The geological map of Italy 1:100,000 scale INSPIRE harmonised

<p>The INSPIRE Directive institute a European infrastructure for spatial information to support the environmental policies of the European Union. In the mainframe of the Directive, 34 different themes that represents different environmental information has been identified. One of this is the Geology theme; it is split into three subthemes and represent a &quot;reference data theme&rdquo; because it provides basic knowledge on the physical properties and composition of rocks and sediments, their structure and their age as represented in geological maps, as well as geomorphological features.</p> <p>In the feature catalogue of the INSPIRE application schema Geology has been defined the term lists for the information types. Some of these are fully compliant with the features defined in the 1:100.000 scale geological map database and are used in the semantic harmonization procedure.</p> <p>The Geological Map of Italy at 1:100,000 scale is, at present, the most detailed complete geological map of Italy. It consists of a collage of 277 sheets, and it was produced over a period of more than 100 years, with some sheets in two editions. In the late 1990s, it was transformed into a vector database by digitising from raster format. The dataset was revised, integrated, and corrected between 2005-2009 by the Geological Survey of Italy. In 2021-22 the dataset was harmonised according to the INSPIRE and GeoSciML data models.</p> <p>The whole area has been subdivided into three different .gml format dataset on geographic base: Northern, Central and Southern&nbsp;Italy.</p>

Active gas seepage in western Spitsbergen fjords, Svalbard archipelago: spatial extent and geological controls

<p>The following digital data package is provided as part of the submission of the publication Rodes et al. (2023) <em>Active gas seepage in western Spitsbergen fjords, Svalbard archipelago: spatial extent and geological controls</em>, considered for publication in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science. The dataset contains the distribution and characteristics of the gas flares observed during the HE-449 cruise in 2015 and the GASGEM cruise in 2021. Moreover, it contains the interpreted outcropping areas of the geological units in Isfjorden and Van Mijenfjorden. Each dataset is provided in GeoJSON, Geopackage and Shapefile file extensions. Finally, we provide a minimal working example to calculate the flare density per multibeam area of outcropping geological units.</p>

Evidence of cospeciation between termites and their gut bacteria on a geological time scale

<p>Termites host diverse communities of gut microbes, including many bacterial lineages only found in this habitat. The bacteria endemic to termite guts are transmitted via two routes: a vertical route from parent colonies to daughter colonies and a horizontal route between colonies sometimes belonging to different termite species. The relative importance of both transmission routes in shaping the gut microbiota of termites remains unknown. Using bacterial marker genes derived from the gut metagenomes of 197 termites and one Cryptocercus cockroach, we show that bacteria endemic to termite guts are mostly acquired by vertical transfers. We identified eighteen lineages of gut bacteria showing cophylogenetic patterns with termites over tens of millions of years. Horizontal transfer rates estimated for these lineages compared to those of fifteen mitochondrial genes suggested that sixteen bacterial lineages present cophylogenetic patterns that could be explained by a model involving no horizontal transfers. Some of these associations probably date back more than 150 million years and are an order of magnitude older than the cophylogenetic patterns between mammalian hosts and their gut bacteria. Our results suggest that termites have cospeciated with their gut bacteria since first appearing in the geological record.</p>

Absolute Gravity Measurements in the Geology Building of the University of Utah Salt Lake City

<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This report contains the results of absolute gravity measurements carried out on the first floor of the geology building of the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City (USA) in September 2021. The measurements took place on a pre-existing benchmark that has been apparently occupied with an A-10 absolute gravimeter. No information or documentation about previous occupations are available.</p> <p>The absolute gravimeter FG5X#302-HC was operated by Olivier Francis from the University of Luxembourg.</p>

Data from: leaf functional diversity and environmental filtering in a tropical dry forest: comparison between two geological substrates

