<p>We examined whether warming, acidification, and different food availability regimes interacted to affect the survival, development, and growth of larval crown-of-thorns starfish, <em>Acanthaster</em> sp. (CoTS). Larvae were reared in all combinations of two temperatures (26, 30 °C), two pH levels (pH 8.0, 7.6), and three food regimes <span>('low' ration: 1,000 cells mL<sup>-1</sup>; 'switch' ration: 1,000 cells mL<sup>-1</sup> until day 11, followed by 50,000 cells mL<sup>-1</sup>; and 'high' ration: 50 000 cells mL<sup>-1</sup>). </span></p>

RECCAP2-ocean data collection

<p>This repository contains data sets that were submitted to and analysed in the ocean branch of phase two of the REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes (RECCAP2-ocean) project.</p> <p>Protocols defining the criteria for data set submissions to RECCAP2-ocean are available through the project website:<br> https://reccap2-ocean.github.io/protocols/</p> <p>A detailed description of the submitted data sets is provided in three files contained in the supplementary.tar file. These are:</p> <ul> <li>An overview table of all regularly submitted data sets including contact details for each submission is provided in RECCAP2-ocean_data_products_overview.xlsx.</li> <li>The documentation of a quality control exercise is provided in QC_results_RECCAP2-ocean.pdf. All regular data sets have been quality controlled (i.e. checked for consistency with the submission protocol and general plausibility of results) by the participants of RECCAP2 (i.e. the users of the data sets).</li> <li>A documentation of remaining data set issues that were identified after the initial quality control is provided in Remaining_data_set_issues.pdf. Data from: Jeju Island: a sentinel for tracking ocean warming impacts on high-latitude benthic communities

<p>As climate changes and anthropogenic pressures increase, marine ecosystem assembly and functioning are altered. High-latitude areas may provide opportunities for some tropical and subtropical organisms to survive. Yet, it is difficult to assess ongoing changes as ecological baselines are often missing. Here, we focus on the rapidly warming region of Jeju Island (South Korea), where thermal changes may have already triggered a poleward expansion of tropical and subtropical taxa and changes in community assembly. In 2012–2014, an island-wide quantitative description of its benthic communities (5 m and 15 m depths) was made, whereas patterns in seawater temperatures were examined from 1981 to 2020. The Jeju Island algal assemblage was dominated by the regionally endemic kelp, <em>Ecklonia</em> <em>cava</em>. Turf, encrusting coralline algae, alongside tropical, subtropical, and cosmopolitan macro-algae were also major components of the benthic community. Hermatypic coral cover was higher at the 15 m depth than 5 m depth. Increases in seawater temperatures were highly significant, with differences between the average annual SST [1980–2020] and annual SST reaching up to + 1.61 °C in only 40 yr. The thermal rise was more pronounced in winter than summer, and warming was further accompanied by a major decline in the number of days below 14 °C and 18 °C, which are considered critical thermal thresholds for hermatypic coral survival and reef development, respectively. Warming winter seawater temperatures could ultimately lead to a loss of seasonality and profound modifications of benthic assemblages. This study provides the necessary assessment of benthic community conditions at Jeju Island upon which the ongoing changes in the area can be explicitly demonstrated.</p>

Data for: Low mercury concentration in a Greenland glacial fjord attributed to oceanic sources

<p>Total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations measured in southeast Greenland between 10 August and 20 August 2021. The majority of samples were collected in Sermilik Fjord and&nbsp;on the continental shelf to the west of the fjord mouth&nbsp; (identified by CTD cast number; see below for corresponding data citation).&nbsp;A small number of samples were collected by hand from surface waters&nbsp;in Apuseeq Fjord, in a lake and river near the village of Tiilerilaaq (formerly known as Tiniteqilaq), and in a river near Tasiilaq. All samples are identified by the date, time, and lat/lon of collection.</p> <p>For further details about the sample collection and analysis, please see the methods section of the associated publication.</p> <p>Sermilik Fjord and continental shelf&nbsp;CTD data are available via the NSF Arctic Data Center (doi:10.18739/A2HD7NT9K).</p>

