Data from: Mapping phosphorus hotspots in Sydney's organic wastes: a spatially-explicit inventory to facilitate urban phosphorus recycling
Phosphorus is an essential element for food production whose main global sources are becoming scarce and expensive. Furthermore, losses of phosphorus throughout the food production chain can also cause serious aquatic pollution. Recycling urban organic waste resources high in phosphorus could simultaneously address scarcity concerns for agricultural producers who reply on phosphorus fertilisers, and waste managers seeking to divert waste from landfills to decrease environmental burdens. Recycling phosphorus back to agricultural lands however requires careful logistical planning to maximize benefits and minimize costs including, processing and transportation. The first step towards such analyses is quantifying recycling potential in a spatially-explicit way. Here we present such inventories and scenarios for the Greater Sydney Basin's recyclable phosphorus supply and agricultural demand. In 2011, there was fifteen times more phosphorus available in organic waste than agricultural demand for phosphorus in Sydney. Hypothetically, if future city residents shifted to a plant-based diet, eliminated edible food waste, and removed animal production in the Greater Sydney Basin, available phosphorus supply would decrease to 7.25 kt of phosphorus per year, even when accounting for population growth by 2031, and demand would also decrease to 0.40 kt of phosphorus per year. Creating a circular phosphorus economy for Sydney, in all scenarios considered, would require effective recycling strategies which include transport outside of the Greater Sydney Basin. These spatially explicit scenarios can be used as a tool to facilitate stakeholders engagement to identify opportunities and barriers for appropriate organic waste recycling strategies.
Data from: Does mining waste concentration in the soil interfere with leaf selection by Acromyrmex subterraneus (Formicidae)
<p>Revegetation programs are proposed to recover the soil and biodiversity of disturbed sites, this being the case of the Rio Doce basin, Brazil. This region was hugely affected by a mining waste dam disruption, whose leakage on the soil altered its chemical and physical characteristics, and consequently the physiology and performance of plants. The expected alterations of the plants can make them more attractive for leaf-cutting ants, as lower water content induces an increase of non-structural carbohydrates. In this context, we evaluated whether <em>Acromyrmex subterraneus</em> workers differentiate among plants grown on soil with different mining waste concentrations. Leaf discs from plants grown in soil containing 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of mining waste were simultaneously offered to ant colonies in a foraging arena. The number of transported discs from each mining waste concentration was recorded until all discs of any concentration had been transported. Leaf selection assays were repeated after 30 days due to the novelty effect phenomenon. Leaf thickness, water, starch and total soluble carbohydrate contents were determined. Leaf discs from plants grown in soil with 100% of mining waste concentration were preferentially selected in both selection assays. Leaf thickness and water content were significantly lower in plants from the aforementioned treatment, while starch and total soluble carbohydrates were higher. Results suggest that seedlings implanted in sites with high mining waste concentration are under high predation risk. Revegetation programs must measure the impact of leaf-cutting ants as both herbivorous and soil ecosystem engineers, for the best management of these insects.</p>
Data from: Electrokinetic remediation of heavy metals from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash pretreated by nitric acid
Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ash has high concentration of Heavy Metals (HMs) which are hazardous to environment. Moreover, it has high pH and buffering capacity which hinders the removal of HMs. Another constraining factor is considerable fraction of HMs which existe in oxidizable and reducible states. The acid pretreatment of MSWI fly ash is key solution to these problem. Therefore, current experiment is carried out to evaluate the effect of acid pretreatment of MSWI fly ash and reaction/proposed time on removal efficiency of HMS through electrokinetic experiment. The leaching experiment results show that acid pretreatment has increased the desorption/release of heavy metals ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+). It enhances the migration of HMs ions in electrolytic cell which get precipitated at cathode thereby increasing the removal efficiency of HMS in electrokintic experiment. Moreover, it is found that prolonged proposed time (12 d) has significant effect on removal efficiency of HMs. Finally, it is concluded that acid pretreatment and prolonged proposed time has enhanced the removal electrokinetic remediation of HMS which is carried out via three process i.e. desorption (enhanced by acidification), migration and precipitation.
Data from: Putting the waste out: a proposed mechanism for transmission of the mycoparasite Escovopsis between leafcutter ant colonies
The attine ant system is a remarkable example of symbiosis. An antagonistic partner within this system is the fungal parasite <i>Escovopsis, </i>a genus specific to the fungal gardens of the Attini. <i>Escovopsis </i>parasitizes the <i>Leucoagaricus </i>symbiont that leaf-cutting ants (<i>Acromyrmex</i>, <i>Atta</i>) have been farming over the past 8-12 million years. However, it has been a puzzle how <i>Escovopsis </i>reaches its host. During a seasonal survey of nests of <i>Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus </i>in Atlantic rainforest in Brazil, <i>Escovopsis </i>was detected in all the sampled fungal garden waste tips or middens (n = 111). Middens were built strategically; always below the nest entrances. Here, we report the first evidence of a putative mechanism for horizontal transmission of <i>Escovopsis </i>between attine colonies. It is posited that leaf-cutting ants pick up the spores from soil and litter during foraging and vector the mycoparasite between attine colonies. Field and laboratory experiments, using <i>Atta laevigata</i> and <i>Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus</i>, confirm that <i>Escovopsis </i>spores are phoretic, and have an in-built dormancy, broken by the presence of their <i>Leucoagaricus </i>host. However, in the coevolutionary arms race, <i>Atta </i>ants may lose out – despite most species in the genus investing in a more advanced waste disposal system – due to the insanitary habits of their <i>Acromyrmex</i> neighbours.
