Interagency Ecological Program: Discrete water quality monitoring in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay-Delta, collected by the Environmental Monitoring Program, 1975-2023

\<markdown\> The Interagency Ecological Program’s (IEP) Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) was initiated in compliance with the Water Right Decision D-1379 (now mandated by Water Right Decision D-1641) and has monitored discrete water quality and nutrients in the upper San Francisco Estuary since 1975. The objectives of the EMP are to obtain consistent and accurate monthly data at established monitoring stations, provide and document information necessary to achieve compliance with salinity, flow, and dissolved oxygen standards, and to report this information for the purpose of management and conservation of the upper San Francisco Estuary. While the EMP also collects biological data, this dataset only includes the discrete water quality and nutrient data collected by the EMP from 1975-2021. Links to other EMP datasets can be found [here](https://emp-des.github.io/emp-reports/data-links.html) \</markdown\>

Long-term monitoring of peatlands located near oil sands mining activities surrounding Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada (2009-Present)

Oil sands mining activities in the Fort McMurray region of Alberta, Canada, have led to increased atmospherically deposited nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S), with N steadily increasing over time and S peaking in 2009, then decreasing with the installation of scrubbers on upgrader stacks. Ecosystems (such as ombrotrophic bogs) near these mining activities see an increase to their depositional load. These peatlands are isolated from groundwater and receive inputs only from precipitation, making them uniquely susceptible to changing depositional scenarios. To evaluate the effect of oil sands development on bogs in this area, since 2009, we have collected and analyzed porewater (pH, conductivity, NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, SO 4 2- -S, and total dissolved N), N and S as represented in extractions of ion exchange resin precipitation collectors (NH 4 + -N, NO 3 - -N, SO 4 2- -S), samples of new growth from the most dominant plant species (C, N, and S, with Ca, Mg, K, and P analyzed in later years), and have recorded annual growth of vegetation. For a majority of the years, we have sampled at least 3 times (June, July, and August). Some sites have burned and have been replaced by others, however, collections are on-going and data from these collections are uploaded as they are published.

Salmonid habitat use monitoring used to determine effectiveness of habitat improvement projects in the Sacramento River, CA

Overview The Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) funds habitat improvement work in the Central Valley of California to increase salmonid populations in furtherance of meeting CVPIA fish doubling goals. This data package contains five datasets. Enclosure Study – Growth Data This dataset covers enclosure studies that examined salmonid growth rates in the Sacramento River and focused on assessing effectiveness of salmonid habitat improvement projects. Data was collected in July and August 2019 from project sites, constructed habitat project sites, and control sites where no treatment is planned. Six enclosures with juvenile Fall Run Chinook salmon from Coleman National Fish Hatchery were placed in each habitat type. Fish growth was tracked for approximately 6.5 weeks. Annual reports summarize the survey findings. Enclosure Study – Gut Contents Data This dataset covers enclosure studies that examined salmonid growth rates in the Sacramento River and focused on assessing effectiveness of salmonid habitat improvement projects. Data was collected in July and August 2019 from project sites, constructed habitat project sites, and control sites where no treatment is planned. Six enclosures with juvenile Fall Run Chinook salmon from Coleman National Fish Hatchery were placed in each habitat type. Enclosures remained in the river for approximately 6.5 weeks. At the end of the study, fish were euthanized, and we dissected their guts and enumerated the taxa found. Annual reports summarize the survey findings. Microhabitat Use Data This dataset covers salmonid microhabitat use conducted in the Sacramento River and focused on assessing effectiveness of salmonid habitat improvement projects. Surveys are conducted roughly monthly and include pre-project sites, constructed habitat project sites, and control sites where no treatment is planned. Based upon habitat inventory data, annually identify which habitat units within each side channel will be selected for the collectio

Harmful algal bloom monitoring data near Frenchman Bay from 2004-2022

The Community Environmental Health Lab at the MDI Biological Laboratories has monitored phytoplankton and water quality in Frenchman Bay for the past few decades. Our goal was to understand how climate change and local changes in anthropogenic activity, including cruise ship activity, have altered the water quality and phytoplankton dynamics in the bay. This data provides information on target harmful algae bloom species as well as a few measures of phytoplankton biodiversity. Our data were collected by a variety of field technicians and citizen scientists who perform weekly sampling throughout the year at Bar Harbor town pier and during the summer months at the MDIBL pier and cruise ship anchorages.

Interagency Ecological Program: Monitoring of water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton, clams, and Delta Smelt to support the Summer-Fall Suisun Marsh Salinity Control Gates Action 2018-2024

The Suisun Marsh Salinity Control Gates (SMSCG) have the potential to increase low-salinity-zone habitat for endangered Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus, California Endangered Species Act listed as Endangered, Federal Endangered Species Act listed as Threatened), and to allow them to more frequently occupy Suisun Marsh, especially Montezuma Slough, one of their most important rearing habitats. Operation of the SMSCG in summer and fall to improve Delta Smelt habitat are called for in the Biological Opinion and Incidental Take permit for the Central Valley Project and State Water Project. To support the adaptive management of the action, the California Department of Water Resources and collaborating agencies monitored water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton, clams, and fishes during the SMSCG management actions in 2018. Monitoring has continued during the summer and fall months of all subsequent years, including both those with and without actions. This data package includes data collected by the Interagency Ecological Program’s (IEP) long-term monitoring programs supplemented with targeted sample collection where existing surveys lacked spatial or temporal coverage. Monitoring during no-action years will be used as a baseline for comparison during action years. This data package will be updated annually.

2017 seasonal high frequency monitoring of Upper Clark Fork River (Montana, USA) dissolved carbon dioxide, pH, and electrical conductivity

These data were collected by the University of Montana and Montana State University to support the Upper Clark Fork River restoration monitoring project supported by the US NSF Long Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) program. The original analytical intent for these data was to assess the response of river metabolic regime to the floodplain restoration via inference of whole-ecosystem metabolism from the daily variation in carbon dioxide concentrations. Data are primarily measurements of dissolved carbon dioxide, pH, electrical conductivity, and temperature in well-mixed river thalweg water. Additional miscellaneous data were collected for quality control. Data are from late in the 2017 field season. Data were collected on the Upper Clark Fork River (USGS HUC 17010201) at the Galen and Racetrack sites northeast of Anaconda, Montana, USA. High frequency carbon dioxide and pH data were collected using field deployments SAMI sensors from Sunburst Sensors (Missoula, Montana, USA). Electrical conductivity data was collected with a HOBO sensor from Onset Computer Corporation (Bourne, Massachusetts, USA).