To investigate how external forcing affects the stratification in mode water formation regions in the Southern Ocean, we conduct a set of adjoint sensitivity experiments. The objective function is the annual-average stratification over the mode water formation region, which is evaluated from potential temperature and salinity adjoint sensitivity experiments. The analysis of impacts, from the product of sensitivities and forcing variability, identifies the separate effects of the wind stress, heat flux, and freshwater flux, revealing that the dominant control on stratification is from surface heat fluxes, as well as a smaller effect from zonal wind stress. The adjoint sensitivities of stratification to surface heat flux reveal a surprising change in sign over 2 years lead time. Surface cooling leads to the expected initial local decrease in stratification. However, there is a delayed response to surface cooling leading to an increase in stratification. This delayed response in stratification involves atmospheric damping of the surface thermal contribution, so that eventually the oppositely-signed advective haline contribution dominates. This two-phase response of stratification is found to hold over mode water formation regions in the South Indian and Southeast Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean, where there are strong advective flows linked to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.</p>

Environmental drivers and distribution of cold-water corals in the global ocean - Environmental Data Layers

<p><strong>Publication Abstract</strong></p> <p>Species distribution models (SDMs) are useful tools for identifying the distribution of marine species in data limited environments. Outputs from SDMs have been used to identify areas for spatial management, analyzing trawl closures, quantitatively measuring the risk of bottom trawling, and evaluating protected areas for improving conservation management. Cold-water corals are globally distributed habitat forming organisms that are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and climate change, but data deficiency remains an ongoing issue for the effective spatial management of these important ecosystem engineers. In this study, we constructed 11 environmental seabed variables at 500m resolution based on the latest multi-depth global datasets and high-resolution bathymetry. Ensemble modeling methods were used to predict the global habitat suitability for ten widespread cold-water coral species, including six reef Scleractinian framework-forming species and four large gorgonian species. Temperature, depth, salinity, terrain ruggedness index, carbonate saturation state&nbsp;and chlorophyll were the most important factors in determining the global distributions of these species. The Scleractinian species <em>Madrepora oculata</em> showed the widest niche breadth, whilst most other species demonstrated somewhat limited niche breadth. The shallowest study species, <em>Oculina varicosa</em>, had the most distinctive niche of the group. The model outputs from this study represent the highest resolution global predictions for these species to date and are valuable in aiding the management, conservation and continued research into cold-water coral species.</p> <p><strong>Data description</strong></p> <p>These datasets (compressed Zip archives) contain the ten global environmental layers that were&nbsp;generated for the publication Tong et al., (2023) doi: 10.3389/fmars.2023.1217851, using a trilinear interpolation approach based on the 500m GEBCO bathymetric data product. These layers are representations of seafloor conditions.&nbsp;Please refer to the manuscript for methodological details. Data from: Ocean deoxygenation caused non-linear responses in the structure and functioning of benthic ecosystems

<p><span>The O<sub>2 </sub>content of the global ocean has been declining progressively over the past decades, mainly because of human activities and global warming. Nevertheless, how long-term deoxygenation affects macrobenthic communities, sediment biogeochemistry and their mutual feedback remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluate the response of the benthic assemblages and biogeochemical functioning to decreasing O<sub>2 </sub>concentrations along the persistent bottom-water dissolved O<sub>2</sub> gradient of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (QC, Canada). We report several of non-linear biodiversity and functional responses to decreasing O<sub>2</sub> concentrations, and identify an O<sub>2</sub> threshold that occurs at approximately at 63 µM. Below this threshold, macrobenthic community assemblages change, and bioturbation rates drastically decrease to near zero. Consequently, the sequence of electron acceptors used to metabolize the sedimentary organic matter is squeezed towards the sediment surface while reduced compounds accumulate closer (as much as 0.5 to 2.5 cm depending on the compound) to the sediment-water interface. Our results illustrate the capacity of bioturbating species to compensate for the biogeochemical consequences of hypoxia and can help to predict future changes in benthic ecosystems.</span></p>
