Dataset: Scoping the Open Science Infrastructure Landscape in Europe
<p>"We see a diverse, interconnected, open, professional and viable, developing OS ecosystem in Europe on solid ground; one that is worth investing in. At the same time, this developing ecosystem faces a range of issues that challenge its path to a more open and sustainable future." This is a core conclusion of a new SPARC Europe report; the work is a result of a recent in-depth survey of infrastructure and/or services that are part of the European Open Science infrastructure (OSI) landscape. This dataset supports that work. </p> <p>The dataset is licensed CC0.</p>
Sibship reconstruction with SNPs illuminates the scope of a cryptic invasion of Asian Swamp Eels (Monotperus albus) in Georgia, USA
<p>Cryptic invasive species are particularly problematic to study, manage, and control because of the difficulty detecting these species within their invaded habitats. Such is the case of the Asian Swamp Eel (<i>Monopterus albus</i>; ASE) where it is established in vegetated marshes along the Chattahoochee River, Georgia. Adult eels have been nearly impossible to detect or quantify with traditional sampling, although leaf-litter trapping of juvenile ASEs has been somewhat successful. In this study, we leveraged a collection of juveniles from the 2015 cohort and used single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to reconstruct sibship among these juveniles in COLONY. Sibship reconstruction allowed us to learn about adult breeding behaviors and provided the first quantified estimates of breeder abundance. Pedigree reconstruction revealed that adults of both sexes were polygamous and likely traveled up to 0.5 km among marsh habitats during a single breeding season. Estimates of the number of breeding adults contributing to offspring (<i>Ns</i>) and the effective number of breeders (<i>Nb</i>) indicated an approximate minimum bound of 100 breeding adults in the marshes in 2015. Our study updated the invasion status of a cryptic population formerly riddled with uncertainty, highlighting that low captures of adult eels in the study area have been the result of low detectability, not low abundance. Given that low detectability would likely hinder removal efforts, our results suggest that future efforts could focus on suppression of ASE abundance when they are most vulnerable to capture and containing the spatial extent of the invasion.</p>
Data from: National monitoring and evaluation of eHealth: a scoping review
Objective: There has been substantial growth in eHealth over the past decade, driven by expectations of improved healthcare system performance. Despite substantial eHealth investment, little is known about the monitoring and evaluation strategies for gauging progress in terms of eHealth availability and use. This scoping review aims to map the existing literature and depict the predominant approaches and methodological recommendations to national and regional monitoring and evaluation of eHealth availability and use in order to advance national strategies for monitoring and evaluating eHealth. Methods: Peer-reviewed and grey literature on monitoring and evaluation of eHealth availability and use, published between January 1st, 2009, to March 11th, 2019, were eligible for inclusion. 2,354 publications were identified, and 36 publications were included after full-text review. Data on publication type (e.g. empirical research), country, level (national or regional), publication year, method (e.g. survey), and domain (e.g., Provider-centric electronic record) was charted. Results: The majority of publications monitored availability alone or applied a combination of availability and use measures. Surveys were the most common data collection method (used in 86% of the publications). OECD, European Commission, Canada Health Infoway, and WHO have developed comprehensive eHealth monitoring and evaluation methodology recommendations. Discussion: Establishing continuous national eHealth monitoring and evaluation, based on international approaches and recommendations, could improve the ability for cross-country benchmarking and learning. This scoping review provides an overview of the predominant approaches and recommendations to national and regional monitoring and evaluating eHealth and thereby provides a starting point for developing national eHealth monitoring strategies.
