The phantom chorus: birdsong boosts human well-being in protected areas
<p>Spending time in nature is known to benefit human health and well-being, but evidence is mixed as to whether biodiversity or perceptions of biodiversity contribute to these benefits. Perhaps more importantly, little is known about the sensory modalities by which humans perceive biodiversity and obtain benefits from their interactions with nature. Here, we used a "phantom bird song chorus" consisting of hidden speakers to experimentally increase audible birdsong biodiversity during "on" and "off" (i.e., ambient conditions) blocks on two trails to study the role of audition in biodiversity perception and self-reported well-being among hikers. Hikers exposed to the phantom chorus reported higher levels of restorative effects compared to those that experienced ambient conditions on both trails; however, increased restorative effects were directly linked to the phantom chorus on one trail and indirectly linked to the phantom chorus on the other trail through perceptions of avian biodiversity. Our findings add to a growing body of evidence linking mental health to nature experiences and suggest that audition is an important modality by which natural environments confer restorative effects. Finally, our results suggest that maintaining or improving natural soundscapes within protected areas may be an important component to maximizing human experiences.</p>
Data from: A meta-analysis of plant interaction networks reveals competitive hierarchies as well as facilitation and intransitivity
The extent to which competitive interactions and niche differentiation structure communities has been highly controversial. To quantify evidence for key features of plant community structure, I recharacterized published data from interaction experiments as networks of competitive and facilitative interactions. I measured the network structure of 31 woody and herbaceous communities, including the intensity, distribution, and diversity of interactions at the species-pair and community level to determine the generality of competition, winner-loser relationships, and unequal interaction allocation. I developed novel methodology using meta-analysis to incorporate interaction uncertainty into estimates of structural metrics among independent networks. Plant communities were competitive, but intraspecific interactions were sometimes more intense than interspecific interactions. On the whole, interactions were imbalanced and communities were transitive. However, facilitation, balanced interactions, and intransitivity were common in individual communities. Synthesizing network metrics using meta-analysis is an original approach with which to generalize community structure in a systematic way.
Existing well locations in Cebu and Mactan islands, Philippines (CSV format)
<p>This dataset consist of comma-separated values files containing the coordinate location of wells in Cebu and Mactan islands, Philippines expressed as points x (longitude) and y (latitude) in decimal degrees. The dataset is partitioned between a training and test subset at a proportion of 70% and 30%, respectively. The sources of the data were two government agencies tasked to manage the water resources in the Philippines. Shapefiles can be generated directly from the dataset using appropriate GIS software. </p>

Messinian vegetation and climate of the intermontane Florina-Ptolemais-Servia Basin, NW Greece: How well do plant fossils reflect past environments?
The late Miocene is marked by pronounced environmental changes and the appearance of strong temperature and precipitation seasonality. Although environmental heterogeneity is to be expected during this time, it is challenging to reconstruct palaeoenvironments using plant fossils. We investigated leaves and dispersed spores/pollen from 6.4–6 Ma strata in the intermontane Florina-Ptolemais-Servia Basin (FPS) of NW Greece. To assess how well plant fossils reflect the actual vegetation of the FPS, we assigned fossil-taxa to biomes providing a measure for environmental heterogeneity. Additionally, the palynological assemblage was compared to pollen spectra from modern lake sediments to assess biases in spore/pollen representation in the pollen record. We found a close match of the Vegora assemblage with modern Fagus–Abies forests of Turkey. Using taxonomic affinities of leaf fossils, we further established close similarities of the Vegora assemblage with modern laurophyllous oak forests of Afghanistan. Finally, using information from sedimentary environment and taphonomy, we distinguished local and distantly growing vegetation types. We then subjected the plant assemblage of Vegora to different methods of climate reconstruction and discussed their potentials and limitations. Leaf and spore/pollen records allow accurate reconstructions of palaeoenvironments in the FPS, whereas extra-regional vegetation from coastal lowlands is likely not captured.

Pompeii - Public Water Fountain 12 and Well
This public water fountain was scanned as part of the 2022 Pompeii Water and Sanitation Project field school run by the University of Missouri. The fountain is situated at VI.1.19 and is made of grey peperino slabs. The relief on the spout stone is no longer visible, but was reportedly of Silenus. Behind the fountain is an old well, with the remains of a water tower against the nort eastern corner. The wall of the well facing the fountain has the remains of a lararium altar - when the fountain was originally discovered, a fresco of lares was still visible. The wells predate the fountains and were the original source of water before the aqueduct and fountains were built. Poço Tapado | Covered Well
Este poço foi descoberto em acompanhamento arqueológico da intervenção de renovação das infra estruturas do Largo dos Paços do Concelho, Rua Teófilo Braga e Terreiro de São João de Deus. Este poço está na origem do topónimo da rua do Poço Tapado. No séc. XVII é referido como um dos chafarizes da vila. Em 1698 a câmara encarregou um pedreiro das obras "que se haviam de fazer no Poço Tapado desta vila e o chafariz de donde lhe vai a água do dito poço, com a obrigação de se alimpar e desentulhar o dito poço e assim mais de se alevantar acima o que era necessário e fazer seus remates necessários para que a obra ficasse lustrosa." A estrutura que foi encontrada possui pelo menos duas fases de construção: uma fase medieval com construção de pedra seca; outra fase moderna com a construção de uma abóbada com blocos em granito e onde se verificam várias marcas de canteiro. St. Cummin's Holy Well - Oughterard Co. Galway
St. Cummins Holy well is located in the townland of Lemmonfield in Oughterard Co. Galway. An ash tree near the well is said to have provided a cure to Cholera during the 1832 outbreak, when local people would peel off the bark. Records show that local people would take a hats off and make a slight bow to the well. Well (a Dutch 'welput'), Boazum, Netherlands
On the 16th of July 2017, a large hole opened up in the garden of a family in the Frisian village of Boazum, the Netherlands. The residents soon realised that it was the result of a collapse above a previously unknown brick-lined well in an overall good state of conservation. The construction was documented by using photogrammetry, and the resulting 3D model proved valuable for a further constructional and functional analysis. The well dates from the 19th century.
