Data from: Sustained positive consequences of genetic rescue of fitness and behavioural traits in inbred populations of Drosophila melanogaster
<p><span>One solution to alleviate the detrimental genetic effects associated with reductions in population size and fragmentation is to introduce immigrants from other populations. While the effects of this genetic rescue on fitness traits are fairly well known, it is less clear to what extent inbreeding depression and subsequent genetic rescue affects behavioural traits. In this study, replicated crosses between inbred lines of <em>Drosophila melanogaster</em> were performed in order to investigate the effects of inbreeding and genetic rescue on egg-to-adult viability and negative geotaxis behaviour - a locomotor response used to measure e.g. the effects of physiological ageing. Transgenerational effects of outcrossing were investigated by examining the fitness consequences in both the F<sub>1</sub> and F<sub>4</sub> generation. The majority of inbred lines showed evidence for inbreeding depression for both egg-to-adult viability and behavioural performance (95% and 66% of lines, respectively), with inbreeding depression being more pronounced for viability compared to locomotor response. Subsequent outcrossing with immigrants led to an alleviation of the negative effects for both viability and geotaxis response resulting in inbred lines being similar to the outbred controls, with beneficial effects persisting from F<sub>1</sub> to F<sub>4</sub>. Overall, the results clearly show that genetic rescue can provide transgenerational rescue of small, inbred populations by rapidly improving population fitness components. Thus, we show that even the negative effects of inbreeding on behaviour, similar to that of neurodegeneration associated with physiological ageing, can be reversed by genetic rescue.</span></p>
Sustainable power generation for at least one month from ambient humidity using unique nanofluidic diode
<p>The continuous energy-harvesting in moisture environment is attractive for the development of clean energy source. Controlling the transport of ionized mobile charge in intelligent nanoporous membrane systems is a promising strategy to develop the moisture-enabled electric generator. However, existing designs still suffer from low output power density. Moreover, these devices can only produce short-term (mostly a few seconds or a few hours, rarely for a few days) voltage and current output in the ambient environment. Here, we show an ionic diode–type hybrid membrane capable of continuously generating energy in the ambient environment. The built-in electric field of the nanofluidic diode-type PN junction helps the selective ions separation and the steady-state one-way ion charge transfer. This directional ion migration is further converted to electron transportation at the surface of electrodes via oxidation-reduction reaction and charge adsorption, thus resulting in a continuous voltage and current with high energy conversion efficiency.</p>

<p>Schriftliche Reflexionen von 57 Studierenden als Prüfungsleistung im Rahmen des forschenden Lernens mit Video zu Nachhaltigkeitsthemen. Die Reflexionen wurden durch vorgegebene Fragen angeleitet. Die hier vorliegenden Texte sind, von den Studierenden selbst niedergeschriebene, Transkripte von Sprechtexten eines Self-Video-Casts. Es handelt sich dabei um eine benotete Prüfungsleistung einer universitätsübergreifenden Wahlpflicht-Lehrveranstaltung mit 1-3 Credit-Points.</p> <p>A dataset containing written reflections of 57 university students from several German universities and fields of study on their participation in collaborative research-based learning focused on sustainability topics and using videos as a research tool. These reflections were guided by given questions. The texts presented here are transcripts of spoken texts of self-video-casts, written down by the students themselves. The texts were graded as part of an inter-university elective course worth 1-3 credit points.</p>

Factors influencing the sustainability of homestead vegetable production intervention in Rufiji, Tanzania: A cross-sectional mixed methods study
<p><strong>Background </strong></p> <p>There is growing evidence that home vegetable gardening interventions improve food security and nutrition outcomes at the family level. This study assessed factors influencing the sustainability of homestead vegetable production intervention, one year after the cessation of external support.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong></p> <p>This was a cross-sectional study using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A total of 247 randomly selected households that participated in the homestead vegetable intervention were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The study held four focus group discussions with households that participated in the intervention, and four In-Depth interviews with two extension workers, one community health worker, and one agriculture district officer. Multiple logistic regression for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data was conducted.