The Molecular Diversity Scope of Oxindole Derivatives in Organic Synthesis
<p>The role of oxindole derivatives is discussed as starting materials in diverse organic reactions including two and more components between the years 2014 until 2020. Oxindoles are famous because of their biological properties for instance chromanone-fused polycyclic pyrrolidinyl-dispirooxindoles, functionalized polycyclic spiro-fused carbocyclicoxindole, and 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles have anti-cancer, anti-tumor, and anti-microbial properties, respectively. Therefore, various methods for synthesizing the oxindole structures have received more attention in organic chemistry.</p>

<p>This data set was used to calculate the energy budget and to calculate scope for growth for ecological engineers (intertidal mussels) comparing those that are affected by endolithic cyanobacterial parasites and clean intertidal mussels. It has data for growth, both whole body and shell biomineralization, and the reproductive potential of infested individuals. There is also data for components of scope for growth, feeding rates, ammonium exctretion, standard metabolic rates and lethal temperature measurements data.</p>
Data from: Immune-challenged fish up-regulate their metabolic scope to support locomotion
Energy-based trade-offs occur when investment in one fitness-related trait diverts energy away from other traits. The extent to which such trade-offs are shaped by limits on the rate of conversion of energy ingested in food (e.g. carbohydrates) into chemical energy (ATP) by oxidative metabolism rather than by the amount of food ingested in the first place is, however, unclear. Here we tested whether the ATP required for mounting an immune response will lead to a trade-off with ATP available for physical activity in mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). To this end, we challenged fish either with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from E. coli or with Sheep Red Blood Cells (SRBC), and measured oxygen consumption at rest and during swimming at maximum speed 24h, 48h and 7 days post-challenge in order to estimate metabolic rates. Relative to saline-injected controls, only LPS-injected fish showed a significantly greater resting metabolic rate two days post-challenge and significantly higher maximal metabolic rates two and seven days post-challenge. This resulted in a significantly greater metabolic scope two days post-challenge, with LPS-fish transiently overcompensating by increasing maximal ATP production more than would be required for swimming in the absence of an immune challenge. LPS-challenged fish therefore increased their production of ATP to compensate physiologically for the energetic requirements of immune functioning. This response would avoid ATP shortages and allow fish to engage in an aerobically-challenging activity (swimming) even when simultaneously mounting an immune response. Nevertheless, relative to controls, both LPS- and SRBC-fish displayed reduced body mass gain one week post-injection, and LPS-fish actually lost mass. The concomitant increase in metabolic scope and reduced body mass gain of LPS-challenged fish indicates that immune-associated trade-offs are not likely to be shaped by limited oxidative metabolic capacities, but may instead result from limitations in the acquisition, assimilation or efficient use of resources.

ExioML: Emission Factor Database for Scope 3 Emission Estimation Machine Learning Benchmarks
<h1>🙋‍♂️ Introduction</h1> <p>ExioML is the first ML-ready benchmark dataset in eco-economic research, designed for global sectoral sustainability analysis. It addresses significant research gaps by leveraging the high-quality, open-source EE-MRIO dataset ExioBase 3.8.2. ExioML covers 163 sectors across 49 regions from 1995 to 2022, overcoming data inaccessibility issues. The dataset includes both factor accounting in tabular format and footprint networks in graph structure.</p> <p>We demonstrate a GHG emission regression task using a factor accounting table, comparing the performance of shallow and deep models. The results show a low Mean Squared Error (MSE), quantifying sectoral GHG emissions in terms of value-added, employment, and energy consumption, validating the dataset's usability. The footprint network in ExioML, inherent in the multi-dimensional MRIO framework, enables tracking resource flow between international sectors.</p> <p>ExioML offers promising research opportunities, such as predicting embodied emissions through international trade, estimating regional sustainability transitions, and analyzing the topological changes in global trading networks over time. It reduces barriers and intensive data pre-processing for ML researchers, facilitates the integration of ML and eco-economic research, and provides new perspectives for sound climate policy and global sustainable development.</p> <h1>📊 Dataset</h1> <p>ExioML supports graph and tabular structure learning algorithms through the Footprint Network and Factor Accounting table. The dataset includes the following factors in PxP and IxI:</p> <p>- Region (Categorical feature)<br>- Sector (Categorical feature)<br>- Value Added [M.EUR] (Numerical feature)<br>- Employment [1000 p.] (Numerical feature)<br>- GHG emissions [kg CO2 eq.] (Numerical feature)<br>- Energy Carrier Net Total [TJ] (Numerical feature)<br>- Year (Numerical feature)</p> <h2>☁️ Factor Accounting</h2> <p>The Factor Accounting table shares common features with the Footprint Network and summarizes the total heterogeneous characteristics of various sectors.</p> <h2>🚞 Footprint Network</h2> <p>The Footprint Network models the high-dimensional global trading network, capturing its economic, social, and environmental impacts. This network is structured as a directed graph, where directionality represents sectoral input-output relationships, delineating sectors by their roles as sources (exporting) and targets (importing). The basic element in the ExioML Footprint Network is international trade across different sectors with features such as value-added, emission amount, and energy input. The Footprint Network helps identify critical sectors and paths for sustainability management and optimization. The Footprint Network is hosted on Zenodo.</p> <h1>🔗 Code and Data Availability</h1> <p>The ExioML development toolkit in Python and the regression model used for validation are available on the GitHub repository: (https://github.com/YVNMINC/ExioML).
