Jornada Basin LTER Nutrient and Ecosystem impacts of Aeolian Transport Study (NEAT) Block 3 meteorological station: 1-second summary precipitation data: 2018 - ongoing
1-second summary precipitation data at NEAT Block-3 met station. Total precipitation per second is recorded only if there is measurable precipitation. This is recorded at an automated meteorological station installed at Jornada LTER NEAT Block-3 site. This climate station is operated by the Jornada LTER Program. This is an ONGOING dataset. IMPORTANT: Rainfall is only recorded when a bucket tip occurs on the tipping bucket rain gauge. If there is missing data due to equipment or other problems, there will be no indication of this within this dataset. The user needs to review precipitation values in the 30 minute or hourly summary datasets to determine if there are missing data in this 1 second detailed precipitation dataset.
MCR LTER: Nitrogen source drives differential impacts of nutrients on coral bleaching prevalence, duration, and mortality
Data are from an 18-month field experiment on the fore reef of Moorea, testing how different forms of nitrogen (nitrate vs. urea) impact coral bleaching and mortality during two mild thermal stress events in the Austral summers of 2016 and 2017. These data are associated with a manuscript currently in review at Ecosystems. Tentative mansucript title and author list are: Nitrogen source drives differential impacts of nutrients on coral bleaching prevalence, duration, and mortality Deron E. Burkepile, Andrew A. Shantz, Thomas C. Adam, Katrina S. Munsterman, Kelly E. Speare, Mark C. Ladd, Mallory M. Rice, Shelby McIlroy, Andrew J. Brooks, Russell J. Schmitt, and Sally J. Holbrook These data are part of the NSF project: RAPID: How does nutrient availability alter coral bleaching, mortality, and recovery on Moorea coral reefs? (funded wholly or part by NSF Awards OCE-1619697).
Fiddler crab impacts from observational study 2020-21: Aboveground & diatom biomass, plant height, percent N, burrow & mussel density, belowground biomass, and organic matter
The fiddler crab, Minuca pugnax, expanded its range into the Gulf of Maine recently and was first observed in the Plum Island Estuary in 2014. In 2020 and 2021, we investigated the impact of this burrowing crab on benthic microalgal biomass, sediment properties and the above- and belowground biomass of the cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. To accomplish this, we conducted a control-impact study in plots with and without fiddler crabs in three marshes in the PIE-LTER: Sawyer, Clubhead, and Metcalf. In its historical range (i.e., south of Cape Cod), M. pugnax, enhances Spartina aboveground biomass. In contrast, we found that, on average, when fiddler crabs were present, aboveground biomass was 40% lower in the PIE-LTER. We also found that belowground biomass was 30% lower and benthic microalgal biomass was 45% lower when fiddler crabs were present, which is in line with our expectations. Because fiddler crabs reduced the biomass of foundational primary producers in its expanded range, our results imply that M. pugnax can influence other saltmarsh functions such as carbon storage and accretion as they expand north. More broadly, our results suggest that as species expand or shift their range with climate change, not only can they have profound impacts in their new ranges, but that those impacts can be the inverse of what is seen in their historical ranges.

Fig. 3 in Upstream dam impacts on gilded catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) in the Bolivian Amazon
Fig. 3. Mean annual fishing effort and capture per unit effort (CPUE) of Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii (black bars) per month in the Ichilo River before (1998–2007) and after dam closure (2015–2017) using catfish-specific fishing methods. Mean monthly water level (MWL) in Puerto Villarroel for the two sample periods is shown (SENAMHI 2018), with vertical lines representing standard deviation. The horizontal bars show the period when commercial fishing is prohibited.
