Atmospheric forcing and OGCM conditions for the year 2019 over the South China Sea
<p>The atmospheric forcing (<a href="13253327" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">atmospheric_ECMWF_forcing.tar</a>) comes from the 3-hourly output of the ECMWF 1/8<sup>o</sup> atmospheric analysis.</p> <p>Initial ocean conditions and lateral ocean boundary conditions are prescribed from the daily outputs of the global ocean 1/12<sup>o</sup> analysis PSY4QV3R1 from the Copernicus Marine and Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) (<a href="13253327" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">copernicus_OGCM_forcing.tar</a>).</p> <p>The data cover the entire year of 2019.</p> <p> </p>
MASCS 1.0: Synchronous atmospheric and oceanic data from a cross-shaped moored array in the northern South China Sea during 2014–2015
<p>This work presents a cross-shaped moored array dataset (MASCS 1.0) comprising five buoys and four moorings with synchronous atmospheric and oceanic data in the northern South China Sea during 2014–2015. The atmospheric data are observed by two meteorological instruments at the buoys. The oceanic data consist of sea surface waves measured using a wave recorder, temperature, and salinity from the surface to a depth of 400 m, and at 10 and 50 m above the ocean bottom using conductivity, temperature, and depth recorders. It also includes currents from the surface to a depth of 850 m measured using acoustic Doppler current profilers and measured at 10, 50, and 100 m above the floor using current meters. Additional measurements were taken for sea surface radiation, air visibility, chlorophyll, turbidity, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter at buoy 3, located at the center of the moored array. The data reveals air–sea interactions and oceanic processes in the upper and bottom ocean, especially the transition of the air–sea interface and ocean conditions from summer to winter monsoon and the effects of six tropical cyclones on the moored array. Multiscale processes were also recorded, such as air–sea fluxes, tides, internal waves, and low-frequency flows. The data are valuable and have many potential applications, including analyzing the phenomena and mechanisms of air–sea interactions and ocean dynamics and validating and improving numerical model simulations, data reanalysis, and assimilations.</p>
Modelling data in the South China Sea
<p>Model simulated daily current, temperature, salinity, chlorophyll and nitrate concentration for three experiments (control, case1 and case2) from our coupled physical-biological model of the South China Sea . For nitrate concentration, the dataset also includes the 16-day averaged budget terms along section S1. The modeled lagrangian particl tracking data is also avaiable. And all data used to draw Fig. 1 to Fig. 10 are in Figure_data.rar file.</p>

𝛅11B and B/Ca measurements of the modern and fossil Porites corals from the east coast Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea
<p>This datasets contain the 𝛅<sup>11</sup>B and B/Ca determinations of three modern <em>Porites</em> corals and four ancient <em>Porites</em> collected from the east coast of Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea. The measurements of skeletal boron isotopes were carried out with a MC-ICP-MS, and the B/Ca was determined by ICP-MS. </p>

A Flat-lying Transitional Free Gas to Gas Hydrate System in a Sand Layer in the Qiongdongnan Basin of the South China Sea
<p>Most marine gas hydrate systems follow a vertical pattern with gas hydrate overlying free gas. Here we document the discovery of a novel flat-lying transitional gas to hydrate system in a horizontal sand layer in the Qiongdongnan Basin of the South China Sea. Eight wells were drilled by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey in 2021-2022 to investigate the occurrence and mechanisms responsible for the formation of the system. We describe a free gas-bearing sand reservoir at the center of the system sustained by advecting hot fluids and gas; away from the advecting zone, the cooler, surrounding sand reservoir is filled with gas hydrate. Observations at this site show that temperature has a large control on hydrate formation in sands and may be a key mechanism which allows gas migration and hydrate formation in high-saturation hydrate filled sands.</p>