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>About 20.24% (50/247) of households sustained homestead vegetable production for one year after the intervention phased out. Lack of seeds (adjusted OR=1.26: CI=0.39-0.89) and either manure or fertilizers (adjusted OR=1.69: CI =1.08-2.63) were significant factors influencing the sustainability of homesteads vegetable production. In the Focus Group discussions (FGDs) and In-Depth Interview (IDIs), all participating women and extension workers reported high cost of water, destruction from free-grazing animals, agriculture pests and diseases, poor soil fertility, shortage of seeds, and lack of capital affected homestead vegetable production sustainability.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>Existing individual, community, and system challenges influence the sustainability of external-funded agriculture and nutrition interventions. The study findings underscore the importance of community authorities, scientists, and policymakers in having a well-thought sustainability plan in all promising external-funded interventions.</p>

Critical barriers to sustainable capacity strengthening in global health: A systems perspective on development assistance
<p>These qualitative datasets are associated with work done under the Inter-agency Working Group for Capacity Strengthening initiative. The data was captured via Miro - a digital whiteboarding tool - using an innovative co-creation process called Systems Acupuncture and details the nine systemic barriers impeding a better, more sustainable country-driven model for capacity strengthening. The data was captured over a series of stakeholder workshops and discussion sessions, and synthesized into nine "system syndrome" maps. The maps illustrate the multi-dimensional causal relationships between individual system drivers and display feedback loops (i.e., sets of drivers that reinforce each other) within and between the system syndrome maps. Data from "Towards a sustainable use of shower water: Habits and explanatory factors in southern Spain"
<p>One of the targets of SDG 6 is the efficient use of water resources in all sectors in order to tackle water shortages. In the home, showering is one of the main water consuming activities. How can people make a more sustainable use of shower water? To answer this question, this research analyses showering habits and explanatory factors of shower use. The study is carried out with data from 945 students of the University of Granada, Spain. Significant differences are observed in shower use during the summer and winter months: the average duration is 8.8 and 11.6 minutes, respectively, and shower frequency is greater in summer. Determinants of different shower water use include gender, ideology, pro-environmental actions, inherent values and connectedness to nature, among others. Those variables relate differently to duration and frequency of showers, according to the season, thus highlighting the importance of seasonality. The results show that there is room to achieve a more sustainable use of the shower, in terms of frequency and duration, through awareness measures that are tailored to groups that make a less sustainable use of showers. The main recommendation is that awareness campaigns should be designed on the basis of the user profile as well as the season.</p>
Data from: How does sustainable water consumption in the shower relate to different dimensions of perceived well-being? Empirical evidence from university students
<p>Water scarcity is already a worrying issue and it is predicted to get worse in the future. This creates an imperative to use water efficiently and sustainably. In the domestic sphere, one of the main uses of water is showering, not only for hygiene reasons but also as a wellness activity. In order to gain insight into the implications of sustainable shower use, in this paper we analyse the relationship between subjective well-being and water consumption in the shower. We aim to answer the following questions: 1) How does shower water consumption relate to subjective well-being, 2) Does this relationship differ depending on showering habits (time spent in the shower, and number of showers per week), and 3) Does this relationship differ depending on the season (winter and summer). The dataset contains information on 937 students from different disciplines at the University of Granada, Spain. The different interpretations of subjective well-being considered are life satisfaction, affect, and vitality. Results suggest that there is a negative relationship between water consumption and subjective well-being, in line with the literature that identifies a well-being dividend from green behaviour (being pro-environmental helps the environment and increases happiness). All subjective well-being dimensions are negatively related to time spent in the shower, regardless of the season. In contrast, the frequency of showering is not significantly related to well-being. Therefore, it appears that higher water consumption does not translate into higher perceived well-being, indicating that there is no conflict between efficient shower water use and individual well-being.</p>
Model parameter time series of the Business Roadmap for sustainable development of the Mar Menor and surrounding Campo de Cartagena