<p><span>The role of geological substrate in shaping plant community functional diversity remains poorly understood. Considering the involvement of leaves in the energy, water and nutrient economics of plants, we hypothesized that leaves experience geology-related filtering, impacting functional attributes and functional leaf community diversity on different substrates. We studied tropical dry forest communities on limestone and siliciclastic phyllite-derived soils, comparing their functional diversity and soil physico-chemical properties. We predicted the most benign habitat (less severe filter) to be associated with higher leaf functional diversity and an acquisitive strategy prevalence, while the more stressful habitat should show conservative leaf traits and lower leaf functional diversity. We measured six traits in 31 common tree species (representing ~80% of community crown cover): leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf dry matter content, petiole length, and leaf blade narrowness. Leaf functional diversity was assessed through the functional trait dispersion metric. Intraspecific functional variation was examined in 25 species shared between substrates. The limestone substrate was more fertile (higher phosphorous) with higher water retention, while phyllite had higher nitrogen and lower humidity. Principal component analysis segregated plots by substrate, with limestone plots being more clustered. Community leaf functional diversity was higher in the limestone forest. Most species examined showed inter-substrate trait differences in at least one leaf functional trait. The two substrates constituted distinct growth environments, with the more benign substrate associated to higher community functional leaf diversity. The intraspecific analysis revealed the prevalence of acquisitive traits in the more benign and more conservative traits in the more stressful habitat. This study advances our understanding of the role of geological substrate as an environmental filter in tropical dry forest, influencing leaf functional responses and emphasizing the importance of intraspecific functional variation.</span></p>

Beetle evolution illuminates the geological history of the world's most diverse tropical archipelago

<p><span>The geologically-complex Indo-Australian-Melanesian archipelago (IAMA) hosts extraordinarily high levels of species richness and endemism and has long served as a natural laboratory for studying biogeography and evolution. Nonetheless, its geological history and the provenance and evolution of its biodiversity remain poorly understood. Here, we provide a geological scenario for the IAMA informed by a time-calibrated molecular phylogeny of 1,006 species of <em>Trigonopterus</em> weevils—an exceptionally diverse radiation of regionally-endemic flightless beetles. Moreover, we performed a statistical biogeographic analysis and examined timing and patterns in the accumulation of lineages residing in <em>a priori</em>-defined geographic units comprising the IAMA. We estimate that <em>Trigonopterus</em> originated in Australia during the early Paleogene. Subsequent rapid diversification in the area of the present-day Papuan Peninsula suggests the presence of proto-Papuan islands by the middle Eocene; the New Guinea North Coast Ranges were colonized in the late Eocene, followed by the New Guinea Highlands and the Bird´s Head Peninsula. We inferred the presence of terrestrial habitat in the North Moluccas and Sulawesi in the late Oligocene and the subsequent rapid colonization of Sundaland and the Lesser Sunda Islands. New Caledonia and Samoa were colonized from the Papuan Peninsula, and their faunas also diverged in the late Oligocene. These biota-informed time estimates are compatible with geological data from the region and shed new light on IAMA paleogeography, even where geological evidence has been lost to erosion. Beetle evolution thus appears to have closely tracked the geological evolution of the IAMA, revealing a uniquely well-resolved view of regional biogeography.</span><span><br></span></p>

Runoff threshold responses in continental Boreal catchments: Nexus of sub-humid climate, low-relief, surficial geology and land cover

<p>Revision in journal Water Resources Research,Paper # 2023WR034752RR</p> <p>the publication doi:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2023WR034752">doi.org/10.1029/2023WR034752</a></p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>We examined annual runoff from 20 meso-scale catchments over 25 years, to elucidate how interactions between physiography and long-term weather patterns influence the magnitude of spatial-temporal thresholds in annual runoff responses in water-limited, low-relief, glaciated continental Boreal landscapes. Annual runoff ranged over two orders of magnitude (&lt;3 to &gt;300 mm) among catchments receiving similar annual precipitation. Threshold relationships were observed with cumulative regional moisture deficits that reflected spatial-temporal differences in effective storage and antecedent moisture among catchments with differing portions of glacial-deposit and land-cover types. The importance of the glacial-deposit texture and forest-peatland cover on runoff behavior among catchments varied with weather patterns and catchment antecedent moisture states. Dry states yielded low annual runoff that ranged by two orders of magnitude (0 to 80 mm), with higher values in catchments with predominantly coarse-textured deposits. During near normal antecedent moisture, annual runoff remained low (&lt;10 mm) in catchments associated with fine-textured, hummocky landforms and deciduous forests. Annual runoff &gt;10 mm was observed only in catchments with extensive peatlands. Infrequent wet states resulted in increased runoff in all catchments; however, ranges in maximum runoff were associated with heterogeneity in catchment landforms and land covers. Integrating cumulative precipitation with the proportion of glacial-deposit and land-cover types within catchments can: 1) represent water cycling and regional sink-source dynamics controlling runoff, and 2) provide an effective management framework for predicting climate and land-use impacts on regional runoff in water-limited, low-relief, glaciated landscapes such as the Boreal Plain.</p>
