A statistical method to optimize the chemical etching process of Zinc Oxide thin films
<p>Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is an attractive material for micro and nanoscale devices. Its desirable semiconductor, piezoelectric, and optical properties <span>make</span> it useful in applications ranging from microphones to missile warning systems to biometric sensors. This work introduces a demonstration of blending statistics and chemical etching of thin films to identify the dominant factors, and interaction between factors, and <span>develop</span> statistically enhanced models on etch rate and selectivity of ZnO thin films. Over other mineral acids, ammonium chloride (NH<sub>4</sub>Cl) solutions <span>have</span> commonly been used to <span>wet</span> etch microscale ZnO devices because of their controllable etch rate and near-linear behavior. <span>Etchant</span> concentration and temperature were found to <span>have</span> a significant effect on etch rate. Moreover, this is the first demonstration that has identified multifactor interactions between temperature and concentration and between temperature and agitation. A linear model <span>was</span> developed relating etch rate and its variance against these significant factors and multifactor interactions. An average selectivity of 73:1 <span>was </span>measured with none of the experimental factors having a significant effect on the <span>selectivity. </span>This statistical study captures the significant variance observed <span>by</span> other researchers. <span>Furthermore,</span> it enables statistically enhanced microfabrication processes for other materials.</p>
Targeted grazing and mechanical thinning enhance forest stand resilience under a narrow range of wildfire scenarios
<p>Increasing wildfire activity has spurred ecological resilience-based management that aims to reduce the vulnerability of forest stands to wildfire by reducing the probability of crown fire. Targeted grazing is increasingly being used to build forest resilience to wildfire, either on its own or in combination with treatments like mechanical thinning; however, it is unclear how effective this method is at altering the probability of crown fire in forest stands. We use crown fire simulation models to quantify to what extent targeted grazing, mechanical thinning targeting the vertical fuel stratum, and a combination of both treatments alter eastern ponderosa pine savanna stand resilience to wildfire by modelling their relative impacts on fuel stratum gap and subsequent crown fire occurrence under six different wildfire risk scenarios generated by altering wind and fuel moisture conditions. We then model changes in the probability of crown fire occurrence resulting from treatments across 75 field-sampled sites in the Pine Ridge region of Nebraska relative to predicted crown fire occurrence when sites are left untreated. We find that mechanical (vertical) thinning has the potential to alter the probability of crown fire in ponderosa pine stands to a much greater extent than targeted grazing. Combining both approaches had a slightly higher probability of reducing crown fire risk across the greatest range of wildfire risk scenarios. Across 75 sample sites, targeted grazing was only predicted to prevented crown fire occurrence at 2 sites expected to experience crown fire under observed stand conditions across all six of our wildfire risk scenarios. In contrast, targeted grazing combined with mechanical thinning was predicted to prevent crown fire at approximately half of the sites expected to experience crown fire under observed conditions under mild and moderate wildfire risk scenarios. Thus, targeted grazing should be combined with mechanical thinning to best enhance forest resilience to wildfire. No combination of targeted grazing or mechanical thinning was able to alter the probability of crown fire under wildfire risk scenarios most conducive wildfire, confirming that relying solely on vertical thinning and targeted grazing is unlikely to sufficiently enhance resilience of forest stands to future wildfire conditions.</p>
Solution Phase Growth and Analysis of Super-thin Zigzag Tin Selenide Nanoribbons
<p>Tin selenide (SnSe), a highly promising layered material, has been garnering particular interest in recent times due to its significant promise for future energy devices. Herein we report a simple solution-phase approach for growing highly crystalline layered SnSe nanoribbons. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a templating agent to selectively passivates the (100) and (001) facets of the SnSe nanoribbons resulting in the unique growth of nanoribbons along their <em>b</em>-axis with a defined zigzag edge state along the sidewalls. The SnSe nanoribbons are few layers thick (∼20 layers), with mean widths of ∼40 nm, and achievable length of >1 <em>μ</em>m. Nanoribbons could be produced in relatively high quantities (>150 mg) in a single batch experiment. The PVP coating also offers some resistance to oxidation, with the removal of the PVP seen to lead to the formation of a SnSe/SnO<em><sub>x</sub></em> core-shell structure. The use of non-toxic PVP to replace toxic amines that are typically employed for other 1D forms of SnSe is a significant advantage for sustainable and environmentally friendly applications. Heat transport properties of the SnSe nanoribbons, derived from power-dependent Raman spectroscopy, demonstrate the potential of SnSe nanoribbons as thermoelectric material.</p>

<p>Gap-junctional signaling mediates myriad cellular interactions in metazoans. Yet, how gap junctions control the positioning of cells in organs is not well understood. Innexins compose gap junctions in invertebrates and affect organ architecture. Here, we investigate the roles of gap-junctions in controlling distal somatic gonad architecture and its relationship to underlying germline stem cells in <em>Caenorhabditis elegans</em>. We show that a reduction of soma-germline gap-junctional activity causes displacement of distal sheath cells (Sh1) towards the distal end of the gonad. We confirm, by live imaging, transmission electron microscopy, and antibody staining, that bare regions – lacking somatic gonadal cell coverage of germ cells – are present between the distal tip cell (DTC) and Sh1, and we show that an innexin fusion protein used in a prior study encodes an antimorphic poisonous gap junction subunit that mispositions Sh1. We determine that, contrary to the model put forth in the prior study based on this fusion protein, Sh1 mispositioning does not markedly alter the position of the borders of the stem cell pool nor of the progenitor cell pool. Together, these results demonstrate that gap junctions can control the position of Sh1, but that Sh1 position is neither relevant for GLP-1/Notch signaling nor for the exit of germ cells from the stem cell pool.</p>