<p>The Business Roadmap and Policy Recommendations (BRM) represents 14 solutions for sustainable development of the Mar Menor and surrounding Campo de Cartagena that were developed during an extensive co-design process (workshops, expert interviews, online questionnaires) with representatives from all relevant sectors involved. A full description of the BRM, its co-development, and the modelled impacts on Key Performance Indicators of sustainability can be found in<a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7142764"> Martínez-López et al (2022)</a>.</p> <p>The model parameter time-series in this dataset indicate if and when a solution is turned on or off between 1964 and 2070 based on preferences indicated by stakeholders. These time-series represent input parameters for the System Dynamics model of the socio-ecosystem of the Mar Menor-campo de Cartagena developed in the COASTAL project and that is used to quantify impacts on key performance indicators of sustainability. This System Dynamics based model, developed by Martínez-López et al (2022) can be consulted <a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7142764">here</a>.</p> <p>The Business Road Map and Policy Recommendations (BRM) consists of the following 4 milestones and related 14 solutions:</p> <p>(I) <strong>Rural ecotourism</strong>:</p> <p>1. Different types of semi-natural habitat are required to sustain diverse wild bee communities across agricultural landscapes
<p><span>1. Semi-natural habitats provide important resources for wild bees in agricultural landscapes. Landscapes under management are dynamic and floral resources fluctuate in space and time. Thus, promoting different semi-natural habitat types within landscapes could be key to support diverse bee meta-communities throughout the season.</span></p> <p><span>2. Here, we integrate analyses of </span><span>a</span><span>-diversity (species richness) and </span><span>b</span><span>-diversity and species-habitat networks to examine the relative contribution of all major semi-natural habitats to wild bee meta-communities in agricultural landscapes. We sampled extensively and conventionally managed meadows, flower strips, hedgerows and forest edges in spring, early and late summer in 25 landscapes in Switzerland. </span></p> <p><span>3. Habitat types varied in their importance for wild bees throughout the season: While extensively managed meadows supported more rare species, habitat specialists and bee species overall than the other habitat types, flower strips were most important later in the season. Each of the five investigated habitat types harboured relatively unique sets of species with different habitats generally acting as distinct modules in the overall bee-habitat network. </span></p> <p><span>4. Not only flower richness in a habitat per se, but also flower-habitat network properties (habitat strength and functional complementarity) were good predictors of wild bee richness. In addition to local floral richness, landscape composition and configuration interactively influenced </span><span>b</span><span>-diversity patterns across habitats.</span></p> <p><span>5. Synthesis and applications</span><span>. Our study highlights the value of pollinator-habitat network analysis to inform pollinator conservation management at the landscape scale, especially when combined with information on floral resources and flower-habitat networks. Maintaining different types of semi-natural habitats offers diverse and complementary resources throughout the season, which are crucial to sustain diverse wild bee meta-communities in agricultural landscapes. Particularly meadow extensification schemes can play a key role in safeguarding rare and specialist species in these landscapes. While locally a high flower richness promoted bee abundance and richness in general, our results indicate that increasing connectivity between habitat patches in landscapes dominated by arable crops appears to improve species exchange between local bee communities of different habitats, thereby possibly increasing their resilience to disturbances.</span></p>

<p>To meet the growing food demand while addressing the multiple challenges of exacerbating phosphorus (P) pollution and depleting P rock reserves, P use efficiency (PUE, the ratio of productive P output to P input in a defined system) in crop production needs to be improved. Although many efforts have been devoted to improving nutrient management practices on farms, few studies have examined the historical trajectories of PUE and their socioeconomic and agronomic drivers on a national scale. Here we present a database of the P budget (the input and output of the crop production system) and PUE by country and by crop type for 1961–2019 and examine the substantial contribution of several drivers for PUE, such as economic development stages and crop portfolios. To address the P management challenges, we found that global PUE in crop production must increase to 68–81%, and recent trends indicate some meaningful progress towards this goal. However, P management challenges and opportunities in croplands vary widely among countries.</p>
