Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Forest Cover in the Gwynns Falls watershed from 1914 to 2004
Landscape structure in the Eastern US experienced great changes in the last century with the expansion of forest cover into abandoned agricultural land and the clearing of secondary forest cover for urban development. In this paper, the spatial and temporal patterns of forest cover from 1914 to 2004 in the Gwynns Falls watershed in Baltimore, Maryland were quantified from historic maps and aerial photographs. Using a database of forest patches from six times—1914, 1938, 1957, 1971, 1999, and 2004—we found that forest cover changed, both temporally and spatially. While total forest area remained essentially constant, turnover in forest cover was very substantial. Less than 20% of initial forest cover remained unchanged. Forest cover became increasingly fragmented as the number, size, shape, and spatial distribution of forest patches within the watershed changed greatly. Forest patch change was also analyzed within 3-km distance bands extending from the urban core to the more suburban end of the watershed. This analysis showed that, over time, the location of high rates of forest cover change shifted from urban to suburban bands which coincides with the spatial shift of urbanization. Forest cover tended to be more stable in and near the urban center, whereas forest cover changed more in areas where urbanization was still in process. These results may have critical implications for the ecological functioning of forest patches and underscore the need to integrate multi-temporal data layers to investigate the spatial pattern of forest cover and the temporal variations of that spatial pattern. Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918
<p>The Auckland Province Roll of Honour for WWI is an alphabetical list of those service personnel from the Auckland Province who died during, or as a result of injuries caused by, World War I. The two parchment Rolls of Honour are on permanent display in the World War One Sanctuary at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland, New Zealand and duplicate the names held on the walls.</p> <p>The Roll contains an alphabetical list of servicemen, including regimental number, rank, honours, unit and next-of-kin.<br> The original Roll of Honour was handwritten on parchment by 2/832 Major Percival Beaumont Greenhough and then bound into two volumes.</p> <p>The illuminated frontispieces were created using gold leaf by Louise Tilsley, and the bronze caskets the volumes are currently displayed in were created by English-born sculptor, Richard Oliver Gross.</p> <p>The Roll was purchased in 1934 by the Auckland Institute and Museum from the Auckland Provincial Roll of Honour Committee.</p> <p>This Manuscript has been transcribed and matched against the <a href="https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/popular-searches/wwi-roll-of-honour">Online Cenotaph database</a> part of Auckland War Memorial Museum and includes 7,289 entries.</p> <p>60 entries have not been matched including those who are unverifiable and/or have been listed as part of the Gisborne, Ngaruawahia and Opotiki Lists. Within this list there are examples of New Zealand personnel who served but did not die as a result of their service including Lieut. David F. Scott who died in the Solomon Islands during 1930. Or Frank Charles Roche (58360, 619520) who died in1980 but is listed in the Roll. This means that some individuals are out of scope and not included in Online Cenotaph while other names are unverified. The parish apartment in **Slobodnica** (Croatia - Slavonia) from 1914 was made according to the artistic style of **Art Nouveau**. The façade has **three features** that marked that period. The style started in France (at the end of the 19th century) and came to the rural part of Croatia before the First World War. It was a **status symbol**.
