in our sample in comparison with literature records showed that compared to populations less influenced by humans, urban evolutionary rates appear to be similar. Although in accordance with previous findings about other urban bird species, our study exemplifies the difficulty to find universal patterns in tempo and mode of phenotypic evolution in urban areas, even when considering the same taxa. Our data contribute to the expanding field of urban evolutionary biology, which is particularly important regarding the growing urban habitats worldwide.</span></p>
