10Be concentrations constraining surface age and valley growth rate in a seepage-derived drainage network in the Apalachicola River basin, Florida

<p class="Head1"><span><span>Measuring rates of valley head migration and determining the timing of canyon-opening are insightful quantifications for the history and evolution of planetary surfaces.  Horizontal spatial gradients of <em>in situ-</em>produced cosmogenic nuclide concentrations provide a framework for assessing the migration of these and similar topographic features. We developed a theoretical model for the concentration of <em>in situ</em> produced cosmogenic radionuclides in valley walls during retreat of a valley head. The retreat rate is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the spatial concentration gradient and proportional to local nuclide accumulation rates. By solving for a spatial gradient in concentration along a valley parallel transect, we created an expression for the explicit determination of valley head retreat, termed unzipping.  We applied this theory to a developing seepage-derived drainage network along the Apalachicola River, Florida, USA.  Sample concentrations along a valley margin transect vary systematically from 2.9 x 10<sup>5</sup> atoms/g to 3.5 x 10<sup>5</sup> atoms/g resulting in a gradient of 160 atoms/g/m, and from this value a valley head retreat rate of 0.025 m/y is found.  The discrepancy between overall network age and current rates of valley head migration suggests intermittent network growth which is consistent with glacial-interglacial precipitation variations during the Pleistocene. This method can be applied to a wide range of Earth-surface environments. For the <sup>10</sup>Be system, this method should be sensitive to unzipping rates bounded between 10<sup>-6</sup> m/y and 10<sup>0</sup> m/y.</span></span></p>

<p>The files contain data on the floral ecology of <em>Clinopodium alpinum</em> collected along an elevational gradient in the Berchtesgaden National Park in Germany in 2017. The data are presented in the work entitled "Nectar robbing rather than pollinator availability constrains reproduction of a bee-flowered plant at high elevations" by Patrick L. Kohl and Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter. Files include data on flower visitor observations (including raw data on the number of visits by individual specifmens), data on seed/ovule ratios (both open pollinated and bagged flowers), data on the incidence of nectar robbing by bumble bees (the frequency of corolla perforations) and of flower herbivory by Eulophidae, and data on basic flowering traits of <em>C. alpinum</em> (number of flowers per inflorescence, corolla tube length, display size).</p>

Forest disturbances and climate constrain carbon allocation dynamics in trees

<p>Forest disturbances such as drought, fire and logging affect the forest carbon dynamics and the terrestrial carbon sink. Forest mortality after disturbances creates uncertainties that need to be accounted for to understand forest dynamics and their associated C-sink. We combined data from permanent resampling plots and biomass oriented dendroecological plots to estimate time series of annual woody biomass growth (ABI) in several forests. ABI time series were used to benchmark a vegetation model to analyze dynamics in forest productivity and carbon allocation forced by environmental variability. The model implements source and sink limitations explicitly by dynamically constraining carbon allocation of assimilated photosynthates as a function of temperature and moisture. Bias in tree-ring reconstructed ABI increased back in time from data collection and with increasing disturbance intensity. ABI bias ranged from zero, in open stands without recorded mortality, to over 100% in stands with major disturbances such as thinning or snowstorms. Stand leaf area was still lower than in control plots decades after heavy thinning. Disturbances, species life-history strategy and climatic variability affected carbon partioning patterns in trees. Resprouting broadleaves reached maximum biomass growth at earlier ages than nonresprouting conifers. Environmental variability and leaf area explained much variability in woody biomass allocation. <span>Effects of </span>stand competition on C-allocation were mediated by changes in stand leaf area except after major disturbances. Divergence between tree-ring estimated and simulated ABI were caused by unaccounted changes in allocation or misrepresentation of some functional process independently of the model calibration approach. Higher disturbance intensity produced greater modifications of the C-allocation pattern, increasing error in reconstructed biomass dynamics. Legacy effects from disturbances decreased model performance and reduce the potential use of ABI as a proxy to net primary productivity. Trait-based dynamics of C-allocation in response to environmental variability need to be refined in vegetation models.</p>

Data from: Is adaptation to climate change really constrained in niche specialists?

Species with restricted distributions make up the vast majority of biodiversity. Recent evidence suggests that Drosophila species with restricted tropical distributions lack genetic variation in the key trait of desiccation resistance. It has therefore been predicted that tropically restricted species will be limited in their evolutionary response to future climatic changes and will face higher risks of extinction. However, these assessments have been made using extreme levels of desiccation stress (less than 10% relative humidity (RH)) that extend well beyond the changes projected for the wet tropics under climate change scenarios over the next 30 years. Here, we show that significant evolutionary responses to less extreme (35% RH) but more ecologically realistic levels of climatic change and desiccation stress are in fact possible in two species of rainforest restricted Drosophila. Evolution may indeed be an important means by which sensitive rainforest-restricted species are able to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Paleomagnetism of the Middle and Late Permian rocks from eastern Tibet constrains the Late Paleozoic paleography and drift history of the North Qiangtang terrane

<p>The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau comprises a mosaic of geologically distinct Paleozoic and Mesozoic terranes that originated from the northern margin of Gondwana, splitting from it in the Carboniferous or Permian before subsequently drifting northward to collide with Laurasia in the Mesozoic. However, the paleography&nbsp;and drift history of these&nbsp;terranes&nbsp;remain poorly constrained.&nbsp;Here we present new Middle&nbsp;and Late&nbsp;Permian paleomagnetic data from the North Qiangtang Terrane, which allow us to determine that it drifted from ~24&deg;S to&nbsp;~9&deg;S from&nbsp;the Middle to&nbsp;Late Permian. On the basis of paleomagnetic and geological data of the Tibetan&nbsp;terranes, we propose&nbsp;that the North Qiangtang Terrane was stably located at ~24&deg;S during the Late Carboniferous and&nbsp;Middle Permian, likely affiliated with&nbsp;the Pamir-Qamdo continental archipelago, and the&nbsp;rapid northward drift of the North Qiangtang terrane&nbsp;starts&nbsp;in the Middle Permian.</p>
