How does moving Public Engagement with Research Online Change Audience Diversity? Comparing Inclusion Indicators for 2019 & 2020 European Researchers' Night events

Taking place annually in more than 400 cities, European Researchers’ Night is a pan- European synchronized event that aims to bring researchers closer to the public. In this paper audience profiles are compared from events in 2019 and 2020. In 2019, face-to-face events reached an estimated 1.6 million attendees, while in 2020, events shifted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and reached an estimated 2.3 million attendees. Focusing on social inclusion metrics, survey data is analyzed across two national contexts (Ireland and Malta) in 2019 (n=656) and 2020 (n=506). The results from this exploratory, descriptive study shed light on how moving public engagement with research online shifted audience profiles. Based on prior research about the digital divide in access and use of online media, hypotheses were proposed that online European Researchers’ Night events would attract audiences with higher educational attainment levels and greater self-reported, subjective economic well-being. While changes were observed from 2019 to 2020, results for each hypothesis show a mixed picture. The first hypothesis was upheld for the highest education levels but failed for the lowest levels suggesting that the pivot to online events simultaneously attracted participants with no formal education and those with postgraduate qualifications, while attracting less of those with undergraduate or lower levels of education. The second hypothesis was not upheld, with online European Researchers’ Night events attracting audiences with slightly higher levels of economic well-being compared to face-to-face events. The findings of this study indicate that European Researchers’ Night events present a clear opportunity to measure the effects of the digital divide in relation to public engagement with research across Europe.

Galactic chemical evolution of the solar neighborhood, solar twins and exoplanet indicators

Galactic chemical evolution (GCE), solar analogues or twins, and peculiarities of
the solar composition with respect to the twins are inextricably related.
We examine GCE parameters from the literature and present newly derived values
using a quadratic fit that gives zero for a Solar age (i.e. 4.6 Gyr).
We show how the GCE parameters may be used not only to ``correct'' abundances
to the solar age, but to predict {\bf average} relative elemental
abundances as a function of age.
We address the question of whether the solar abundances
are depleted in refractories and enhanced in volatiles and
find that the answer is sensitive to the selection of a
representative standard. Our best quality data sets do
not support the notion that the Sun is depleted in refractories.
A simple model allows us to estimate
the amount of refractory-rich material missing from the sun
or alternately added to the average solar twin. The model
gives between zero and 1.4 earth masses.

Trajetorias dataset: environmental, epidemiological, and economic indicators for the Brazilian Amazon

The Trajetorias dataset is a harmonized set of environmental, epidemiological, and poverty indicators for all municipalities of the Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA). This dataset is the result of a scientific synthesis research initiative conducted by scientists from several natural and social sciences fields, consolidating multidisciplinary indicators into a coherent dataset for integrated and interdisciplinary studies of the Brazilian Amazon. The Trajetorias dataset is organized in dimensions describing: environmental degradation, land use and land cover, human mobility, climate anomalies, the burden of vector-borne diseases, and poverty indices for rural and urban populations for each of the BLA municipalities. Characterizing the environmental, epidemiological, and socioeconomic profile of the municipalities. These indicators were designed to unveil the specificities of the Amazon region, so that the relationships between these dimensions can be explored regarding past and current enacted policies. The Trajetorias dataset relies on four surveys - the two demographic censuses conducted in 2000 and 2010, and the two agrarian censuses conducted in 2006 and 2017, from which were defined fixed timestamps for analysis. The demographic censuses are the source of data for the multidimensional poverty indices. Environmental data come from satellite images collected by several national and international programs, such as the Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Program (PRODES), DEGRAD, and DETER, accounting for changes in landscape that took place between each demographic census and the subsequent agrarian census. Lastly, disease control data was obtained from the National Disease Notification System and summarized for the 5-year period centered in the agrarian censuses.
