Measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Switzerland

<p>Since February 25, 2020 Switzerland has been affected by COVID-19. Modelling predictions show that this pandemic will not stop on its own and that stringent migitation strategies are needed. Switzerland has implemented a series of measures both at cantonal and federal level. On March 16, 2020 the Federal Council of Switzerland declared &ldquo;extraordinary situation&rdquo; and introduced a series of stringent measures. This includes the closure of schools, restaurants, bars, businesses with close contact (e.g. hair dressers), entertainment or leisure facilities. Incoming cross-border mobility from specific countries is also restricted to Swiss citizens, residency holders or work commuters. As of March 20, 2020 mass gatherings of more than five people are also banned. Already in early March various cantons had started to ban events of various sizes and have restricted or banned access to short- and long-term care facilites and day care centers.&nbsp;</p> <p>The aim of this project is to collect and categorize these control measures implemented and provide a continously updated data set, which can be used for modelling or visualization purposes. Please use the newest version available.&nbsp;</p> <p>We collect the date/duration and level of the most important measures taken in response to COVID-19 from official cantonal and federal press releases. A description of the measures, the levels as well as the newest version of data dataset can be found <a href="https://github.com/baffelli/covid-2019-measures">here</a>.&nbsp;</p>

Survey on acceptability of building-integrated PV (BIPV) in Switzerland

<p>An online survey in spring 2017 with 552 persons from the German-speaking part of Switzerland, which were representative in terms of age and sex, was conducted. The questionnaire included amongst others items on general acceptance, individual acceptance factors found in the literature and risk perceptions associated with BIPV in general, as well as a set of questions regarding attitudes towards specific building design prototypes with BIPV (designed by EPFL-LAST).</p>

Discordant Clostridioides difficile diagnostic assay and treatment practice: a cross-sectional study in a tertiary care hospital, Geneva, Switzerland

<p><b><span>Objectives:</span></b><span> </span><span><span>To determine the proportion of patients who received a treatment for </span><i><span>Clostridioides difficile</span></i><span> infection (CDI) among those presenting a discordant </span><i><span>Clostridioides difficile</span></i><span> diagnostic assay and to identify patient characteristics associated with the decision to treat CDI.</span></span></p> <p><b><span><span>Design: </span></span></b><span><span>Cross-sectional study.</span></span></p> <p><b><span><span>Setting: </span></span></b><span><span>Monocentric study in a tertiary care hospital, Geneva, Switzerland</span></span></p> <p><b><span>Participants: </span></b><span>Among 4562 adult patients tested for </span><i><span>C. difficile</span></i><span> between March 2017 and March 2019</span><span><span>, 208 patients with discordant tests' results</span></span><span> (positive nucleic acid amplification test [NAAT+]/negative enzyme immunoassay [EIA-]) were included.</span></p> <p><b><span>Main outcome measures:</span></b><span> </span><span><span>Treatment for CDI</span></span><span>.</span></p> <p><b><span>Results: </span></b><span><span>CDI treatment was administered in 147 (71%) cases</span></span><span>. In multivariate analysis, </span><span><span>an abdominal computed tomography scan</span></span><span> with signs of colitis (</span><span><span>OR 14.7; 95% CI 1.96-110.8) was the only factor associated with CDI treatment</span></span><span>.</span></p> <p><b><span>Conclusions:</span></b><span> The proportion of NAAT+/EIA- patients who received treatment questions the contribution of the EIA for the detection of toxin A/B after NAAT to limit </span><span><span>overtreatment</span></span><span>. Additional studies are needed to investigate if other factors are associated with the decision to treat.</span></p>

Chironomid-based temperature reconstruction from Burgäschisee, Switzerland

<p>The data herein presents a new chironomid record and associated chironomid-based temperature reconstruction covering the time interval 18,000-14,000 cal. BP from the lacustrine sediments of a kettle hole lake Burgäschisee, Switzerland. Chironomid assemblages show ecological turnover beginning 1,300 years before the onset of the Oldest Dryas / <span>Bølling</span> transition at ca. 14,700 cal. BP and associated increases in chironomid-based temperature reconstructions. These data also include non-chironomid invertebrate remains, including Ceratopogonidae, Daphnia and Ephemeroptera as well as Characean oospores.</p>

Integrating stable isotopes, parasite and ring-reencounter data to quantify migratory connectivity - a case study with Barn Swallows breeding in Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and Finland

<p>Ecosystems around the world are connected by seasonal migration. The migrant animals themselves are influenced by migratory connectivity through effects on the individual and the population level. Measuring migratory connectivity is notoriously difficult due to the simple requirement of data conveying information about the non-breeding distribution of many individuals from several breeding populations. Explicit integration of data derived from different methods increases the precision and the reliability of parameter estimates.</p> <p>We combine ring-reencounter, stable isotope and blood parasite data of Barn Swallows <i>Hirundo rustica</i> in a single integrated model to estimate migratory connectivity for three large scale breeding populations across a latitudinal gradient from Central Europe and Scandinavia. To this end, we integrated a non-Markovian multi-state mark-recovery model for the ring-reencounter data with normal and binomial mixture models for the stable isotope and parasite data.</p> <p>The integration of different data sources within a mark-recapture modelling framework enables the most precise quantification of migratory connectivity on the given broad spatial scale. The results show that northern breeding populations and Southern Africa as well as southern breeding populations and Western-Central Africa are more strongly connected through Barn Swallow migration than central European breeding populations with any of the African wintering areas. The non-breeding distribution of Barn Swallows from central European breeding populations seems to be a mixture of those populations breeding further North and South, indicating a migratory divide.</p>
