Data from: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs use in older adults decreases risk of Alzheimer's disease mortality
Alzheimer disease (AD) mortality risk in a large cohort of subjects treated or not with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is unknown. Our objective was to determine whether NSAIDs use is associated with decreased risk of AD mortality. Methods: In this prospective, population-based study (Neurological Disorders in Central Spain [NEDICES]) of 5,072 people without AD (aged 65 years and older), sociodemographic, comorbidity factors, and current medications were recorded at baseline. Community-dwelling older adults were followed for a median of 12.7 years, after which the death certificates of deceased participants were examined. 2,672 (52.7%) of 5,072 participants died, including 504 (18.9%) NSAIDs users and 2,168 (81.1%) non-users. Of the 2,672 deceased participants, 113 (4.2%) had AD as a cause of death (8 [1.6%] among NSAIDs users and 105 [4.8%] among non-users, chi-square = 10.70, p=0.001). In an unadjusted Cox model, risk of AD mortality was decreased in NSAIDs users (hazard ratio [HR] for AD mortality = 0.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.17–0.72, p=0.004) when compared to non-users. After adjusting for numerous demographic factors and co-morbidities, the HR for AD mortality in NSAIDs users was 0.29, 95% CI 0.12–0.73, p=0.009. Stratified analyses showed a significantly decreased risk of AD mortality with aspirin, whereas non-aspirin NSAIDs only showed a statistical trend toward significance in the adjusted Cox regression models. NSAIDs use was associated with 71% decreased risk of AD mortality in older adults. Our results support the hypothesis that NSAIDs use is a protective factor of developing AD.

Designing Apps to Support Engagement by Older Adults: A think-aloud study of the eNutri dietary-intake assessment web app
<p>Evidence suggests that, compared with younger users, older adults benefit from additional support when engaging with new apps. This paper presents a remote observation study of 15 UK older adults (aged >65 years) using eNutri, a web-based dietary assessment app. The results highlight the importance placed by older adults on having good instructions and support when learning and using apps, and suggest that including features such as instructional videos, “contact us” information, and explicit guidance on “commonly-known” features may be important for this population. The study also found heterogeneity within the group in terms of app delivery preferences (smartphone vs web-based), which serves as a reminder that when designing apps for older adults, it may be helpful to bear in mind the variation in people's use of and comfort with types of devices.</p>

Can time heal anything? Exposure to traumatic events, autobiographical memory, and the quality of life among older adults. The role of time perspective.
<p><span><span> </span><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong>. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between autobiographical memory, exposure to traumatic events, and quality of life, and also whether temporal perspective represents a significant mediator of these relations, in a group of elderly people. <strong><span>Method</span></strong>. The study was conducted using a sample of 362 participants (<em>M</em>age = 68.35, <em>SD</em> = 6.67; 65.5% women and 34.5% men). They completed the questionnaires for measuring quality of life, exposure to traumatic events, autobiographical memory, and time perspective. <strong><span>Results</span></strong>. The results indicated that direct exposure to major traumatic life events negatively predicted quality of life, while autobiographical memory was not a predictor for quality of life. Time perspective (i.e., negative past, negative future) partially mediated the relationship between exposure to traumatic life events and quality of life. At the same time, the temporal perspective mediated the relationship between autobiographical memory and quality of life. <strong><span>Discussion</span></strong><span>. How people manage their lives after exposure to traumatic events should be of particular interest to society as a whole and it is necessary to take into account various factors related to quality of life, especially in the case of elderly people. To improve quality of life, interventions can address the physical and psychological dimensions, as well as social interactions and the quality of the environment in which people live.</span></span></p>
