Climatic drivers and ecological impacts of a rapid range expansion by non-native smallmouth bass

<p>Smallmouth bass (<i>Micropterus dolomieu</i>) are a globally introduced fish species that have experienced widespread range expansions in recent decades and which can have deleterious effects on native fish communities. Rapidly assessing their expansions will aid conservation and management actions geared towards controlling their spread and mitigating their impacts. Smallmouth bass have recently experienced a rapid upstream expansion in a Great Plains river (Laramie River, Wyoming, USA), which provided an opportunity to evaluate the drivers and impacts of this expansion by using a modified before-after, control-impact (BACI) design. Our objectives were to test whether climatic drivers (temperature, precipitation, flow) were related to this range expansion and subsequent effects of the expansion on native fish communities. Smallmouth bass population size in Grayrocks Reservoir increased following a climatically extreme wet year, with statistically extreme amounts of spring-time and June precipitation creating high discharge events that coincided with the upstream expansion. Unlike previous studies highlighting the invasive nature of smallmouth bass, the modified BACI analysis revealed no declines in species richness induced by the expansion. However, there was evidence that native small-bodied minnow species (family <i>Leuciscidae</i>) declined in relative abundance and that community-level and species-level trophic niches were compressed for invaded sites. Our findings provide important insight into how climatic extremes can prompt biological invasions that can alter community composition and food web structure even if local extirpations do not occur.</p>

Data from: Climate impacts on the ocean are making the Sustainable Development Goals a moving target traveling away from us

1. Climate change is impacting marine ecosystems and their goods and services in diverse ways, which can directly hinder our ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, set out under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 2. Through expert elicitation and a literature review, we find that most climate change effects have a wide variety of negative consequences across marine ecosystem services, though most studies have highlighted impacts from warming and consequences to marine species. 3. Climate change is expected to negatively influence marine ecosystem services through global stressors – such as ocean warming and acidification – but also by amplifying local and regional stressors such as freshwater runoff and pollution load. 4. Experts indicated that all Sustainable Development Goals would be overwhelmingly negatively affected by these climate impacts to marine ecosystem services, with eliminating hunger being among the most directly negatively affected Sustainable Development Goal. 5. Despite these challenges, the Sustainable Development Goals aiming to transform our consumption and production practices and develop clean energy systems are found to be least affected by marine climate impacts. These findings represent a strategic point of entry for countries to achieve sustainable development, given that these two goals are relatively robust to climate impacts and that they are important pre-requisite for other Sustainable Development Goals. 6. Our results suggest that climate change impacts on marine ecosystems are set to make the Sustainable Development Goals a moving target traveling away from us. Effective and urgent action towards sustainable development, including mitigating and adapting to climate impacts on marine systems are important to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, but the longer this action stalls the more distant these goals will become.

Impacts of climate-driven changes in habitat phenology on dynamics of niche overlaps and spatial associations in a boreal waterbird community

<p>A fundamental, yet little explored question is if climate change has affected niche relationships and spatial associations of native non-invasive species in established local communities, potentially affecting interspecific interactions and community organization. Here, long-term (1991–2020) changes in habitat niche overlaps (HNO) and spatial associations (SA) were studied in relation to climate-driven changes in habitat phenology in a community of eight migratory waterbird species breeding on 37 lakes in southeastern Finland.</p> <p>Overall timing of ice-out (IOD) and within-season variation in the timing of ice-out (standard deviation of IOD; SDIOD) in lakes determine habitat availability for waterbirds during the settling phase. Previous work has documented that IOD has advanced and SDIOD increased during the study period, with species responding differently to these changes in their habitat use.</p> <p>HNO and SA varied considerably in the 28 species pairs during the study period. The effect of IOD and SDIOD on that variation was generally small. However, the direction and magnitude of the effects of IOD and SDIOD on HNO and SA varied considerably among the species pairs. Overall differences in the direction and magnitude of the effect sizes suggested that the impacts of IOD and SDIOD on HNO and SA were stronger in species pairs in which the species were more similar in terms of settling phenology and stronger for early settling species than for late settling species. Observed changes in niche relationships probably reflect changes in interspecific interactions and affect the possibilities for heterospecific information use in habitat selection.  </p>

Health health impact assessment relevant output calculated from scenarios involving different levels of Near Term Climate Forcer mitigation

<p>This dataset contains output data from the health impact assessment using air pollutant concentrations from AerChemMIP model experiments in different Future Scenarios that involve the mitigation of Near-Term Climate Forcers, Climate and Land-use. The model experiments were conducted by UKESM1, a model contributing to CMIP6, and was run over the period 2015 to 2100 to investigate the effect of anthropogenic emissions on near-term climate forcers. The atmosphere only CMIP6 configuration of UKESM1 was used to run this set of experiments. Model simulations were conducted at a global resolution of 1.875&deg; x 1.25&deg;. These concentrations were then used to assess the impact of different mitigation pathways on the air pollution health burden. In addition, output is also provided from sensitivty scenarios that explore the impact that the total population count, age structure of the population and baseline mortality rates have on the calculated air pollution health burden.</p> <p>Outputs provided in the dataset include 10 year means of the global and regional total population count data, population weighted pollutant concentrations (both annual mean PM<sub>2.5</sub> and seasonal maximum ozone concentrations), total adult human health mortality (including the upper and lower 95% confidence intervals) in response to exposure to PM<sub>2.5</sub> and O<sub>3</sub> for different sensitivity scenarios.</p> <p>The second file (GEMM-5COD) represents the same set of calculations and data but using a different set of mortality outcomes (5 specific causes of disease) for PM2.5 exposure instead of non-accidential mortality (non-communicable disease) and all lower respiratory infections (GEMM NCD+LRI) in the original set of calculations.Further details can be found in the accompanying publication that uses the data.</p>
