Dataset for: Biomimetic models of fish gill rakers as lateral displacement arrays for particle separation
<p class="MsoNormal">Ram suspension-feeding fish such as herring use gill rakers to separate small food particles from large water volumes while swimming forward with an open mouth. Fish gill raker function was tested using 3D-printed conical models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations over a range of slot aspect ratios. (See CFD simulation output in Dryad dataset: case and data files for ANSYS Fluent 19.1 CFD simulations.)</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Our hypothesis predicting the exit of particles based on mass flow rates, dividing streamlines (i.e., stagnation streamlines) at the slots between gill rakers, and particle size was supported by the results of experiments with physical models in a recirculating flume. (See R code with embedded comments in Dryad dataset to test Hypotheses 1 and 2 for particle exit/trapping.)</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Particle movement in suspension-feeding fish gill raker models was consistent with the physical principles of lateral displacement arrays ("bump arrays") for microfluidic and mesofluidic separation of particles by size. Although particles were smaller than the slots between rakers, particles skipped over the vortical region that was generated downstream from each raker. Particles "bumped" on anterior raker surfaces during posterior transport. (See particle movement data in Dryad dataset: three files for particle contact, exit, and retention in the physical models.)</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Experiments in a recirculating flume demonstrated that the shortest distance between the dividing streamline and the raker surface preceding the slot predicts the maximum radius of a particle that will exit from the model by passing through the slot. This theoretical maximum radius is analogous to the critical separation radius identified with reference to the stagnation streamlines in microfluidic and mesofluidic devices that use deterministic lateral displacement and sieve-based lateral displacement. These conclusions provide new perspectives and metrics for analyzing crossflow and cross-step filtration in fish with applications to filtration engineering. </p>

Spatial separation of prey from livestock facilitates coexistence of a specialized large carnivore with human land use
<p><span>There is an increasing emphasis in</span><span> conservation strategies for large carnivores on facilitating their coexistence with humans.</span> <span>Justification for coexistence</span><span> strategies should be based on a quantitative assessment of currently remaining large carnivores in human-dominated landscapes. An essential part of a carnivore's coexistence strategy has to rely on its prey</span><span>. In this research, we studied snow leopards <em>Panthera uncia</em> whose habitat mainly comprises human-dominated, unprotected areas, to understand how a large carnivore and its primary prey, the bharal <em>Pseudois nayaur</em>, could coexist with human land use activities in a large proportion of its range. Using a combination of livestock census, camera trapping and wildlife surveys, across a broad gradient of </span><span>livestock grazing intensity in a 363,000 km2 landscape on the Tibetan Plateau, </span><span>we found no evidence of livestock grazing impacts on snow leopard habitat use, bharal density and spatial distribution, even though livestock density was 13 times higher than bharal density.</span><span> Bharal were found to prefer utilizing more rugged habitats at higher elevations with lower grass forage conditions, whereas livestock dominated in flat valleys at lower elevations with higher productivity, especially during the resource-scarce season. These findings suggest that the spatial niche separation between bharal and livestock, together with snow leopards' specialized bharal diet, minimized conflicts and allowed snow leopards and bharal to coexist in landscapes dominated by livestock grazing. In recent years, reduced hunting and nomadic herder's lifestyle changes towards permanent residence may have further reinforced this spatial separation.</span><span> Our</span><span> results indicated that, </span><span>for developing conservation strategies for large carnivores, the niche of their prey in relation to human land-use is a key variable that needs to be evaluated.</span></p>
Herbivory and elevated levels of CO2 and nutrients separately, rather than synergistically, impacted biomass production and allocation in invasive and native plant species
<p><span>Large parts of the Earth are experiencing environmental change caused by alien plant invasions, rising atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), and nutrient enrichments. Elevated CO2 and nutrient concentrations can separately favour growth of invasive plants over that of natives but how herbivory may modulate the magnitude and direction of net responses by the two groups of plants to simultaneous CO2 and nutrient enrichments remains unknown. In line with the enemy release hypothesis, invasive plant species should reallocate metabolites from costly anti-herbivore defences into greater growth following escape from intense herbivory in the native range</span><span>. Therefore, invasive plants should have</span><span> greater growth than natives </span><span>under simultaneous CO2 and nutrient enrichments in the absence of herbivory. To test this prediction, we grew nine congeneric pairs of invasive and native plant species that naturally co-occurred in grasslands in China under two levels each of nutrient enrichment (low-nutrient vs. high-nutrient), herbivory (with herbivory vs. without herbivory) and under ambient (412 ± 0.6 ppm) and elevated (790.1 ± 6.2 ppm) levels of CO2 concentrations in open-top chambers in a common garden. Elevated CO2 and nutrient enrichment separately increased total plant biomass, while herbivory reduced it regardless of the plant invasive status. High-nutrient treatment caused the plants to allocate a significantly lower proportion of total biomass to roots, while herbivory induced an opposite pattern. Herbivory suppressed total biomass production more strongly in native plants than invasive plants. The plants exhibited significant interspecific and intergeneric variation in their responses to the various treatment combinations. Overall, these results suggest that elevated CO2 and nutrients and herbivory may separately, rather than synergistically, impact productivity of the invasive and co-occurring native plant species in our study system. Moreover, interspecific variation in </span>resource-use strategies was more important than invasive status in determining plant responses to the various treatment combinations.</p>
