Indirect cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties of Zr-Cu-Ag metallic glass coatings
<p>In order to evaluate a possible antibacterial effect of the released ions, specimens (4x4 mm2 square metallic glass coatings) were submerged with 7 ml of LB broth and maintained at 37°C inside a shaker (120 rpm) for 1, 5 days, following the same procedure exploited for the ions release evaluation. At each time point the supernatants were collected and used to cultivate bacteria at a defined concentration (1x105 cells/ml); bacteria cultivated with supernatants obtained from ions-free PBT were considered as control. The released ions killing activity was evaluated in terms of metabolic activity that was measured by the alamar blue assay as previously detailed. The same procedure with LB medium for hMSC was repeated. </p>

A dataset of DFT-computed oxygen vacancy formation energies of metal oxides
<p>This dataset contains DFT-computed oxygen vacancy formation energies of different oxygen sites in over 1000 metal oxides present on the Open Quantum Materials Database (OQMD). Entries in the Data.csv file are indexed using the OQMD entry ID of the pristine structure, and list, alongside the oxygen vacancy formation energy, a number of other properties used as features in machine learning models. An exemplary code allowing to test the performance of a random forest regressor using different sets of features to predict the vacancy formation energy, as a function of training set size, is provided in Test_Models.py. More details on the dataset and machine learning models can be found in: arXiv:2309.01160. </p><p> </p><p><strong>Acknowledgments</strong></p><p>The work was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy under Grant DE-EE0008089. Utilising quadrat.count and quadrat.test to understand metal axes as spatial point patterns
<p>As part of a Master's thesis, the spatial distribution and density of metal axes found by private metal detectorists were assessed in relation to different covariates: soil type, soil texture, land cover and estimated preservation capacity (Kibblewhite et al. 2016). The data derives from England and Wales (Portable Antiquities Scheme), Denmark (Digitale Metaldetektorfund) and the Netherlands (Portable Antiquities Scheme). Calculations were performed with the functions 'quadrat.count', 'intensity.quadratcount' and 'quadrat.test' in R. There are three separate .Rmd files per country, each refering to a particular covariable.</p>

Techno-economic model of Methane pyrolysis in liquid metal bubble column reactor for hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore
<p>Reducing emissions from the iron and steel industry is essential to achieve the Paris climate goals.A new system to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production is proposed in this article by coupling hydrogen direct reduction of iron ore (H-DRI) and natural gas pyrolysis on the liquid metal surface inside a bubble column reactor. If grid electricity from the EU is used, the emissions would be 435 kgCO\textsubscript{2}/tls without considering methane leakage from the extraction, storage, and transport of natural gas. Solid carbon, produced as a by-product of natural gas decomposition, finds applications in many industrial sectors, including as a replacement for coal in coke ovens. The specific energy consumption (SEC) of the proposed system is approximately 6.3 MWh per ton of liquid steel(tls). It is higher than other competing technologies,3.48 MWh/tls for water electrolysis based DRI, and 4.3-4.5 MWh/tls for natural gas-based DRI and blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) respectively. The utilization of large quantities of natural gas, where the carbon remains unused, is the major reason for the high SEC. Preliminary analysis of the system revealed that it has the potential to compete with existing technologies to produce CO\textsubscript{2}free steel, if renewable electricity is used. Further studies on the kinetics of the bubble column reactor, H-DRI shaft furnace, design, and sizing of components, along with the building of industrial prototypes are required to improve the understanding of the system performance.</p>
